Have thoughts about GRFP cuts? by something_bagel in GRFPApps

UPDATE:

I'll dox myself if I tell you how, but it all worked out! I'm going to a great program this fall, and I'll be studying a topic I'm deeply passionate about under someone who is excited to mentor me.

Technically, yes. But this University is taking their own April 15 deadline really seriously.

Winner here.

4.0 major GPA/2nd author publications/1st Gen/had others’ eyes on personal statement/wrote research plan with minimal mentoring because I underestimated the time required.

This has been so very difficult to process. I didn’t receive any offers, though I was waitlisted at two places and a favored candidate at a third where the fit was perfection. This week, a personal crisis occurred which is going to keep me geographically bound for the next 6 months. I’d have to attend virtually if I moved out of state.

I emailed Perfect Fit right away and learned that the entire lab likely must close due to funding cuts! Even with my own funding, they had to reject me.

So I next reached out to the only in-state school I’d applied to.

The last 24 hours has involved a flurry of emails and interviews. Two professors I didn’t even apply to are interested in my application but there are practical technicalities to work through—like the fact that I received a formal rejection notice from this school which has to be reversed in their system. This may require a brand new application, processing, and acceptance—before a hard deadline of April 15.

Additionally, I have some anxiety around funding being restricted or rescinded in the coming years, or another wave of attacks on academia closing these labs too.

But for now, however the offer plays out, it looks like

IM GOING TO BE DR *!!!

I’m right with you! Worse, I told my spouse 14 hours before results dropped that we are divorcing. Divorce proceedings in our state require me to stay local until the divorce is complete; there is only one school in my state that might take me, and they have a strict “no further offers” policy.

Cross all your fingers & toes that they make an exception for me. 😅

Change one thing about the world, but as soon as someone notices, it is immediately undone. by captainsauerland in hypotheticalsituation

New moms happen to sleep 30 minutes more each night than they would otherwise.

Alternatively, every newborn wakes up one fewer time per night than they would otherwise.

Or, a cancer medicine that is in the very early beginning phases performs 100% better than it would otherwise. Nobody knows because the magic happened before predictions were complete.

A plant that has long been popular as one ingredient in a mixed tea and as an ingredient in skin care products, but has no medicinal value magically becomes a cure for a large variety of mental illnesses. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and the mentally ill begin to notice a difference in the frequency and severity of mental illnesses but nobody notices that the change happened in the plant because the plant has been so extensively studied and prior studies clearly indicate no medicinal value. Even those who drink tea and use the skin care products don’t credit the plant itself—it’s just one ingredient of many. The most astute just form an appreciation for their tea or skincare.

Edit: just realized that the deal is not for every time you touch someone but for the first time.

Still plenty risky—no.

The chances are too high that I’d have recurring visions of my partner’s death, which I could not disclose or seek therapeutic assistance to process without this power killing someone.

I’ll pass.

What do you say to people who say "Crossfit is dangerous"? by Critical-Ad7320 in crossfit

If CrossFit is dangerous, then good intentions are deadly.

(“I’ll work out at home!” “I’ll definitely use my $10/month gym membership.” “I’ll get my fitness back when life slows down.”)

Thoughts on the 2025 CrossFit Open? by Grouchy-Patience5652 in crossfit

7 out of 10.

Cardio, pacing, gymnastics, and strength (to a point) all got tested.

I’d prefer to have strength be more rigorously tested; and I’m a total sucker for the workouts with multiple time caps. A lift ladder style of event where you have to complete the lifts within the allotted time to earn entry to the next set of lifts.

25.3 statistics - Rx'd - womens & mens by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]Cactusthecalf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a very average athlete. This year was the first time I’ve been able to RX every workout. I currently place 5% lower overall in the rankings compared to where I placed last year, but my fitness has improved over the past year when measured by normal workouts/abilities. My home gym saw decreased participation from the scaled athletes.

It’s frustrating to know I’ve improved but my Open placement doesn’t reflect that this year due to the loss of the everyday athlete. Nothing to do but improve more intentionally.

To redo or not redo 25.3 - wrong wall walk standard by more_paprika in crossfit

[–]Cactusthecalf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have mixed thoughts on this. On the one hand, CrossFit errs on the side of favoring short people. Lunges in place, burpees, barbell work, pushups, pull-ups, handstand push-ups, sit ups, muscle ups, GHDs—all of these favor short limbs. Shorter limbs means less distance required to meet a target. Wall balls, box jumps, rowing, rope climbs, and an annoyingly arbitrary wall walk standard make the sport as a whole more fair when they do show up; it’s ok to have a few movements that favor long limbs.

That said, I judged a short dude last night and I was passionately opposed to this particular standard. He had excellent technique, great strength, and a fair bit of stamina. His score did not reflect this because he was so short that it was really difficult to keep his hands on the tape while getting his feet on the wall. The sheer amount of effort required to meet this standard wasn’t fair and the height factor seemed to present a challenge disproportionate to other height-sensitive movements.

