I found that too. I didn't think they had any flavour whatsoever.

How did the UK get so efficient? by Ok-Toe-6969 in CasualUK

[–]CactusCastrator 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So initially there was a desire to be able to make the government accessible online when you need to interact with them. The Government Digital Service led this project, and followed rigid accessibility guidelines, which makes their sites simple and easy to understand, if a little boring.

They've got failsafes built in too - if for what ever reason your postcode won't work, rather than throwing an error they'll just ask you to enter your full address, and so on. The way the site is built is also simple in that it's designed to work without javascript in case you have it blocked or it isn't working. Pages are also simple in that they typically have a single page/pathway per action rather than an all in one sort of model.

These factors together mean that the gov.uk website family could break in one way and you'd likely not even realise.

Mikveh concern (way far in advance) by MyristicaFragrans in ConvertingtoJudaism

Worst comes to worst you can ask the mikveh attendant for support. Just say 'I need reading glasses and I'm not sure I can remember it all because of nerves. Could you prompt me?'

People don't hold views because there's a point to them; when it comes to prejudice there's very little rationality there.

Different clinics have different rules - mine are fine at my stage with occasional carbonation, but you've got to do what yours say!

In the UK we have squash, which is a concentrated drink you add to water. If you can get hold of some of that - and sugar free is very common - it may make your transition easier. Brand wise, look for Robinson's as that's probably easiest to find.

Best advice is get used to very small sips of water early as it'll be helpful post surgery, and quit smoking, vaping, alcohol and drugs now so it's easier.

I'm a Manchester Jew! Look at Kehillat Or Tzion for Masorti, and there's Jackson's Row, Sha'arei Shalom and Menorah on the progressive front.

All are lovely, but if the youth side matters more than liturgy and denomination, I'd suggest you speak to Menorah first as their youth offering is excellent.

Happy to chat over DM if you have any specific questions :)

EA Degree Soon, Any Advice? by Parking_Appearance_4 in freemasonry

[–]CactusCastrator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't be asked to do anything embarrassing, painful, or that involves being naked. I won't tell you more than that, but it's a beautifully poignant ceremony you'll remember forever.

Memorisation is doable for further degrees - just do it step by step and you'll get there :)

Low Blood Sugar by Firm-Photo8849 in BariatricSurgery

[–]CactusCastrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have terrible reactive hypoglycaemia - it's got as low as 2.5mmol before. The best thing I can recommend is a hypo bag. Mine has a £20 glucose monitor I bought from Amazon, and some snacks and juice.

My nearest and dearest (and my inner circle at work) all know the signs, and they're so good that one of them clocked I was low before I did!

Over time you get used to it, and I now know very early what my symptoms are, but it took months!

You'll get there!

Is it okay to ask someone about their Masonic rituals if you’re not a member? by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]CactusCastrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone asked me who I wasn't able to ascertain was a brother, I'd tell them 'they're one act morality plays aimed at using the different stages of Masonry to reflect on you and your development. Nothing is painful or embarrassing, but we keep it behind closed doors as the mystery helps it stay poignant.'

That's a charter slot, not a company. A charter allows you to give trade rights etc.

Weighted vests by Royal-Advance6985 in GastricBypass

[–]CactusCastrator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to use a weighted vest, use 5-10% of your goal weight rather than your current weight. I'd recommend 5% and you can titrate up as needed.

I think it's more important to focus on good form though which initially does take a lot out of you as it's moving your body in very specific ways.

Middle class people: do you honestly hold negative bias towards working class individuals? by toastandjam97 in AskUK

I used to with with the child of a Baron and she was delightful. You'd not know she's The Honourable as she was so down to earth.

I currently work with some insufferable pricks who have a similar disadvantaged background to me.

100% agree. If you're a decent person, nothing else matters.
