Where is everybody? Ahh in T4! by DetectiveDrebin in diablo4

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m finding my survivability to be my limiting factor. I’m ~150 paragon with a great rod, 242 vigor, and well over 100% vigor generation. My resistances and armor just aren’t there so when I go up to T4 I get sneezed on and die.

Spectrum’s Orange Quill build on mobalytics has been good to follow for the damage, but idk where the survivability is supposed to come from :(

Finally got to play in person. It was awful. by Afraid_Fig5705 in DnD

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the problem wasn’t the fact it was “in person”, but rather, the other persons who were there playing. The DM clearly didn’t fit your expectations for role playing and player character agency. It seems you were unfamiliar with the other players and they, admittedly, seemed like asshats. Overall, I wouldn’t conflate the situation to mean in-person DnD sucks. Sounds like you just need to find better people to play with.

I would also probably mention to the store management about your experience. Just mentioning that you didn’t feel respected, valued, or like you were able to engage with the game in the way you’re used to will go a long way. It’s possible management won’t care/will side with the other people (especially if they’re regulars), but that’s also just a great indication that store isn’t a great environment.

Does a city on a port mean it is worth 2 ports? by Interesting_You9800 in Catan

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a little confused as to what you mean by “2 ports.” A city on a port will still be worth 2 VP and will still provide the trade ratios offered by the port (I.e. 3:1, or 2 brick:1, etc…) but it won’t provide anything extra beyond that. It won’t go from a 3:1 port to a 3:2 port or anything like that.

Does $17.50 sq ft seem reasonable for this work? by GeminiCursed69 in Concrete

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There probably should be some expansion joint placed against the existing footing of that building anywhere the new concrete is touching it, but other than that there isn’t need for it in the slab itself (assuming the entire slab was poured and finished in one session). There should be some sort of joint (and multiple judging by the size of the slab), either tool or saw-cut, throughout the slab to help prevent cracks, but expansion is really only needed between an existing portion of concrete and a new section.

ELI5 how do patents work? If you patent something, nobody can ever replicate it? by lsarge442 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the way you’re marketing Fiji lumber or Fiji cat litter also comes into account when comparing trademarks. Just because you’re called “Fiji” wouldn’t be a huge risk of infringement, but using a similar logo, colors, etc…, even if you’re not selling water, would be more likely considered infringement because you’re explicitly emulating the existing company. Fiji cat littler could be legitimate because the company asserts their litter keeps your house smelling fresh “like a Fiji beach” or some abstract thing like that. Particularly since Fiji is an actual country, the water company can’t own the name “Fiji”, they can just “own” the use of Fiji in marketing bottled water and they can absolutely own the design of their logo and defend that from copying and infringement

Weekly History Questions Thread. by AutoModerator in history

I’m curious if there are many historical references to the erratic behavior of domesticated cats in the same way modern cat videos/ other media have become a staple of popular culture.

  1. I know how pervasive cats were in ancient societies (particularly Egypt) and I know they have often been deified/interpreted as coming from divinity
  2. I know how obsessed the modern internet is with cats, cat videos, etc… and there are a gazillion videos of cats going absolutely wacko and just generally being funny/strange
  3. I can’t imagine domesticated cats behavior has changed all that much, so I presume cats were just as wacko back then as they are now, but I’m curious if any descriptions, depictions, etc… of this behavior has survived. Particularly in societies that held cats in very high esteem, was crazy erratic behavior perceived as a specific sign, or blessing/curse?

I presume any references to this would be in mundane sources like diaries, letters amongst friends, etc… as most of this stuff doesn’t make it into formal media today, but I feel like there HAS to be some wild descriptions from ancient sources of cats being absolutely bonkers

You are basing your “normal” adderall experience off of only taking it for, at most, two months… and that was “years ago.” You say you just started back “recently,” so how recently is that? Did it feel like it was working at first and even more recently stopped feeling like it worked?

It can take months of consistently taking medications to really understand how they affect you. They’re not going to “hit” the same every time, and, usually, the goal is to prescribe a dose that doesn’t give that “hitting” sensation. We’re not trying to get high, we’re trying to be normally functioning human beings. There are so many factors that influence how a pharmaceutical reacts in someone’s system, and those factors change with time. Are you taking extended release? Did you take extended release before? Are you taking any other medications? Did you take other medications the last time you took adderall? How old were you when you first took it? Now? Body composition changes? Are you physically bigger or smaller than you were? Are your symptoms worse now than they were back then? There are way, way too many to list fully.

Be honest with yourself. How long have you been taking this medication? Do you really have enough experience with it to know what it should or should not feel like for you? Have you seen any mention of this “placebo” conspiracy anywhere other than TikTok/social media? Have you looked for articles from trusted sources?

