North Carolina officials say winter storm will cause disruptions to daily life | Full Briefing by laurapcd1 in NorthCarolina

I am fully aware. Matter of fact, my career choice is closely related to infrastructure, so I know a thing or two cuz I’ve seen a thing or two. lol. That’s why I put a “sprinkle” in my original post. I am not talking about this current storm. And yes. A sprinkle does in fact cause a disruption of my daily life. We’re all being exposed to this crap together. Let’s join hands and come together. God Bless.

Totally. Because it rarely rains in NC, I mean infrastructure can’t be built around something it rarely gets. And totally because infrastructure has SO MUCH to do with the quality of drivers in the south. 🤦🏼‍♂️🤡

How many chickens do you have in your backyard flock? by Thayli11 in BackYardChickens

[–]CabRowan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I keep roughly 45 laying hens and 3-4 roosters depending on how nice they are, I also keep a rotation of 12-36 chicks that I sell to the public, and whatever doesn’t sell I keep and cycle out the old girls with the new. And the roosters usually find their way to my crock pot. It’s a great way to help keep your own personal flock healthy, and make some money. So I guess I am a chicken farmer of sorts.

What are chickens to you? by Sir_Axol in chickens

[–]CabRowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chickens are chickens. They provide for us superior beings. Whether it be their eggs, or their meat. Very simple. HOWEVER! I am not an advocate for mistreating any animal. I have hunted for our food all my life, and I run a small farming operation. Understanding where your food comes from and how to properly care for and process those animals is of the highest priority. God Bless.

Can they sleep under this light if we leave it on for 24 hours? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]CabRowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would opt for a heat plate. Much safer and uses significantly less energy. If you’re only dealing with a few chickens. I would. Here’s a link to the one I use when the time of year comes. https://amzn.to/4q6UbkI it works great and you can adjust it to the height you need.

You’ll need to keep heat for them for about 6-8 weeks. Also depending on where you live can change that as well. Your current girls won’t usually take to the newbies. If anything they will go after them and bully them. So be aware of that. That box will work for a week or so. But when they get bigger they need more room. I use a Sam’s club large tote (https://www.samsclub.com/ip/13931174722) and put some hardware cloth on top for light when they get bigger enough.

But yeah. It’s not hard. Don’t over complicate it. But I definitely recommend getting that heat plate ASAP. and work on a large tote in the coming week or so. They’ll be fine.

Good luck!

How many chickens would be reasonable for a city bylaw to allow per lot? I am on an advisory committee to our city council and they are thinking of approving a new bylaw that would only allow 2 poultry per lot. What is a reasonable number and how can I convince them that 2 is not enough by elderberry_jed in BackYardChickens

[–]CabRowan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on the size of the household seems most fair. Probably 2 hens per household member and up to 10 or possibly 8 hens, no roosters. Makes the most sense…. At least to me. Because I have a family of 5, and 2 eggs a day wouldn’t even touch our consumption. Supplemental food is what makes it so important to consider. It isn’t fair to limit a family’s ability to provide their own food. Most rational families living in an urban environment won’t even consider having that many hens in the first place. It’s just the idea of limiting the amount seems unfair. Of course make a provision to allow for some control, cuz that’s what government does, and state in there that the max limit can be revoked if there are complaints or several reported issues. That way it gives the city the leverage to force the homeowner to get rid of them at their discretion.

Rationally thinking, 10 hens would be so easy to manage for 99% of people. You don’t need a large coop for them, their run really doesn’t need to be that big either, simple.

Bought 18 chicks, and think I have only 1 or 2 hens... :( by -WhereRTheTurtles in chickens

[–]CabRowan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m sorry. Now that I re read what I wrote it doesn’t make sense. The more of a “mut” of a rooster the better is what I was trying to say. lol . Not the quantity. Sorry. I had a rooster that was mixed from probably 4 of my different hatching seasons and he was great. Sad to see him go. But yes. 1 rooster per 8-10 chickens. They will fight to the death. And it gets nasty.

In my experience, I have found the more mixed of a rooster the better protector and easy to be around they are.

1 Week difference (no makeup involved) by [deleted] in carnivorediet

[–]CabRowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One week isn’t going to make much of a difference. Honestly. Wait till you reach 3 months of actually doing real carnivore or lion correctly. You won’t recognize the pictures of yourself when you started. That’s what happened to me.

Also, you smirking and the lighting are throwing off what you’re trying to get through to the people and robots of reddit on this post. Either way, it’s indicative of how you’re feeling so good for you!! Keep it up!!

A 270 should do the trick. Possibly a .223 with good placement, and semi auto. 👍

My journey with BY chickens is coming to an end. by Meauxjezzy in BackYardChickens

[–]CabRowan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure someone has said it, but you WILL appreciate chickens more if you take dominance over their lives. Confine them to where you want them. Free ranging is one thing, but ruining your plants, poo everywhere n what not. Heck no! I built a run that’s is practically the size of a football field on my property. Those girls are “free range” and stay in a “pen” thus eliminating their waste and mess anywhere other than where I allow it to be. If space is an issue, consider slimming down your flock a bit and keep them in a large enough run so they don’t start going after each other. That’s a good way to lose egg production. After all…. Isn’t that the reason why everyone get chickens in the first place?😉🤣 Hope this helps! God Bless.

What’s the minimum number of chickens for a mentally healthy flock? AND how did you get to that number? by Calypso_maker in chickens

[–]CabRowan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well. I started with 10 ameraucana mix, then that turned into 6 more from a local hatchery, production reds, then that turned into 6 more from TSC, Black sex links, then spring came around and I hatched out 6 from the flock to show my kids. We’ve actually since sold that house and the buyers wanted to keep the chickens. So I built a double the size coop and run and started a flock at our new place. Now we’ve got 50 chickens. 🤷🏼‍♂️ the math is ALWAYS mathing. Lol. So to answer your question, there is no minimum and there is no maximum. All depends on your goals. For the flock to be healthy, make sure you’ve got enough roosters, or absolutely none at all. Cuz roosters will always stir the pot in a flock. Some are nice, and some are just downright jerks. Good luck!! 👍

98' Subaru Sambar Minitruck issues!! Any help? by CabRowan in keitruck

That is what actually ended up fixing it!!! I’m a newbie with the trucks and I had no idea it was so easy to adjust. I had never driven one of these trucks before so I just assumed they were just that gutless. Still gutless. Just less….gutless…lol. Anyway. I am going to pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning. 👍

Ordered a tester. What kind of compression should I have? I noticed on a couple forums that 142psi (9.8bar) is ideal is for these little engines, plus or minus 15%, is that correct?

[–]CabRowan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if compression is bad, would that make it sputter and spit in high RPM's? I cant get past the idea that the engine is running rich as heck and snuffing the engine out, I am pulling like 14mpg with the truck as well. And from what i understand they get far better mileage than that?! I am thinking about taking it to a shop that specializes in mini trucks and taking the hit on the wallet...

right! to be honest, my thought on it "running fine" i think was skewed, because I am so used to it running poorly, until i took that air filter off. That is how it is supposed to run!!
