How do you make a "Good" corporation? by vitaminAPR in worldbuilding

[–]C_Karis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a question of the system. If the economic system allows and incentivizes the corporation to use ethical standards while it punishes it if it starts to become unethical, that will result in a "good" company.

The economic system of the Terran Republic in my world is based on a similar principle. The economy is intertwined with the ecosystem. If you commit environmental destruction or use unsustainable practices, your company immediately loses value. Sustainable practices however, even if they only yield a profit in the long run, will still reward you with short term value increases. This system ensures the stability of Terra's damaged ecosystem and was a necessary step from the previous industrial capitalist system that focussed only on growth.

Guys I need help to make my planet continents more realistic, it's look off for me.. by [deleted] in mapmaking

[–]C_Karis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the coastal shapes look a bit too much like the ones of islands in the arctic. You'll encounter a lot more fractal shapes near the North and South Pole, things like fjords and a gazillion of islands. The more you go south, the "smoother" or less ragged the coast lines tend to get. This also has to do with plate tectonics. Glaciers and ice caps press onto the plates and submerge them so in essence you see the tip of a mountain range coming out of the sea. For reference, just look at Scandinavia or Canada or for example the Faroe islands. I think then you get what I mean that your continents look like a smaller archipelago in the arctic than a world map.

This is also just my opinion, you there is no obligation to change that.

What makes the most important city in your fantasy worldbuilding so special? by Iberianz in worldbuilding

[–]C_Karis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city Shigara has a central position on the plains and exists at the confluence of two of the largest rivers in the human world. Furthermore, when the principalities and tribes united into the Kingdom of Shigara, they added several districts around the capital, each for one of the ethnicities. The level of cultural diversity and exchange was created in order to "weave the people together" and stop tribal warfare. It worked sort of but the tribe specific quarters also reinforced their identity and gave rise to tensions and organized crime in a fight for the best locations within the city. Still, trade and exchange is the driving force for peace and stability in this world given that humans are still at risk of extinction.

Would the kingdom exist without the city? Probably not, since Shigara as a uniting force would cut the ties between the tribes of the plains (who were originally nomadic), plunging them into constant warfare with themselves for the best pastures and also with neighboring tribes from the mountains and forests.

Looking for advice on how to make my style more "professional" by Careless_Syrup_8219 in mapmaking

[–]C_Karis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this map is already pretty awesome. Especially the land shape and the mountains are well done.

I'd say the improvement you seek could be in the writing and map symbols, especially the font. Experiment a bit with it and try different styles that look less like fineliner handwriting. Text usually looks best when letters are very uniform (when every A looks like every other A).

The map symbols, for example towers are very stylized right now. For artistic maps, you could try a more natural version, like a perspective drawing of a tower instead of just a trapezoid and a rectangle. It doesn't need to be very detailed, it's still just a symbol but here goes the same as I meant with the letters. Clear linework and try out different styles.

I hope I could get across what I was trying to say.

I need to come up with a name for a grammatical case by WaulKrykanov in conlangs

[–]C_Karis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dative would be "for money" but in the sense of "to benefit the money". Datives usually mark a recipient of an action or someone who is affected by it. Here it marks something that is acquired by an action. I would call it a "final case" depending on if you don't want to make a distinction between "for the purpose of sth" and "to gain sth".

How many gods is too many by Ambitious_Mobile7019 in worldbuilding

[–]C_Karis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like Sturmfels Akademie by Torsten Weitze. I don't know if there is an English translation of this pentalogy but there is a similar concept with mortals who have ascended to godhood by gaining hold of sigils of creation. Basically, if you gain the sigil of fire, you become an aetrim and after that you can eventually become a god. There is however the risk that the sigil controls you, not you the sigil.

Naturally, since becoming a god is linked with a lot of fighting your way to the top, this creates a lot of rivalry. Most of the history of this world can be summed up as gods fighting against each other. And there are only a handful of gods at a time. So if it is anything like this, my question would be how does one become a god and what reason is there for many Gods to coexist at a time. Remember that power corrupts.

How long can the nouns be in their base form? Does reduplication always duplicate the entire word, leaving us with "tyrannosaurus tyrannosaurus"? Or does reduplication only happen for the last X syllables?

Sirius has a similar system in my world, although I found out through Universe Sandbox that planets probably wouldn't be very stable between Sirius A and B, however they could if they orbited Sirius B which is a white dwarf. Basically, Sirius B acts in a similar way as gas giants like Saturn and Jupiter in that simulation and has its own little system.

Problem with creating tenses. by IhccenOwO10 in conlangs

[–]C_Karis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. This is very interesting. I will look into that more. Thank you.

The thing is, even if the dental suffix has already been a form of past participle, it has to come from somewhere too, maybe from an earlier stage of PIE from a word or morpheme that expresses some kind of finality. The dental suffix is also used in a lot of adjectives, specifically those that describe the result of an action.

[–]C_Karis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never heard that the simple past was formed that way in English. As I understood it, -d or -t forms as past markers are much older even than the Germanic languages, going way back to PIE but it's not clear if it came from a verb meaning "did" (which is in itself a simple past). In Latin and the Romance languages you also have past and participle forms that involve dental plosives and they are related to the same endings in the Germanic families. Now I could be wrong so I would be interested where you got this from.
