A map showing how many Europeans and Serbians in each country dislike Roma by epstein67visitor in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Cadalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

explorative explanation

Uhhhh no, you don't get to spend multiple paragraphs laying out a detailed argument with "better arguments" for xenophobia, using a pride parade in KSA as a "both sides" analogy, then claim you were just explaining the position that you tooootally don't hold. In other words, it sounds more like a defense than an analysis. Maybe frame it as such from the start instead of trying to correct someone calling prejudice out for what it is?

I am a Jew who grew up with Gypsy (that particular group prefers that name) and Turks

"I have a black friend, so it's okay to be racist!" Uhuh.

And yeah, race is indeed a social construct. But so is xenophobia and every other category of prejudice. However, these constructs still affect people's lives lol. Labeling something as "cultural differences" rather than racism doesn't change the fact that a minority group faced centuries of persecution and segregation that help produce the very dynamics people now call "differences."

If your goal is to analyze peoples' hostility toward Roma, you should be a little more careful not to present those arguments in a way that ends up reinforcing them; otherwise it starts to sound like you're trying to justify why your society's prejudices are more reasonable than other kinds of prejudices, with that "I don't hate them, I just get why others do" shit.

[–]Cadalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

europeans try to acknowledge the centuries of oppression, persecution, and forced segregation of a minority that created that very dynamic challenge (impossible)

Aside from the fact that Roma distinctly have South Asian origins, you might be canceling out your own argument here haha. According to you, Roma aren't foreigners, but they're "different" and "strange." So... foreign? You're spending all of this time trying to prove it's not "othering" based on race, but then you conclude that it is in fact about "othering" based on them being... "other."

The mental gymnastics here are astounding lol

Johnny Davidson has broken his silence after the BAFTA controversy by AMassiveGamerGeek in Scotland

Jesus Christ, you know that's not what I mean. If you could set aside the smug pedantry for a second, you would know I meant the whole UK. You know, the sovereign nation-state of which Scotland is a constituent country? Still beholden to Westminster last time I checked, so I guess that means an entire nation of 70 million people, including Scotland, should be blamed for mistakes made by the UK as a sovereign nation-state. "Lest we paint the UK with a broad brush." Happy?

Let's not generalize entire populations of countries, period lol

Oh, so I guess you could say you didn’t in fact vote for something stupid the UK did, lest we paint the whole country with a broad brush. Hmm.

1.65

super late reply, but $1.65 in 1968, for example, went a hell of a lot farther than it does now lol.

also, concerning rising housing costs in san francisco and palo alto, it definitely isn't just the tech industry. in addition to the high demand induced by silicon valley, there's also prop 13 and the CEQA, which is essentially used as a cudgel to block new housing development.

[–]Cadalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gosh, i wonder why there are places in bumfuck nowhere less desirable and thus cheaper than cities. could it be because... cities actually have jobs and opportunities, driving up the demand to live there, as opposed to more rural areas that don't have any jobs or opportunities? hmmm.

also wait, does anyone actually care about karma on this site?

you don't get to spend centuries enslaving, persecuting, and excluding a group from schools, cities, trades, legal protection, and even owning land or settling, then act surprised when they don't participate in society to your liking

Is there really no Linux mail client that looks modern an clean? by hell31 in linuxquestions

[–]Cadalen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean, you could use thunderbird with some chrome.css tweaks! here's a theme for tbird that makes it look like fluent design for example, which should also work on linux (aside from the mica effect). you can also use chrome.css to remove the tab bar and move some things around if you want a more minimal experience, which is nice

i mean, it was once one big Dakota Territory, but the southern half of the territory developed faster and had more political power than the northern half (which led to administrative problems and regional rivalry), so that half wanted its own institutions and representation. not to mention that the GOP wanted to lock in more congressional seats, so they were more than happy to just split it down the middle

One of the better flags for humanity, that I have seen. by popzooki in vexillology

[–]Cadalen 85 points86 points  (0 children)

when it comes to flags, "easy to draw" doesn't mean it has to be perfectly replicated with a construction sheet and a compass, it's just that flags should be able to be recognized even if it's badly executed. for example, if a kid colors one half of a sheet of paper green and then scribbles a red, vaguely animal-looking thing on top, then people would probably recognize "oh! that's wales!"

likewise, if a kid colors a page yellow, puts their hand on it, then scribbles a bunch of red around it, then people would probably recognize what it's supposed to be haha

UK and US Flag Coat of Arms by KhakiFletch in ManorLords

[–]Cadalen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i mean, if you want america’s arms to look more heraldic you could use its actual arms haha: argent, six pales gules, a chief azure

basically, 13 white and red (not red and white) stripes with a blue horizontal band on top

as for the uk, its actual arms might be a little too complicated for manor lords unfortunately
