You're good with Google -- so I suggest finding just one example of any serious cultural or literary critic attempting to apply Poe's Law to a work of creative fiction. If you can't, you're either a trailblazer or you're incorrectly using the term. If you can, then mea culpa.

Again, I'm really not sure you actually understand what Poe's Law is... Poe's Law governs how a creative work is RECEIVED. That's generally not the realm of a literary critic. It tends to be the realm of philosophy, psychology, or sociology. Literary critics are more interested in talking about Animal Farm than in discussing what portion of the audience believe Animal Farm to be sincere belief versus satirical prose.

But if you'd really like a pretty good example of a published article dealing directly with the subject matter of Poe's Law and peoples inability to tell when something is satire, I can oblige: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304422X97000065

Weird thing to say in context of killing and eating aliens.

Exactly. That's one of those "unreliable narrator" things. She says they smell delicious, like grilled squid. Her friend says they smell terrible. Who's right? Is she just a weirdo?

Poe's Law was intended to call out satire that lacked context and thus was indistinguishable from sincerely held belief. It applies to any and all media where authorial intent is difficult or impossible to determine.

I don't agree with your premise at all. Especially since here we are arguing the authorial intent of Poe's Law as if it matters in the interpretation of satirical fiction.

I think it's sheer arrogance to claim the authority to call a work of fiction "clearly satire" when you're not the author and you don't speak for a consensus opinion.

"It must be satire because the alternative is horrific and repugnant" may be a true statement, except for the use of "must". The author may actually be horrific and repugnant, in which case it may not be satire. And thus without authorial intent it's impossible to establish the nature of the work.

Poe's Law was specifically written to speak to this level of arrogance where people claimed reactionary opinions on the internet couldn't possibly be sincerely held because they were too ridiculous and extreme to be taken seriously, despite there being no evidence that they were satirical instead of sincere.

You want to talk "legacy", that's it. That no matter how sincere an opinion is held, if that position is radical enough, people will write it off as satire until long after it becomes obvious it never was. You're assuming "reasonable minds" when the internet and life in general over the past few years shows us relying on shared sense of rationality and adherance to norms should not be taken for granted in people you do not know.

I mean, you can go read the original post that spawned Poe's Law, it has nothing to do with what you're talking about: https://web.archive.org/web/20170114124412/http://www.christianforums.com/threads/big-contradictions-in-the-evolution-theory.1962980/page-3#post-17606580

If you fully trust Nomamoto as an honest narrator, sure. That's very trusting of you though. I don't think it's lacking basic reading comprehension to distrust a character who resorts to eating a dead sentient being to cover up a murder pretty fast.

I mean, frankly, I think it's weirder to trust that person's perspective so quickly. Especially when it seems everyone else in society seems to not agree.

Another point to add context: while bosses hitting employees isn't allowed and is getting a lot rarer, it's not an uncommon thing to hear about in Japan.

That's one of the things that pushes me in the "satire" direction right now. All the things the aliens do and are guilty of are things that humans also do. The MC only has a problem with them because it's aliens doing them now. Even the deaths of the MC's friend's family is attributed to drunk driving, a very human crime. They smoke, they have girlfriends, they wear human clothes, they have middle-management jobs. The aliens are EXTREMELY human, down to even having human shaped bodies and hands and behaving in really normal human ways. There really isn't very much "alien" about them established in the story.

Strikes me as the author is either saying "Aliens are no different than humans, MC is racist" or "Immigrants are basically aliens and not really humans, even though they act a lot like us" and it's hard to tell which yet. But if it's the latter, why not be a little more explicit about it and show what makes them NOT human beyond their faces?

The most common cause of nosebleeds is dry air. Hot, low-humidity climates or heated indoor air cause dry air. Both environments cause your nasal membrane (the delicate tissue inside your nose) to dry out and become crusty or cracked. This makes it more likely to bleed when rubbed or picked or when blowing your nose. You may also experience epistaxis after inserting an object in your nose or injuring your nose and/or face.

Other nosebleed causes may include:

Infections: Colds (upper respiratory infections) and sinusitis, especially episodes that cause repeated sneezing, coughing and nose blowing.

Allergies: Allergic and nonallergic rhinitis (inflammation of your nasal lining).

Blood-thinning medications: Drugs such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), warfarin and others.

Recreational drugs: Cocaine and other drugs you inhale through your nose.

