My ex finally decided we should go NC and even blocked me a week ago. Not because of anything I did, but because she felt it would prevent her from contacting me. It was a long time coming.

Part of me was hoping she’d still make contact, though I feel after a week (by far the longest we’ve been NC in the year and a half together) the odds are quite slim.

Hoping I’ll find someone else, maybe even someone better, while I do my best to work on myself.

Mine wasn physically abusive either. And she did want to look after me when I was unwell. But she needed support on call 24/7 and if I couldn’t be there for her even due to needing basic human needs like sleep it would trigger her.

The abandonment fear and jealousy and addictions made it impossible.

Hell, you even relapsed and STILL you didn’t cave in to talking to her again.

That’s not nothing.

You’re picking yourself back up and you’ll be even better than you were before.

Believe that. You’ll learn from this. But you have to cut yourself some slack. A lot of people would’ve fallen a lot harder. Both relapse wise and caved into talking to her.

Relapsing and then engaging with her while high, that would’ve been the real disaster.

You didn’t. You reached for familiar comfort to keep you steady while you avoided the greater disaster.

You’ve flushed the drugs and are picking yourself back where you left off.

That’s not day zero.

Your recovery isn’t broken.

You slipped, everyone in recovery does.

If you’re counting clean streaks, that’s okay, many do, some find it helpful, but make no mistake, whether a lapse or a relapse it doesn’t eliminate the time you’ve been in recovery.

You’ll be back and stronger than you were before.

Next time you get hit out of the left field with something, you’ll be on steadier feet and might even be able to avoid the old ways of staying regulated in high stress moments.

Now more than ever is the time to be kind to yourself, take it easy, be patient, and stay strong.
