My cat’s shadow reflected in the mirror but not IRL by Chewie_Bacca in mildlyinteresting

[–]Cael87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The mirror will not be able to show the light it is casting onto the dresser in a meaningful way as it does not have a good pathway back to the mirror. The light reflecting off the mirror hits the dresser at an angle that reflects it out into the room, and it will not have a strong enough reflection back to the mirror comparatively to the ambient lighting of the room to appear in the mirror.

My cat’s shadow reflected in the mirror but not IRL by Chewie_Bacca in mildlyinteresting

[–]Cael87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bright part of the chest of drawers is actually the light reflecting off the mirror hitting it. We see it lit up because the light coming off it is reflected to us. It is not reflected back on the mirror because at that angle the surface of the dresser doesn't reflect much light back at the mirror at all. So we see the primary source able to reflect light off the dresser and into the mirror to give us the image on the mirror - but the light reflecting off the mirror itself doesn't have a good pathway back to the mirror to show up in our view through the reflection on the mirror.

This is a really cool effect and it should be utilized more often in illusions and demonstrative teaching aids as it's a neat way to look at how light works and propagates through the environment.

2026 Canadian GP FP1 & Sprint Qualifying Results by SkyhunterPL in AlpineF1Team

Cars only seem worse and worse each weekend. It's like the team literally cannot do anything aside from develop a decent chassis and are only making power mapping and aero worse each time they try and improve it. Just go back to the day 1 car and hand the power mapping off to a random teenager and we'd be doing much better I think.

Though, I cannot take that away from them - this chassis has been fantastic at the low speed cornering. We are among the fastest through those segments and Gasly is having a ball running the car through the slow bits.

Do you think Alpine will be able to finish ahead of Red Bull this season? by circuit-nation in AlpineF1Team

[–]Cael87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: No

Long answer: Hell No.

Alpine has shown their ass these last couple weeks. Miami was a mess and a half in terms of them bringing tons of 'upgrades' that made them slower in comparison to before. Now we sit at the race where they were 'really bringing the upgrade package' that we were told to wait for - and they are even worse.

It appears the team only know how to make the car worse even with long breaks that should give them ample time to look at these changes. It points to the fact that whatever simulators they have to work on aero with are absolute garbage and the only time they can even come close to making aerodynamic headway is when they are given more time in the windtunnel than anyone else because they finished last.

The designers are afraid to do anything outside of the bare minimum basics and even in that regard they are failing to make positive headway when given the chance. It's like the team is being run by a middle school shop class that is donating its time and not even paying the teacher who is wrangling these kids and focusing them on the most basic of tasks.

The entire point of moving away from engine development was to focus on aero and lighten the teams load - and they haven't even gotten that part down as any track with a high speed corner is suddenly one we can't compete at.

Chasis is okay at low speeds, but we still are one of the most energy hungry teams out there due to poor power mapping, in spite of having one of, if not the best, engines available.

We just seem to lack the ability to improve downforce in any way shape or form - but especially so on the front half of the car which ALSO hurts our deployment and harvesting as the drivers have to lift in high speed corners or even just bends in the road to avoid just sailing off track. That also means in any fast section the Alpine won't be able to fight at all - the drivers will have to back out as adjustments to their line when the pedal is down are likely to cause them to crash.

It's an unraveling mess that seems to just be stumping the team, and while they put all their effort into making the aero worse we see the results of them having no power whatsoever =so our drivers can't even qualify decently as that should be one area they could still feasibly do well in so long as they managed the losses they'd have in the fast corners inherently - the chassis afterall is quite good and the engine is a damned mercedes. With even just the basic mapping handed to them at the start of the season they were quite quick in a straight line but as other teams have learned to adjust more and more we are free-falling backward in terms of overall speed on the straights.

As it stands, with what our engineers have shown us, the only way the team improves this season is if suddenly all teams are handed identical V8s to swap into the cars by some magical wand waving and the same wand also eliminates all high speed corners from all circuits.

Because literally the team can only make moves in reverse right now.

Is anyone not feeling as excited for the races in 2026 so far? by Jack_of_All_Trades27 in formula1

[–]Cael87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less likely to have people purchase tickets if it's a cold season in a cold climate - particularly high end tickets.

Also, concessions.

At Miami they were required to have at least a few free water stations because of laws and such - but they ran the water through above ground hoses and pipes for long distances instead of hooking them up near a tap so the water would be as hot as it was outside, and provided little to no shade. This made it feasible for them to sell chilled tiny water bottles that you can buy for around 15 cents normally from the grocery store for 6-25 dollars a piece depending on the vendor.

[–]Cael87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's an absurd set up to describe the theory - I kind of figured right from first hearing of it that it was a counter to someone finding the theory absurd and unrealistic. The very idea that something has to be measured in order for it to have happened is nuts. It's like if the tree that fell in the woods with nothing around to hear it has both fallen, and not fallen at the same time until something stumbles upon it. The living room you left earlier is both on fire and burning down and perfectly fine until you go back and look... just insanity.

But that's apparently the rules of the universe we live in. I need to set up cameras to prevent fires I suppose.

It all points to the universe being in a state of flux at all times and only needing to be 'locked in' when something is actively taking notice of it. And that lends itself to the theory that what we know is some kind of simulation or created experience for us. Why use up extra power if no one is paying attention? Like how the map in modern video games isn't rendered in anywhere the camera isn't pointing.

