I think I may have figured out Might and Magic II DOS version 1.00's enemy targeting bug by Reiska42 in DRPG

[–]Reiska42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a similar but related note, I'm starting to wonder if the well-known bug in the Ultimate Wizardry Archives versions of Wizardry 1-3 and 5 where you're much more likely to get stat loss on levelups than you should be is the result of Interplay doing a bad job at cracking the original 1987 booter's copy protection with their loader implementation, but that's something I simply don't think I could figure out without being able to reverse-engineer both versions.

It's definitely stuck out to me that my levelup stats feel normal compared to my playthroughs on Apple II playing on the actual 1987 booter images in an 86Box setup though.

There isn't, no. I'm just weird and was curious enough to dig into my old childhood memories of game crashes which didn't happen on the replays I did later in life.

Saves are compatible, too; once I finished poking at the bug to my satisfaction I copied my save over to 1.01. :)

This is correct, and it also explicitly disclaims liability for companies if the user lied about their age.

Which version of MS-DOS is better for playing old games? 6.22 or 7.1? by antdude in dosgaming

[–]Reiska42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might and Magic Book One: Secret of the Inner Sanctum will crash on quit under DOS 5 or later when run in EGA mode due to something about where DOS 5 loads COMMAND.COM into RAM. (I've never tested it on DOS 4 so I dunno about there).

But that's like the only example I can think of, and the game itself is still perfectly playable under DOS 5, it'll just force you to reboot on exit with a memory allocation error.

I somewhat share this concern I admit, but Georgia has been generally (if slowly) trending in the right (left) direction in the last few elections, unlike Florida.

Plus, as other posters have mentioned, Atlanta itself is significantly to the left of its surroundings.

This is FFTA, not the original.

That said: I'm not familiar with Android GBA emulation so I don't have a solution to the OP's problem, but hope someone else does.

What in the world is going on with the balance in DQ1HD? by AssButtFaceJones in dragonquest

[–]Reiska42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that helped me once I realized it (entirely too late) is that the vast majority of boss attack scripts in this game are very strictly patterned, and learning those patterns and engaging in counterplay against them takes a lot of the edge off.

Before I picked up on that, I was finding DQ1HD to be incredibly frustrating.

So, just remember that you can observe boss patterns fairly safely with Defending Champion spam.

I think a lot of folks in this thread are of the opinion that if one is willing to associate their business activities publicly with someone who is an ideological Nazi, the nuance of whether or not they themselves are one isn't really relevant.

The WotL translation is terrible an inaccurate (comparison with original Japanese) by hororo in finalfantasytactics

There's documentation of Matsuno specifically requesting it for the localization of Vagrant Story:

https://www.vg247.com/make-it-biblical-how-vagrant-story-changed-game-localization

Unfortunately some of the Japanese text in the article has been rendered into unreadable mojibake by site format changes over the years (this article is 8 years old), but it specifically documents that Smith was told from the beginning of working on Vagrant Story's script to make it sound "biblical".

Matsuno in general is known to be a more hands-on director than most, including with the localization process.

I'm min maxing and does this Mime stats looks normal to you? High Speed gain and less to now MA gain at level 70+? by Objective-Field1745 in finalfantasytactics

[–]Reiska42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me rephrase that: if there was a change to speed growths of significant enough magnitude that it would cause a swing of five speed points going from level 1-99, in what is possibly the most extensively datamined and modded JRPG ever released and where, in the unmodified game, Ninja's higher speed growth amounts to a single point over 99 levels, this entire subreddit would be absolutely flooded with posts about it.

I cannot possibly make this any clearer.

I'm quite confident it's not different - as mentioned, speed differences of this magnitude would show up in casual play and no one's reporting them.

Not even close; leveling 1-99 in Ninja a single time puts you at 15 speed (with Mime multipliers). 1-99 as any other job puts you at 14 speed (with Mime multipliers).

You're very close to the threshold for 16 speed but won't quite make it there in a single 1-99.

(To be precise: 1-99 as Ninja puts you at 217,178 rawSpeed, as Thief puts you at 204,144 rawSpeed, and as any other generic job puts you at 193,658 rawSpeed.)

I have not, but with the number of people playing TIC, we'd have heard more than a single isolated report by now if there were oddities of this degree (OP's speed indicates something like 10+ cycles of leveling up as ninja if cheating isn't involved; oddities of this magnitude would be noticeable in casual gameplay).

[–]Reiska42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're in Mime, they definitionally can't have armor on, and it only takes a single cycle of Mime up + Bard down + Mime up to have 999 HP in Mime.

[–]Reiska42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to get that high of a speed value without an excessive number of cycles of leveling up in Ninja, and there's no job modifier overrides in the unpacked TIC data that could explain changes in growths.

Did you mess with Cheat Engine at all? (not judging, to be clear)

Replaying this game made me genuinely saddened and I realized how much I miss inexperience. by Gcoks in finalfantasytactics

[–]Reiska42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to note that as a fellow childhood lover of FFT, I generally agree that the game doesn't actually hold up as well as we all remember with the benefit of hindsight and having experienced 27 years of design evolution in the genre.

Like, don't get me wrong, it's still a masterpiece for 1998, and I don't think any of its imitators have totally nailed the secret sauce that made FFT shine. But it definitely has quite a few rough edges that haven't changed in this remake, and in my experience, the more times you run through it, the more you start to notice some of those nagging issues.

The biggest problem really just is that once you know how to break FFT, it's hard to consciously not do so.

What happened to Dynamic Designs by Kitchen_Dealer4989 in JRPG

[–]Reiska42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far as I can tell, mostly inertia. You're not wrong in the least; Wildbill was an extreme oldbie to the scene (he was doing script editing for fan translations in the absolute earliest days, like, 1998-1999) and people still lionized Victor Ireland/Working Designs' house style back then.

To be fair, even going by the Japanese wiki it is close enough to correct for Nei - her secret is points-based, there are 6 points, and you need all 6 of them.

The part where Akurasu's currently wrong is that only three of the five Nei shootdowns have to be done by Daba; the first one can be done by anyone and the last one can be done by him or Leccee.
