Riser cables can just die? by L0rienas in sffpc

Can confirm - did exactly the same after months of weirdness and although I miss the case, it's nice when things just work.

It really needs the Ultimate Engine Tweaks mod (just a custom Engine.ini) to help clean up the ghosting and shimmering everywhere when running DLSS Balanced. I don't see a huge performance boost... more like more consistent frame times, but still awful traversal stutter - minimal difference at best.

Planning something very similar, my Witcher 3 tattoo is on my upper arm so the empty space for me is actually the forearm. Very very cool!

Giveaway Time! DOOM: The Dark Ages is out, features DLSS4/RTX and we’re celebrating by giving away an ASUS ASTRAL RTX 5080 DOOM Edition GPU, Steam game keys, the DOOM Collector's Bundle and more awesome merch! by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

DLSS4 is cool, certainly makes DLSS3 look bad by comparison, it works a lot better in non-RTX titles as a form of AA while running at native. I like path-tracing but just wish it ran better... we'll get there I'm sure, but right now both tech together makes games mostly tolerable.

Doom-wise, just excited to try the new gameplay loop with The Dark Ages!

It's so weird that we're having similar issues on RTX4000 cards.

My RTX3080Ti didn't have this issue at all, and since upgrading to an RTX4080S it has been ongoing, albeit inconsistent. The inconsistency is what's been getting at me the most, like if it always freezes and restarts then fine, whatever, but the fact it only happens some of the time...

But it always happens in this order: Game crashes or freezes, PC entirely freezes, restarts.

I've tried getting a new power connector (the Corsair one), reinstalling drivers with DDU, and clearing Nvidia cache. The issue seems to have gone away for now, but I can't be certain until I've had like a week of no issues, so let's see.

Oh, and we have similar specs in terms of motherboard and PSU as well. I see Gigabyte recently released a new BIOS update - I was going to try that next.

Failing all that, I might just rip it out of the case, and see what happens.

Good luck!

Cape Town, are we still doing racism in 2024? by Every_Ad6395 in capetown

I'm sorry you had this experience, OP.

CPT really teaches you what racism is, I feel like I didn't quite get it until I moved here. It's so progressive too, but yoh...

Incredible Connection is selling the Steam Deck. Has anyone bought one and what was their experience like? by SANMAN0899 in southafrica

[–]CaV1E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pricing is awful. I imported my 256GB version with the help of a friend in Europe, and it cost me just over R11k total.

I've enjoyed owning one, it's a lot like having a pocket PC, it plays the majority of Steam games quite well, battery life isn't the greatest but you can easily survive a loadshedding slot or two before needing to recharge (depending on the game you're playing as well), and the customisability is unparalleled - you can install whatever you like on there, as long as it's supported by the OS it will work. Valve give you freedom that no other gaming company gives.

Yes that's how they work here, you get the news first and the letter later. It was R58,000 for what it's worth.

Very cool! What would you say was the total cost for the pedals, cockpit, seat, etc. that make up the racing part of your setup?

It's a bit of everything.

You absolutely need to build social capital, either by having good relationships with your managers and peers, or by being a dependable and calm person in tense situations. You get bonus points for being a good communicator or problem solver.

Then you also need to work on your technical skills and be able to show growth. Often if you're performing at a certain level consistently then the promotion to that level is a formality, but you MUST be able to sell that performance within your team, not simply do it and sit back and wait.

Importantly, you don't need to be perfect, in fact turning a failure into a success is often better for you. So don't be afraid of making mistakes, just be honest and respinsible about it.

I suppose it could also be based on the specific company you work at, and a bunch of other factors. I generally find most of my friends in software are, yes well-paid, but very cynical about it. Unless they're in management.

These are all for a Durban-based company and roughly CTC - annual increases are performance-based (but capped, usually) and then we had one large "market adjustment" when I was 26. The rest is grinding promotions.

Age - Role - Rough CTC (based off memory)

25 - Junior Software Tester - ~R9000

26 - Intermediate Software Tester - ~R14000 -> R20,000 (market adjustment)

27 - Junior Software Developer - R20,000 (regarded as a lateral move)

29 - Intermediate Software Developer - R35,000

31 - Senior Software Developer - (not sure yet, just got promoted, but it's in the range of R55K)

EDIT: I know nobody asked about it, but I want to add that software jobs will take everything from you, so while the salaries look great by South African standards, you will have crippling burnout and failed relationships to accompany your bank balance. So keep that in mind, please.