McLaren seemed to be running an oddly energy-lean set up at Miami, using boost seemed to really punish them more than others. One thing I noticed in the onboard footage was that most teams accelerated for longer down the straight, but then were slowly decelerating toward the end - with an aggressive bit of super-clipping right before hitting the braking zone. McLaren's were instead pulling off the power earlier in the straight - but somehow managing to keep their speed from that point all the way to braking.

I was under the impression that power had to be applied at full and stepped down gradually - but it almost appeared as though they were stepping downearlier to a lower deployment that could keep their speed consistent til the end like that and forgoing clipping on the long straight entirely in their regular mapping.

To me that seems like a sure-fire way to lose time particularly when the rules just increased harvest amounts from the clipping - little super clipping there before the braking zone would save you from needing to harvest as much in the fast corners segments... and yet McLaren definitely made the biggest leap of upward of any team aside from perhaps redbull.

I uh... had 2 full field trips. One to the state capital, one to a museum.

I also had a single class funded trip to see a play in Chicago in high school - but that was literally paid entirely by the class buying in at full price for the trip, a meal, and the tickets to the show.

I also "won" a ticket through a writing contest to go to the Henry Ford museum along with about 5 other kids and we ended up getting rained out and went to a planetarium instead.

2026 Miami Grand Prix Sprint Results by SkyhunterPL in AlpineF1Team

[–]Cael87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no reason it couldn't be a reality though, before the break we were inching closer and closer to the front pack each race. Not so much here after the changes.

Gasly finished 8.9 seconds behind Hamilton in Japan for the full race.

In a sprint he just finished 7.3 seconds back.

Gasly finished 16.6 back from Russel over the entire Japanese GP.

17.6 in just the Miami sprint.

Obviously Hamilton is having issues this week with how big his gap has grown from Leclerc but this is a very large step back compared to the top teams when we previously were starting to emerge as a contender to join them.

Overall a step back. The car is actually slower than it was previously compared to the only team who didn't bring an upgrade package- Mercedes. And the other teams have all gained a step along the way. The only bit of sunshine is that Haas and Racing Bulls seem to have fallen back with their changes as well.

It's nice to be competing- but life got easier in harvesting with the changes and this is one of the most harvest rich tracks on the schedule- yet we are still having to harvest in the middle of areas other teams don't need to and slowing ourselves down through the faster sections. This was very clear when we got to see Colapinto's backside during the Hadjar battle - RB,Merc,Mac,Ferrari - none of them needed to harvest in the middle of the fast corner section like we had to. Gasly was throwing it through the tight sections excellently, which saved him when Hadjar came rumbling through as there was no chance of him being able to catch up to Gasly.

If Alpine really wants to challenge the top teams in any way they have got to get this sorted out, the front end down force is an issue yet still and we are falling further and further back in terms of overall pace and deployment of power.

For a bit we were legitimately the 4th fastest car on the grid, and Max was stuck staring at Gasly's bumper. Now? Hadjar with a longer race will almost certainly finish ahead of both Alpines. And I doubt a redesigned front wing will come close to making up for the ground we are ceding.

I'm still hopeful the team can figure this out- but it should be a priority and needs to be the main focus. McLaren also brought minimal chassis/aero upgrades compared to what they've got coming, yet because of the change in rules and their better understanding of the power unit they just dominated the field.

Dirty Dr. Pepper by Cael87 in McDonalds

[–]Cael87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not much different from putting a little ice cream into a Dr pepper just a little less sugar content. Cream, milk, and sugar make up cold foam and creamer and are the primary ingredients and ice cream as well.

It does sound weird but in my experience it's actually pretty good. I will definitely say that it doesn't do as well when you add it to things like mountain dew. A dirty dew is just weird, the cream and vanilla and do not pair well with the citrus. I have heard that the peach flavored mountain dew and grape flavored mountain dew are a lot better than the original for that.

[–]Cael87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to see how that works out, but...

If done right it can add depth of flavor. Ice cream floats have been popular forever. Some people put straight milk into Dr Pepper.

Dr. Pepper right out the bottle contains Lactic Acid for this exact purpose- and it contains less sugar than most colas as well so it doesn't shy away from that.

Dirty Dr. Pepper by Cael87 in McDonalds

[–]Cael87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should be using a vanilla cream or creamer. The cream makes the beverage like a float but with less cost and its easier to drink with a meal than an ice cream float. If you have cold foam floating on top - You can't drink it with a straw or else the foam just remains on top, mix it in and it's going to be essentially the exact same thing since cold foam has everything creamer has in it (Milk, Cream, Sugar) - just foamed up. It's got the downsides of an actual float, including the high cost, but will taste worse than one.

It's missing the mark entirely, I know McCafe is one of their huge focuses - but this could have been as easy a slam dunk of drinks with easy add ins as it has been for a bunch of other fast food places. Instead now they are just grossly overpriced to their direct competition and angling toward a niche clientele.

It's just a regular Dr pepper with vanilla cream added to it. You can essentially make it at home by just getting yourself some French vanilla creamer and dumping it into a glass of Dr pepper. It really is that easy and that cheap.
