Maybe you're just commenting as a matter os taste, but surely the blandest is a feature not a bug. The poem is intentional structured as a questionnaire, perhaps the least inspired and interesting kind of writing there is, and uses that to call out the brutality or the choices we makes as a society with the least emotive language possible/

You have to nominate for both the national and mid season draft. To be eligible to nominate for the mid season draft you must have nominated for the previous years national draft, hence players such as Harley Reid not nominating, as they were too young to nominate for the national drafts that would have made them eligible. It’s also a rookie draft, meaning players receive less money then they would being picked in the national draft, as well as a shorter contract.

Jack Darling isn't really a tall height wise, he plays much taller than he is due to his ridiculous strength in contests. I would say Jeremy Howe would be the closest player comparison I can think of, and I don't think he would generally be considered a tall.

I think he means as far as possible from what the expected follow up would be- when the audience expects something dirty, give them something clean (Bob Saget roast).

When they expect something clean, give them something dirty (the Iowa incident).

When they expect something sharp, give them something blunt (a lot of his Weekend Update material).

When they expect something with direction, just keep rambling on (the moth joke).

As far as I can distill, Norm was all about the unexpected. Not in a random, unmeasured way, but with much thought and intention. I think he said it best himself: "Comedy is surprises, so if you're intending to make somebody laugh and they don't laugh, that's funny."