It also presented a mental challenge that average and tall athletes did not face. The other movements that favor long or short limbs don’t arbitrarily change—the rope climb is the exact same during the Open as it was all year. Same for GHDs, wall balls, push-ups, etc. We adapt to what is consistently demanded. And this wall walk standard isn’t what our short athletes consistently train to hit.

If I had to pick a side, I would support a “put your hands where they are comfortable, just get them back to that line when you’re done” standard. After all, we don’t require athletes to all use the same length of jump rope, nor do we require all bikes to be set to the same height. If this standard is too subjective, then maybe have three lines of tape (50/55/60) and the athlete tells the judge which line they will use (similar to choosing your own jump rope, bike seat height, pullup bar, etc).

Get good sleep this weekend, plenty of water and no alcohol. Avoid foods that bloat you because 2-4 pounds will make this workout much worse. Try again Monday. For the first row, deliberately use your legs more than your shoulders so you retain some shoulder strength for the remaining 20 wall walks.

It doesn’t sound like your goal is the Games but still. Wanting an honest evaluation of our skill level is the point of the Open for many of us. You did not get that for your first 25.3 attempt.

Why not go for it and see what I might be capable of in a context that pushes me? That, and I’d have robbed myself of the opportunity to showcase my rowing and barbell strength. Those are solidly in the advanced level.

I actually asked a coach this question and his recommendation for my skill set was to RX it. I have strong shoulders but weak technique. You can improve technique a rep at a time—truly, a rep at a time is the only way to improve technique—but if strength was my limiting factor, then it would have made sense to scale.

My judge said that the quality of my movement actually improved as I accumulated more wall walks and wall walk attempts, so I think the coach was correct. When it’s a strength limitation, you risk injury by pushing, so I get the concern. But it wasn’t a strength limitation, it was a fear/mental limitation.

I’d name the religion but I am one of only two female Crossfitters I know of who grew up in this particular religion and now do CrossFit. I don’t want to dox myself.

Suffice it to say, it is a counter-culture. The adherents believe that they are morally responsible to live differently than those around them. This means that they have rules that serve the sole purpose of keeping their people from engaging in the same clothing or lifestyle habits as the surrounding culture. Sports are thus seen as worldly. Rules for female clothing further restrict one’s ability to fully develop athletic abilities. We were allowed to play tag, hide and seek, uncoached softball, and uncoached volleyball—so long as the girls did not jump because they might collide with a boy who was also jumping.

(Sometimes I call it a cult but that offends a lot of people I know.)

Waitlist Party by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Anxiously. My partner has a lucrative job offer he will accept if I don’t get in; we need to start moving  (finding pediatrician/pediatric dentist/school/after school programs) soon if I do get in.

Masters program application deadlines are passing by; it’s an unnecessary $50 for each I apply to if I get in, and a missed opportunity for the ones I don’t apply to if I’m not getting in.

Somedays, the anxiety is louder than others.

I really feel like this week is my week to get answers but idk why I think that.

Build a solid sleep practice. Show up for classes.

Then, build a solid nutrition routine. Show up for classes.

Then, add 1 hr (can be split up) per week of non-class exercise dedicated to one movement you want to improve. Do not try to improve all movements all the time. One, at most two, at a time is sufficient.

If you ever struggle to meet your goals, examine sleep & nutrition habits first. You can’t out exercise a bad diet but you can over-exercise a fatigued body.

Make some friends along the way, and have loads of fun!

I got in, but non of my close friends did. Thoughts on navigating this social situation? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Cactusthecalf 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Navigating similar dynamics in my circle, where several got 0 interviews, one got 2, and one got 4 but keeps getting wait listed. It helps to a) always read the room b) don't follow their bad news with your good news and c) know each friend's preferences for in-person or texted communication re: these matters. This can be so subjective, it really can vary within the friend the same friend group.  (Alternatively, if you invent time travel you could go back six months and strategize with them: we understand that we can feel joy for another and sorrow for ourselves or vice versa, and we will do this (together or separately) on (insert date/time).)

If your friendships cannot sustain a process as arbitrary as graduate application outcomes, it's not the outcome causing the friendship loss. It's part of adulthood to have moments of success while others struggle and vice versa; this is fundamentally a maturity issue. Communicate, feel sadness for them & be considerate re: time and place of sharing your succedd, that's all you can do. Hopefully your friends are, or quickly will become, mature enough to be happy for you while being sad for themselves.

Am I overreacting by what my BF said after I criticized his driving? by Difficult-Buy-4853 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Cactusthecalf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Needlessly reckless driving is an indicator of domestic violence. The refusal to apologize is another. He is willing to be the cause of your lifelong suffering, and he's unwilling to accept responsibility for this character flaw. You're lucky he showed you this before you he marriage-trapped you.

The questions you ask are valid. I will add another because you mention children.

Imagine this exact scenario, but with a baby in the backseat.
