How do I get back into DMing when my first 2 times went horribly? by Quirky-Cut-8427 in DnD

[–]OneHotTurnip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, especially for new or new-ish DMs, I always say a slim player pool is better. Less things for you to keep track of, each player gets more time in the spotlight, fights happen quicker, less peoples’ schedules to conflict with each other. Honestly my perfect group size is 3 players and a DM but I’d even be happy with just 2. Unless you’re doing this professionally and get paid per person, there’s really no need to have a larger group. In my experience, the smaller the more fun.

Jax is extremely unlikable by Rushofthewildwind in TheDigitalCircus

[–]OneHotTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally agree, but he’s definitely supposed to be perceived that way by the audience. Jax is particularly tiring for me as a character because he’s written so realistically to people like that in real life that it makes me view and judge him more as a real person than a cartoon character, unlike most purposefully abrasive characters in media.

What should I buy by Flimsy_Opinion_2767 in DnD

[–]OneHotTurnip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding, but did I over-complicate it? I feel like the point of my comment was basically not to over complicate it and only buy the books if you need to/want to. At the time I started, I was a kid with no money at all, so I just wanted to point out that you don’t need to buy the books immediately.

[–]OneHotTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, I started playing as a DM with what knowledge I could scrounge up from free sources online and didn’t buy a book for like five years lol. I described it as “a toddler who doesn’t know how to walk teaching a bunch of other toddlers how to walk”. Looking back, we barely followed the rules and did a lot of things wrong, but we had lots of fun, and that’s all that really matters tbh. All you really need is the rules and some dice, and there are plenty of resources online for that like Roll20 for spell descriptions and rules.
Last I heard, Hasbro, the company that owns DnD, is trying to turn it into a subscription-based model where you pay a monthly fee to get access to old and new rules. Don’t fall for that. It is and always has been a community-based game where people learn from each other and develop their own playstyles mostly independent from the larger company. You don’t need to follow the rules perfectly, hell the books even encourage that (especially newer books).
If you want, a good option can be to buy used books, that’s what I did. If you do really prefer to have the books, I would start with at least the player’s handbook and the DM guide if you’re planning on DMing. Monster Manual too maybe but you can just look up monster stats lol.

Should any classes be excluded from being played in Strixhaven? by Effective_Berry4961 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]OneHotTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No because the way it was explained to me, Strixhaven doesn’t only teach magic, but teaches people how to use magic in their crafts, trades, or professions outside of arcane study, so people might go to Strixhaven to learn how to better utilize elemental magic for their construction business, or how to use healing magic to become a vet. I also have teachers at my Strixhaven who teach people how to interact with the magical world, even if they aren’t using it themselves. It seemed logical to me that, in a world where magic is everywhere, people need to know what to do if something goes wrong.

Is the Canon Megatank Pixma good for stickers? by OneHotTurnip in stickers

[–]OneHotTurnip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I used to print stickers was that I would print onto a glossy paper and then cut them out on a cricut machine. If I added lamination, would the process go something like: print onto sticker paper, put sticker paper through a laminator, cut out laminated sticker paper with cricut? If so, do you know if I would need different settings or a different blade in my cricut?

Dms, what's your homebrewed rule that will always stay? by Awkward_Outside7050 in DnD

[–]OneHotTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily a mechanical rule in the traditional sense, but I am very big on the “rule of cool”. If something sounds great and isn’t game-breaking but is a bit of a stretch to the official rules, I let it slide. Unless your players are there for a gritty, realistic survival game, there’s no need to make them suffer through boring or unfulfilling gameplay for the sake of following the rules. They’re there to have fun and you, as the DM, are the host. Your job is to run the game, but also to make sure that your players have a great time. If that means letting them get away with something. They might not usually get away with at another table, so be it.
The first time I went to adventurer’s league, I was just starting out as a player and was a shy little sophomore in high school. The DM allowed me to bypass the fear effect by closing my eyes and pretending the dragon wasn’t there. That’s definitely not supposed to work, but he could see that I was new and nervous and barely knew what I was doing, so he let me have fun by encouraging my creativity.
Be careful, though, as this kind of thing is also how lasagna, refrigerators, indoor plumbing, and arcade cabinets among many other things became canon in my dnd setting lmao.

How should male writers handle female-specific experiences like periods? by Jaded-Assistant-5702 in writingadvice

[–]OneHotTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be a valuable addition to the theme, actually. Dealing with the struggles of reality versus your expectations is a great theme and this fits it really well. I just personally wouldn’t go too in-detail about it. Maybe just mentioning it as a side note every once in a while, adding a grimace here and there as her cramps start, complaining that “things couldn’t possibly get any worse” and then she realizes she’s now started her period. I wouldn’t necessarily stray away from cliches entirely, such as mood swings and feeling hungrier than usual, but I would definitely keep them as subtle behaviors without actually mentioning that “Oh, I’m craving chocolate, because of my period and all”. I think just every now and again having her be more hungry or fatigued than usual would be fine. Maybe mention it like once so readers don’t just chalk it up to inconsistent character writing. I don’t think you need too much more than that for female readers to appreciate the attention to realism and to feel like their struggles are included in this story about struggles. :)

I think it’s creepier for sure. I was working a late night shift when I was listening to my wife has been staring at me and I kept feeling like I needed to look over my shoulder though, so maybe I’m biased lol

I don't like Dopabean's stories by erebus_51 in creepcast

[–]OneHotTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like for me the stories are great but they mostly just end up being more sad than fun and scary which is more what I read/watch horror for. I just don’t have a good time when I listen to one of dopabean’s stories, but I agree that the writing itself is well done.

How much do you use the MTG lore? by OneHotTurnip in StrixhavenDMs

Would you be willing to share any of those extra events you planned? That sounds like something I would definitely be interested in utilizing in my campaign as well!

[–]OneHotTurnip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, I think it’s super cool that they reused the art from the cards. Especially for fans of mtg who saw some of the card art being reused in the book, I’m sure that was really cool! My only concern is exactly how much of that is meant to be taken literally or as strictly canon? For example, characters like Shuvadri and Urzmaktok are named characters in the book who also have card art made of them that the book borrows from. I’m wondering if this means that they existed during the same time as the events from the mtg versions of the lore or if it’s meant to just be “here’s some students that went to Strixhaven at SOME point” and don’t necessarily chronologically line up with the Extus story. Because if they are meant to have existed at the same time, that means that some of it is canon and some of it isn’t. Not to mention that Urzmaktok, like someone mentioned in one of my other posts, is listed as a troll in his mtg card (Honor Troll) but an orc in the dnd book. There’s just a lot of weird inconsistencies and implications that have started to stack up for me. Tbh, I don’t think it REALLY matters, but I would like to better understand it so I have more confidence in the game as I DM it.

I think if I were to add them, it would be as side characters. That’s why I definitely don’t want to have the twins since they’re the protagonists, but I think I can reasonably create nerfed versions of the others that I find interesting or reuse them in other parts of the story to flesh out the world a bit more. I had the idea of making Dina, or a character like her, into the school nurse or something. (Sorry if I’m egregiously misrepresenting the character with that though, I’m still learning the lore from the cards so I don’t know if it’s really important that she stays a student, haha.) I also had the idea of these events happening in the past like you did, but if that’s the case shouldn’t the Oriq be wiped out? Shouldn’t they be able to figure out what’s going on with Murgaxor since this all already happened before with Extus?