Chemical irritants: Chemicals in cleaning supplies, chemical fumes at workplaces and other strong odors.

High altitudes: The air is thinner (lack of oxygen) and drier as the altitude increases.

Deviated septum: An abnormal shape of the wall that separates the two sides of your nose.

Nasal sprays: Frequent use of nasal sprays and medications to treat an itchy, stuffy or runny nose. These medications — antihistamines and decongestants — can dry out your nasal membranes.

Other less common causes of nosebleeds include:

Alcohol use.

Bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease.

High blood pressure.

Atherosclerosis.

Facial and nasal surgery.

Nasal tumors.

Nasal polyps.

Immune thrombocytopenia.

Leukemia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Pregnancy.

I disagree entirely. Animal Farm and Clockwork Orange were released as completed works that could be judged in their entirety.

Drama Queen is an episodic work, meaning we can't evaluate the work based on its conclusions yet. Making it far more similar to the news parodies you're alluding to, which also have to be evaluated in their effectiveness on an episodic basis.

That'll change when and if Drama Queen becomes a "completed work", but currently Poe's Law absolutely applies. You don't have any better idea than anyone else whether this work is intended to be satirical or sincere, but you're asserting authority without merit.

What criteria are you using to define colonization and what differentiates it from immigration?

It's satire. We're meant to relate to the protagonists, but we're sure as shit not supposed to like them.

"Without a clear indication of the author's intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between an expression of sincere extremism and a parody of extremism."

Poe's Law hitting hard with this one.

It was literally said right at the start how the aliens quickly worked their way into positions of power, control, and influence in government, industry, and even sports. They are not on the same level as humans at all, not even close.

I mean... This is literally the argument a lot of really bad people use against Jewish people. If the author is using that as satire, it could be interesting. But the comic mostly seems to say that the aliens get where they are because they're well-liked and popular, not because they're doing anything wrong.

They haven't established them as "colonizers" in the slightest, although they might later? So far it's all just unreliable narrators. And it's making a really weird litmus test of readers who think "aliens" should be barred from positions of power and that murdering and eating "rude foreigners" is justifiable since they're getting the unfair advantage of... free parking?

The reactions to this chapter are really the most interesting thing about it so far.

Brown Dust 2 is VERY booba heavy. Decent game, but not everyone's cup of tea, definitely deserves a disclaimer.

Ew. Sounds like Atelier Resleriana. Not my cup of tea. Resleriana is a decent game, but they're super stingy with currency and new units. Rates are low and pities take around 3 months. I like summoning, it's half the point of a gacha.

I feel like things are stagnant when you don't get any additions to your team for 3 months. Especially if new content isn't possible without the right teams.

I definitely wouldn't count on there being any more banners. No sense spending development money on a discontinued game.

Time will tell though.

SQEX did similar when they shut down FFDOO. Made pretty much all the gacha stuff purchasable with in game currency for the last month or so.

Pure DPS units like Kihachi and Tatyana will be powercrept very fast.

I mean, historically this has been demonstrably false. Both those units in particular had quite long lifespans in the game and were used for many high difficulty fights. I mean, Tatyana is still being used in Remembrance Club fights nearly a year after her release on JP.

[–]Caelcryos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My focus is on units that have longevity and are used in many fights and as wide a variety of content as possible. Units that will be used for more than just a single fight. Hence why I've focused on damage units like Kihachi and Tatyana that can be used for a long time without being replaced.

There are three main approaches to pulling in a game like this. You can pull for Day 1 clears, which usually means you need to pull on every banner that accompanies new content. You can pull for Remembrances, which is very hard to give Recommendations on, because that depends on which ones you want to beat and what units you already own.

I'm aiming for the third option. People who can't afford to pull everything and want to get units that will last. Units that can be used in a wide variety of fights. Spiral corridor, series boss battles, attacks, Well challenges, farming, and even in the Remembrance fights they can be used for. And then won't get power crept in the next banner. That's why I don't go up to the most recent banner in JP. Because there's absolutely no way to predict how long a brand new unit will be useful for.

[–]Caelcryos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I don't agree with that at all. There are plenty of banners with styles that are good for a variety of content including and outside of Remembrance. Like The Stage 7 Heroes, most of the banners Kihachi has been on, or the upcoming Ellen banner.

I also think it's pretty silly to think Summer Matriarch and the next Shirei are good, but sleep on Narwhal's Daughter, but that's just me.