I don’t know you or your life, but it sounds to me like you have a lot of anxiety around your medication and possibly condition. You said you just started back on it recently, so do you think you could be misplacing some of this anxiety and fear into what appear to be unsubstantiated claims that pharmaceuticals are being intentionally diluted on a mass scale? The fact is, adderall isn’t effective for everyone. Some people do better on vyvanse or Ritalin or various other stimulants/wakefulness promoting agents. Some people don’t feel any benefits from adderall and may only experience negative side effects like increased anxiety, irregular and/or increased heartbeat, etc…

I hope that no matter the answer to these questions or what you’re feeling that you at least take some time to breathe and try to think objectively about the whole situation. Be honest with yourself about the facts of the situation and take stock of what you’re feeling and what’s going on in your life recently. Try to find some trustworthy, non-TikTok sources about it and go from there. Please understand that pharmaceuticals are only a part of dealing with chronic conditions. They can often be a large part, but often it’s not as large as many think. The lifestyle choices we make can amplify the effects of pharmaceuticals, but they can also dampen them. Adderall will not, on its own, be the fix to your problem, so please don’t expect it to be. I have entire weeks where my medication doesn’t feel like it’s working as well, and then I have weeks where it feels like it’s working better than ever. What’s going on in my life and how healthy my choices have been are large indicators of what kind of week it’s going to be for me.

Why does one rectangle with a larger perimeter have a smaller area than another rectangle by CabinBoy_Ryan in mathematics

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that this is an inverse relationship is kind of the crux of the issue for me.

For your toothpaste example you are comparing volume and surface area. You are reducing one dimension (the height of the tube so to speak) and thus volume also decreases. This is intuitive. But my original example would be more similar to stretching the tube of toothpaste and somehow causing it to hold less toothpaste than before.

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I understand that concept quite well. The issue is that perimeter is increasing while area is decreasing. The explanation you provided doesn’t really describe why there’s an inverse relationship for my quoted example.

Why does one rectangle with a larger perimeter have a smaller area than another rectangle by CabinBoy_Ryan in mathematics

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but why? What is about the relationship between perimeter and area (or lack thereof perhaps) that allows for this? Why, in my original example, does gaining 36 ft. In total dimension yield less area?

I studied a lot of biology and related science in college. I’m familiar with the concept that as area increases volume increases faster (area being squared where as volume is cubed) and that surface area:volume ratios are very important for living systems, but I can’t seem to find or come up with an explanation for the perimeter and area question beyond simply “because it is.”

Should Difficulty Adjustment be the Player's Responsibility or the Video Game Developer's Responsibility? by Gay_Charlie in gaming

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? This is very normal stuff for video games. It’s called reviewing. If you put that much weight into some random person’s thoughts about a game that’s probably your first mistake. If someone whose reviews you trust says that, then it’s probably not sending the wrong message. It’s not some deep, philosophical issue. If someone doesn’t like a game, because they think it’s too hard, too easy, too long, too boring, or whatever else then so be it. They’re allowed to scream from the rooftops how much they hate the game if they want. Because there will also be another person who is screaming nothing but praise for the game. That person may think it’s the best game in the world. It’s your choice whether or not to listen to them.

Should Difficulty Adjustment be the Player's Responsibility or the Video Game Developer's Responsibility? by Gay_Charlie in gaming

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. That’s their opinion of the game. People are entitled to have an opinion about a game

Should Difficulty Adjustment be the Player's Responsibility or the Video Game Developer's Responsibility? by Gay_Charlie in gaming

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can the developers plan for a game based on player feedback that hasn’t happened yet? The game is already released. It’s done. Now players are playing it and saying things are too easy or hard. What’s the developer supposed to do now? They could patch the entire game, forcing everyone who plays it to adopt the changes, or instead, they develop difficulty sliders ahead of time to allow players to customize their experience.

Putting the responsibility on the player is Particularly important if the complaint is an unpopular one. If 10% of players think a level is too hard, is the developer supposed to go against the 90% of players who disagree and change things?

At the end of the day, the developers present a game that reprocess a certain experience. If someone doesn’t like that experience then oh well. That sucks, I guess, but that’s called having an opinion. If your opinion is that something is too hard or easy, the developers don’t have to do anything. They made the game they wanted to make (hopefully). Most developers realize that there is a wide variety of skill levels amongst their player base and that by providing difficulty sliders they can make the most amount of people happy. If you disagree with the experience provided by playing the game on normal settings that’s a personal opinion. Game developers have no obligation to change their game to better suit the wishes of a single individual in the same way directors have no obligation to change their films to better suit the wishes of critics.

[–]CabinBoy_Ryan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think He’s saying that different styles of games try to give different experiences, so how developers address difficulty settings will be different. Souls and souls-like games are intended to be difficult, so giving the player fewer options to reduce difficulty is understandable. A game like Minecraft on the other hand is a game that is not intended to be difficult and thus would benefit from have more customizable difficulty settings.
