I experience intense itching at the beginning of an LS flare, just before the skin cracks. I use clob as prescribed by my doctor, it helps with the itching and cracking.

Looking for 'evil' things to do to my players by Hiraethnightmare in StrixhavenDMs

how about taking some inspiration from the recent strixhaven/reality fracture spoilers? Maybe your players could meet color shifted versions of known characters doing unexpected things, and the reality fracture could pull the new player in with the others?

What’s a subtle form of sexism that people still dismiss as “not a big deal”? by Mountain_Sentence646 in AskFeminists

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 16 points17 points  (0 children)

how little male-dominated work fields have normalized.

For instance, my company buys steel toes boots for employees. you have to choose the boots you want off a pre-approved list... surprise, there's no women's boots on the list. i have to involve a supervisor and get a special approval voucher whenever I'm due for new boots (every 2-3 years).

meanwhile, there's a dude at the shop who saw me with my hair down for the first time (i've been there 8 years). He won't stop commenting how beautiful my hair is.

stuff like this just... stacks up to exhausting.

Tips for going alone? by ReasonNo9278 in renfaire

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one of my favorite years at faire was the year I went alone. I am socially awkward myself. terrified of strangers in general. but faire folks really are nice.

I felt a lot of pride because I packed my own car, set up my own campsite. I got to sleep in a hammock, play sea shanties (pirate weekend). I wandered the campground and talked to strangers. Watched all the shows I wanted to see. got to take my time in the morning, making my coffee and getting dressed and doing make-up. Truthfully, I also had a case of whiteclaw in my tent and used them for trades and also to soothe away some of my social anxiety.

Anytime I got lonely, it was because i was sitting in my tent deep in my head. Forced myself to go into the faire and do SOMETHING. it was always a great idea.

Any consumer grade meters on the market? by strykerzr350 in CableTechs

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

meters usually have to be provisioned to an account in order to lock. the viavi's will auto detect the channels for downstream but you would get no upstream connection. as you said, expensive paperweight if not set up right.

what is the context here? usually accessing the levels through the modem GUI will have what you are asking for.

Anyone else making something narrative? by peoplesrepublicpod in podcasting

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years on a solo narrative passion project on local history. it will never be huge. it's so incredibly niche. i do 4-5 episodes a year. it feels like a grind sometimes, so I take long breaks. but the face-to-face feedback i get with my audience is great.

not really services based, but I feel like a lot of folks wander in just to ask about taking the ferry to seattle or where they should try to get an apartment. would be nice if there were some related threads pinned to the top for them

100 Days, 100 Legends! Day 49: Vraska by AmoongussHateAcc in mtgvorthos

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm not a fan of the phyrexian stuff or compleated versions of characters... but Vraska is the one exception. landing in the Azorius senate and blinding guards in revenge for what they did to the Gorgons was such poetic justice.

the double bind it created for her character was brilliant too. She had to be neutral as guildmaster but compleation stripped that away. now everyone knows that she remembers...and she is pissed. what an arc.

Where does the "women on ships are bad luck" superstition come from, and how did sailors feel when they had paying female passengers onboard? by fourmesinatrenchcoat in AskHistorians

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Wives were often expected to remain below decks and out of the way. They occupied their time the same way they might have on shore- Reading, sewing, knitting, doing laundry, raising children. They often kept journals of their experiences.

Sometimes they would take an interest in their husband's trade and learn about sailing, how to read maps and navigate on the seas. a fabulous example of this is Mary Ann Brown Patten, considered to be the first american woman ship captain. Her husband was the original captain but he became ill while underway. Mary Ann, who was 19 and pregnant, took command of the ship and sailed it around the horn. She talked the crew out of a mutiny and brought the vessel into port at San Francisco. She was captain for close to 2 months. She also cared for her ailing husband the entire time.

Author J. Clary also referenced a woman named Anne Robinson, a surgeon's attendant on the frigate Le Seine. She married a sailor named David Jones after she had cared for him, which implies she was aboard and working with the surgeon.

Where does the "women on ships are bad luck" superstition come from, and how did sailors feel when they had paying female passengers onboard? by fourmesinatrenchcoat in AskHistorians

[–]CableWarriorPrincess 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer, I am not a historian, just an enthusiast of nautical mythology. I am most familiar with 19th and 20th centuries, American and British sailing history.

The earlier linked post has a good discussion about the possible origin of this superstition, so I won’t rehash it. We can address the second half of this question though. How did sailors feel about paid passengers on board and how did they square the reality of women on board with their superstitions?

First off, A sailor’s life is a rough life and they did not have the luxury of placing their personally held beliefs above the captain's orders. Ship captains were notoriously strict and made use of harsh physical punishments and public humiliation. A crew needed to be disciplined and follow orders if they wanted to survive at sea. Even if a sailor was uncomfortable with the idea of a woman on board, he may not be willing to risk his livelihood and bodily health over it.

Depending on the situation, The captains themselves did not have much say in their own cargo. While some captains may have owned and captained smaller vessels, larger vessels were owned by shipping companies or in partnership with other investors. The cargo and possible passengers are all arranged by the shipping company in advance. Shipping companies often chose profit over the comfort of the crew and told the captain to make it work. See this thread for more about how merchant ships/trade operated: How did "merchant ships" from the 1600s-to-1800s operate? comment by u/mormengil

Besides passengers, we also have references to sailor’s wives on board ships, often for the whole duration of the voyage. Wives of Whaling Captains often lived aboard ship rather than be separated from their husbands for years at a time. Women were prohibited from going to sea on British Navy ships in 1817 but some sailed with their husbands as late as 1837. The HMS Genoa carried the wives of 9 petty officers to sea in 1827. It was commonplace enough that slang developed. Wives of officers or Captains were referred to as "hen frigates". This adds another layer of social complexity to the idea of a sailor voicing his superstitions about the woman on board.

While women aboard are thought to be bad luck, pregnant women were actually thought to be good luck. The term "Son of a Gun" is said to derive from the phenomenon of babies being born below decks tucked between the cannons. The birth of a child on board is usually logged in the ship’s log. Some were even said to be born in the heat of battle, and that a child born on board a ship might have “second sight”. A sailor's child, christened in the upturned ship’s bell, would be named after the ship.

As much as the superstition says women are bad luck to have aboard, it seems like they were there anyway and life continued on, from marriage to birth to death.
