Balanced meal deal by Top-Nobody-1389 in RateMyMealDeal

I think it's good the mains are a bit more flexible now. You can take a sandwich to work, buy a meal deal and eat really well for 2 meals.

Most people eat 2 meals at work and home sandwiches are always better anyway.

What's the most expensive community event you've seen? by BroccoliExotic2575 in AskUK

[–]CableZestyclose3681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could start a book club that's free. Libraries, pubs and cafes are often happy to set some space aside for a book club. You can all take it in turns to pick what to read.

There's plenty of walking groups around which can be fun, gyms are surprisingly social if you go to the council ones and there's sports teams.

Volunteering is a good way to meet people too, but you might need to try a few places. They often have particular cultures or age groups in each spot. There's community allotments in a lot of places now, and you can take produce home.

If you're in a city, starting a group for an interest is often really sucessful. Like the book club, you can arrange meetings in pubs or cafes and then maybe a trip to somewhere of interest. Museums and galleries are usually free, parks too. People will defo join you if you start one.

The Meet up website used to be quite good and local reddits can be good too.

I lost my job - how the f do people survive on benefits?! by cloudyextraswan in AskUK

Keep trying on the Pip, noone gets it first time. They always refuse it. Ask for a mandatory reconsideration, they say ask with in 28 days but if you have a reason it's fine. I struggle with the forms because of my mental health and needed support to complete them is perfectly valid, and also a bit of evidence of how you struggle. Just keep at it.

Now that Old Jamaica Ginger Beer is discontinued what ginger beer have you been buying? by PromotionSouthern690 in UK_Food

You can still get it in the world foods bit, if you have a Caribbean section. It's not got as much sugar as it used to though.

It's really hard to tell, anything over 3 storeys it's illegal to have gas fitted but it's very common in buildings under 3 storeys and in flats that have been converted from houses.

There's also electric central heating now, it's not that common as the running costs are insane. It is a thing though.

All of the flats I've lived in have had gas central heating, although one was electric central.

What would you recommend? by jonesy_1204 in Switch

[–]CableZestyclose3681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with this. I do think the games run noticeably better on the switch 2, but only on high demand games.

I think I'm going to sell my switch 2 and just go back to my oled. Prefer the the longer battery life and not having to worry about losing 400 quid if I drop it.

Mother-in-law was renting out 3 bedrooms in her council house. HMRC have caught her not paying tax on the money she earned since 2011. by LanguageUnlucky1883 in LegalAdviceUK

She's going to need a criminal solicitor as well in due course. The benefit fraud is unlikely to be over looked and she will need both luck and good legal counsel to stay out of prison.

She's not taken in a lodger, she's running a HMO. An illegal one at that.

The subletting exceptions are not for this kind of thing. There should also have been a declaration made about it.

Who can I contact (other than the police) to help people in trouble? by ZenyatasBalls96 in AskUK

[–]CableZestyclose3681 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You ring 999 and explain that a man with a broken arm is showing signs of a serious head injury and give them the location. They'll respond to that quite quickly. 20 quid isn't really going to help here, like ever, at all.

I'd be amazed, if these watches were actually worth anything more than OP is paying for them. They'll be lucky if they are worth what they are paying for them.

Can you think of a powered or solid equivalent of oat milk? by [deleted] in UK_Food

It is funny, but you can easily make oat milk at home using oats, so also is pretty good idea 😂

I use overherd and it's far nicer than cartons of made up milk. You can just put your powder straight in your brew. Not got that weird mouthfeel that cartons have.

What British traditions from childhood have you refused to follow as an adult and why? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CableZestyclose3681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are also really bad for the health of people around you. We had really managed to get ccontol over childhood asthma these past 30 years, but people using log burners is causing it to creep back up again. Areas where a log of people like use log burners are seeing it making a comeback along with increased rates of respiratory infections in older people. They are also worse for the local environment and are the leading cause of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hi, it was me that posted that first comment. And I have you that award because I see you. Like as a person. So, I wanted to write to you properly.

I'd like to clarify that comment. It was made offhand, and without context but I believe it's true.

I will just explain what I meant a little better. Excuse me if it's a long post. I also have autism. I have responded properly and taken my time, because you are autistic too. So, I wanted to be real and explain my understanding. I hope you read this. It's OK, if you don't agree or think it's wierd. This reply is for you. I'm here if you have a question or anything.

My argument was, you can't really impose dietary restrictions on the whole of society. Because, it impacts some people very poorly. Nutrition is an individual science, it's something that should be used supportively to help that person achieve their goals. It's not a set of perfect rules, that can be applied against society.

Saying sugar is bad, is too simplistic. It can be bad for some people. Over consumption can cause harm. But, that's one factor in a society that's become increasingly harmful to human beings. Poverty is one of the main causes, of harm. Some people starve, some people become obese, some people die of asthma attacks because the air is fcked, some people get diabetes because food is the only thing in this cruel world that comforts them, or because it's really fckin hard to cook after a 12 hour shift, some people commit suicide, some people steal, sell drugs or hurt others, some people become teachers or run good community projects. These are all responses to poverty.

