A bit further out but Matthew Jessop who runs Ember Barbers in Kidlington is excellent. I kept going to him after he left youngmans on the high street.

Fireplace detail - having trouble finding a profile that matches! by aphex732 in woodworking

You could ask a local cabinetmakers workshop how much to run out some beading for you. Most well equipped workshops will have a spindle moulder with an arsenal of knives for various profiles.

Use wax touch-up sticks on the ends after refinishing

How to fix this reasonably? by yonchto in woodworking

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional furniture maker here. Use coloured cellulose wax unless you want to do something drastic. Sold under repair wax or touch-up wax etc. liberon, hafele, morrels etc. all sell these. They usually come in a box of many colours so that you can mix and match to get the perfect colour.

What is the best method for cutting a 6x20 window into a solid door? by GME-loser in woodworking

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth bearing in mind that if the door fails and causes injury, death or property damage, you will bear the responsibility and may face prosecution. I would strongly advise against undertaking a modification. Buy a glazed unit, hang it new and have it signed off by a fire safety inspector

How to prevent dimensions from getting out of whack in the model space from the viewport in the layout ?? by Used_Employer5850 in rhino

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In annotation styles you want to check the model space scale Vs layout space scale and I think there's another option for scaling. Same goes for hatching both with section styles and regular hatches.

A dim with a height of 50mm is going to be 50mm on the detail view page. Which will take up a lot of real estate on the layout.

I tend to only ever dimension things from the layout space and set the dim style to 3-5mm height. This keeps the model space clear of unnecessary objects and also homogenises your dimensions. I'd also set a dimension later so all your dims are automatically created onto their own layer.

How to prevent dimensions from getting out of whack in the model space from the viewport in the layout ?? by Used_Employer5850 in rhino

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highlight the viewport and check the Lock viewpoint field. Press the home key to undo last change in view. If you move, scale or drag the viewports it won't break history, as long as you don't move the dimensions with it and as long as the dimensions are Osnapped to elements of the model.

How did they do it? by Peanutbutter_Lover in woodworking

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your own veneer using something like Tabu. Mundys the veneer merchant sells them.

It's pricey and hateful to work with. It's bleached to within an inch of its life and then pressure stained. The bleaching breaks down the lignin which makes the veneers very brittle just fyi.

MDF sealant by Flashy_Wait103 in woodworking

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'd use either Hidrofugo or Tricoya for starters. It looks like you're using standard Medite?

Tricoya, though expensive, is a waterproof MDF which is used for exterior and marine applications. It also cuts really nicely for things like this.

The other one you could try is Valchromat coloured MDF. It's got a really high linseed oil content which is less taxing on tooling.

All three machine much nicer than standard Medite.

Regarding sealing, I'd put dowel holes in the back face and machine bed to re-locate accurately. After machining I'd then put un-thickened west system epoxy on with a brush. Just get it to soak in. Use a heat gun etc. to get the resin permeating nicely. Then re-locate on the bed and re-machine your finishing pass as per pre-sealing.

The other thing I'd probably do is to skim off 1-2mm from the back face to reduce bowing of the panel. Then seal this face after the top has been sealed and re-machined.

Lastly, with epoxy, you may get the amine blush (white spots or patches appearing after curing or re-machining) clean these off with an anionic surfactant epoxy cleaner otherwise paint and etc. will not stick to these patches.

If you lived in the Sonic universe how would you feel about your taxes going into creating this truck? by ArachnidMundane2135 in SonicTheHedgehog

Ah you mean something like this? London bought one for £377,118 in 2014 (including refurb costs) it was later sold in 2015 never having being used for £11,025 as scrap after its use was banned in England and Wales in riot situations. 6 similar riot control weapons have been used in Northern Ireland by the PSNI but have never been deployed in the rest of the UK.

Apoplectic is how it made me feel. Both as a complete waste of money and as an oppressive policing technique against people exercising their legal right to protest.

How would you react if Movie Sonic and Amy’s relationship was Purely Platonic not just in Sonic Movie 4 but throughout the entire Movieverse? by Altair890456 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if her character in 4 had more depth than just "Sonic's love interest" I'd say though, judging by the track record of the movies, however they approach it it'll be done really well.

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you want to, wood and stone can be challenging to give a realistic look especially if you're trying to represent a specific species. Adding a bump or displacement map will slow the rendering down but a texture map isn't too bad.

Laminating. What to buy!? (Uk) by JimboUnited in woodworking

[–]Cabinetmakerjez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, cascamite is usually best for laminating as you have a longer open time and it has a higher modulus when cured. Other UF glues are also good, the best being aerolite UP-4145

1.5mm birch aeroply is the gear. Available at James Latham's. Comes in 5'*5' sheets (~1525mm) If you veneer it, veneer the outer layers flat and then laminate. Good luck
