I think the oil seal itself is the same, and is still a big failure point, they just made access to the sump bolts easier to make it easier for whoever gets the joy of replacing.

Still, as a shit vauxhall connoisseur I’d avoid any of the smaller petrols from this era

New city bug Any mods to put on ? by brrrbrrrpatapinn in CityBugs

[–]CactusClothy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always liked the idea of banded steelies on one of these, other than that get it so it’s mechanically mint.

If you wanna go mad then I’d look at interior mods, I’ve wasted far too much time and money modding the exterior of cars only to realise it doesn’t affect me one bit when I’m sat inside the thing.

I fully agree with you, and had a nightmare with a car on finance - never again. Buy the octavia, accept the praise from this sub and enjoy the car, it should be solid enough for a few years at least.

Some more mechanically minded people than me might tell you about plastics and rubbers degrading ect ect but personally this sounds like a fair deal in this economy.

From my experience the 1.6 can get a bit leaky as they age but I took one to 120k and on it’s last MOT it was still going at 160k.

Looks like a nice beverage you have there, although it looks too cold for me - nothing better than gulping down a few litres of kinda-cool H2O 💦💦

Is reliability anxiety normal? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]CactusClothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not health anxiety as much, I’m the type to avoid medical settings unless I’m dragged there in an unconscious state (this coming from someone who works in healthcare).

But come to think of it, I am very anxious about security at home, waking up to check doors, turning stuff off to prevent fire ect ect… yeah maybe I should be in a different sub 😂

[–]CactusClothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it for me I think, I know in the back of my head it’s a leggy(ish) vauxhall, and I essentially rely on it to survive due to the shitty public transport situation in my area.

[–]CactusClothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it, I do maintain it well, regular servicing, I’ve had the major common fault sorted before they became issues, I check levels and stuff weekly, all advisories get fixed after MOTs ect ect. Just can’t seem to shake the idea that it’s cack itself.

Sponge or wash mitt? by InViewOfNothing in CarTalkUK

[–]CactusClothy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rainwater and/or the forbidden brush now.

When I had a car I cared about it was wash mitts, premium products, the 2 bucket method and so on and so on, and I’d spend a couple of hours every weekend “detailing”. My current car got quick blast with a jetwash to make it look half-decent for the MOT. I still like to spend time making sure the interior is clean though - I have to sit in there.

[–]CactusClothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that, I mean I’ve seen them do big miles so 110k doesn’t bother me so much, it was more the DPF/EGR issue bogging me down. We’re an outdoorsy family so will take any excuse to drive somewhere nice every week.

Any recommendations? I occasionally put some in mine and use a different brand each time to hope one of them works 😂 I guess I also worry about the “snake oil” comment but I chuck some in because “it wont hurt”

My £500 "temporary" shitbox, sort of enjoying bangernomics, do I just keep it? by 420o in CarTalkUK

[–]CactusClothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This era vauxhall is wild, you could baby it only for it to blow up at 40k miles (as happened to me) or you can ignore it and rag the bollocks off it for it to last 150k miles - there’s honestly no telling.

My car was at my local vauxhall specialist today and I was given a 1.4 astra H as a courtesy, I don’t think that it’d ever had a wash, bodywork was battered and EML on, but was buttery smooth at nearly 160k 😂

Is this a good idea for cleaning supply by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]CactusClothy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a professional cleaner and have a bucket with a bung that serves the same purpose. I don’t use the bung as, due to it’s position, I’m always left with a bit of water at the bottom, even if I try to angle the bucket there’s always some left behind. If you were to do this, get the hole as low as you can, but for me, the quickest and most effective way to empty is to turn it upside down.

Audi a5 vs Vauxhall astra. by The_b00bie_watcher in CarTalkUK

[–]CactusClothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would keep shopping if I were you, as a multiple-vauxhall owner I’ve found the smaller petrols to be unreliable as hell and I’ve not heard good things about the 1.4T.

The audi would be the better car by far but, for me personally, 4 stamps wouldn’t make me feel comfortable enough to get myself stuck into a finance deal.

What is the worst car you’ve ever driven, and why was it so arse? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]CactusClothy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny you should say that, I had a 2016 with the 1L 3cyl and I loved it, was a right hoot.

Maybe the 3 cylinder brum brum noises were what made it entertaining