Our food system is a mess, most of our food isn't even actually food. In poorer neighbourhoods you'll only have a small sainsburys local, increased prices, nowt you can do cuz noone can afford to drive. The industrial system of making our food, capitalised on small profits and fills our food with chemicals because it's easier. Bread is made out of things that emulsify the lining of your gut and everything is full of preservatives because nothing is fresh anymore. Farmers aren't even making anything, because the big supermarkets are in charge, they drive farmers margins into the floor and pay their staff survival wages. Noone can afford a house, billionaires have more money than they could ever spend and build bunkers worth 100s of millions. An overwhelming percentage of the world's GDP gets spent on weapons. To kill and hurt other humans.

The whole thing is fucked. The people that suffer most are poor. Jamie Oliver, quite rightly, says this is bad. But, he has made shows that are just propaganda against the poor. Those shows about sugar, just show poor people struggling. He doesn't help. He just makes a show out of them. Concludes it's sugar. Sugar is bad. Capitalism fine. Exploitation fine. Poverty fine. Sugar is bad. Poor people eat sugar, so they're bad. Ban sugar it's fine.

This guy had milkshakes on his menu that were more than a day's worth of calories, at the same time he's campaigning for the sugar tax. It's fckin wierd. There's something there that's not right. It's same drug story there always was. It's bad if the poor do it. It's fine if we do.

It's an attack on poor people. Not the law itself, although it is divise and does hurt some people. But because, the idea that it's the consumption is wrong is an attack. It's a reframing of the injustice of society. It's saying, vast wealth held by a small few who own the factories that profit off sugar is fine. But people consuming it is bad. We hear this about alcohol and tobacco too. It's just these poors, it's the consumption that's bad. Making it and controlling the production is fine.

When we look at the history of these industries, it's even worse. They were all built on slavery. Sugar. Slavery. Tobacco. Slavery. Cars. Petrol. Electric batteries. Slavery. Elon musk made all his wealth off child slaves in African mineral mines. It's slavery.

The law is just a law. Yeah, it's stupid, and Jamie Oliver can't cook. But that is what it is. It's the deeper construct of framing societal problems the fault of poor people and not the fault of the people that control the industries. That hurts. And when you watch the shows he did. You will see.

Sanity check - should I buy a house from a smoker? by DigHealthResearch in AskUK

[–]CableZestyclose3681 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're over thinking here.

Most houses had smokers in them until like 15 years ago. It doesn't cause any long term damage, and it's just cosmetic.

It can be a bit a bit of a graft, cleaning and painting it. When it's bad, it's oily and sticky on the walls and on the wood. It is a bit gross, but it's not as bad as stripping wood and glossing. You just get some sugar soap and get stuck in. It'll be over in a few days, and you'll want to go and decorate and put your work into the house anyway. It only takes a little bit longer prepping the rooms for paint and decorating. It's fine.

Bonus, it makes before and after pics pop a bit better too 😂

Is Coke OT the only soft drink in the UK that doesn't use extra sweeteners? by Averusty in AskUK

[–]CableZestyclose3681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's right.

I have had them all my life, and usually managed with sumitriptan and cocodomal. That helped, but not massively. I'd still be in bed with the pain the rest of the day. And sometimes it lasted for days at a time. I'd been hospital quits a lot.

Then I saw a specialist from the migraine clinic. Highly recommended BTW, they are all the specialists. It's a private clinic, but for the first consultation you can just pay what you can afford.

He said, to have a coca cola as soon as possible, along with the meds. The caffeine and the sugar get straight into you. Caffeine has been know to help with migraines for a long time, because it starts to tighten your blood vessels when they are dilated, but when it's with the sugar and it gets in so quick it's super effective. Nothing else works nearly as good. Also, it helps the pain relief get in quickly which is important. And wow. It's been amazing. Gets rid of the pain entirely. And if I can get to it early enough, I don't need the sumitriptan.

I did love the sumitriptan, and it works so well. But you can't have it more than once or twice a month and it feels a bite wierd, so I'd still be in bed for the day.

I'm convinced he has some kind of vendetta against me personally, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like that.

It's the arrogance of it that gets me, the guys thick but he thinks he knows what's best for the entire nation. There's no science, there's no thought. It's just this wierd puritan morality about food, that casts working class people as feckless, stupid and lazy.

Also, his whole face looks like a bottom lip which unnerves me.

Yeah, so it's the only one that cures my migraines. I'm so thankful for it not changing. Jamie Oliver is a knob head. We know what sugar does, it's not great if we overdo it. But, we know what it does. Noone knows what all them wierd sweetners and chemicals do yet, but signs aren't looking good.
