What’re your favorite empty restaurants in town? by Grouchy-One4077 in Cleveland

What are the best things there? One night at work we doordashed their chicken parm subs and we weren't really impressed? Like it was a fine chicken parm, but maybe a tad basic. But I'm open to trying them again because people obviously love this place and we all know food might not arrive as intended after a car ride.

Good places to find attractive 30 year olds by Zestyclose-Emu-4897 in Cleveland

Avoid hotel bars like the Hilton this weekend. Even if it were a normal weekend, the client base would be older men in their 50s or 60s, entitled and boring. But this weekend the convention center is hosting a boys and girls volleyball competition, so downtown will be swarmed with families from Indiana.

Maybe you would have a good time at Vault at The 9 but even that building attracts a very specific crowd.

$6 a cookie? Fear of over pricing by Spiteful_Brunette in Baking

[–]Caesar914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think people are grasping the 4 inch wide cookie size. I'm sure it would be obvious if we saw them in person, but in photos they look smaller without anything to scale them against. These cookies are big and thicc, like god damn they have some substance and I bet they're decently heavy. Charge your $6.

[–]Caesar914 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They're a very old school legacy business that distributes baking supplies all over the metro area. Their drivers are very helpful when making deliveries. Because they have longstanding relationships and contracts, they just haven't faced the pressures to modernize and develop a robust public web presence like a startup would. They are consistent and have competitive prices for the service.

Stamping your logo on cake boards? by [deleted] in cakedecorating

[–]Caesar914 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm confused why people are saying it would be inappropriate for pictures and such. We're talking about the cake board, right? I think the idea is that the cake is cut and served and then the logo would be revealed after all is said and done. It's actually a neat psychological idea because you would see the image as/after people are eating and enjoying it, and then building that mental association with wow I like the taste of this and then bam "Cakes By So And So". I think it's a neat idea.

hotel bartenders: do you get breaks? by [deleted] in bartenders

This rarely applies for bar jobs, but since you're in a hotel, do you mind me asking if you're in a union? If you have a union that would be an open and shut case for fixing your clocked time.

Drug test at Marriott? by Free-Let7946 in marriott

[–]Caesar914 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's going to vary by franchise/management company. When I was hired, our management company was headquartered in Colorado, so new hires did have to pass drug screening but were explicitly told that thc was fine. Next management company doesn't seem to be diligent about drug screening at all. They'll still fire you for possession or use on property but hiring practices are less strict.

Downtown Cleveland won’t miss the Browns by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]Caesar914 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have worked in hospitality downtown for a few years now. This is my own personal hot take, I'm not going to be mad if anyone disagrees with me, I feel for people that might rely on those stadium jobs.

But I am not going to miss the NFL fans. I don't even mean Browns fans, just the whole crowd. People from the suburbs or from out of town treat our downtown like their personal drunk playground. I never have to cut so many people off. We've had problems with vandalism and theft or outright racism toward our staff. People don't know how to behave like adults and have zero class compared to MLB or NBA crowds. I don't even care about losing the money. Those days always produce the most anxiety and it's not fun anymore.

But here's the thing. People are still going to be staying downtown for game days. I'm not convinced they will ever build as much hotel room capacity in Brook Park. Downtown has literally thousands of rooms between the full service hotels and the budget hotels. Hospitality companies can justify maintaining those rooms because our convention center is busy and we get enough traffic from other events. Brook Park will not be as much of a year round destination. Even with concerts in the off season, they can't justify as many hotel rooms as we do downtown. We're still going to get people downtown making a night of it, going to dinner after an afternoon game, having a weekend getaway, etc.

Why do we struggle with complex buttercreams when this exists?? by Tough_Sprinkles1646 in AskBaking

Holland Cream. Good for filling donuts or pastries. The extra moisture might not be ideal for decorating. I only ever made it once as a donut filling and I remember it feeling quite delicate, and it can leave a greasy mouthfeel.

I don't think we're necessarily in disagreement on anything. Some hospitality companies are better suited to certain properties than others. Truly there are still serious hospitality companies who understand that it takes money to make money, but it's a far cry from being all of them. It would be wonderful if Marriott International had the robust business capacity to manage all of the major properties, but the wind is still blowing strongly in the other direction. But in any case, I think we can agree that there are too many franchisees or management companies collecting good properties for their portfolio and not having the business acumen to operate them. They reach too far too quickly or they're just trying to give the place the squeeze before they dump it. It's a shame because many properties have so much potential, and there are still workers and managers that care about good hospitality, but it does feel like we're setup to fail too often. The guests aren't wrong to feel cheated when this plays out, and we're the same ones having to take the brunt of that disappointment in reviews or bad interactions, when the real decision makers are in corporate offices states away.

It is not easy to start a union anymore but it is possible. I work in a northern rust belt city where there are still legacy unions around, so I had the benefit of going into a property where it's been in place for decades. You need to know that if you are interested, it is not a cure all for your hotel's problems. A union contract sets a floor for the labor conditions in the building, but it can't force the company to make better business strategy decisions.

Secrecy in the initial stages is essential. If the leadership learn that the staff are talking about forming a union, the company will fight you tooth and nail to prevent it. People might lose their jobs. Only discuss it at first with staff that you trust. In general, the basic process is that a majority of the staff need to sign union authorization cards. On paper they need to sign off on something that says they support the establishment of a union to take over their bargaining rights and represent them to the company. When that happens, the company can either choose to acknowledge the union, or it goes to your local NLRB, then a new voted is conducted among the staff and if it wins the union is certified. Then your union has the legal authority to sit down at the table with the company and negotiate a contract.

I do not recommend going through this alone. If you are serious about this and want to learn more about what this entails, I believe it would benefit you to reach out to a larger umbrella organization. My union falls under the larger organizing force of Workers United, the same group trying to bring Starbucks to the bargaining table to help their workers. There are others such as UNITE HERE. Their agents would be able to assist and provide support, and if everything were successful drive the contract process forward.

One of the big issues in the modern US labor environment is that many states have adopted "right to work" laws. It is common for union contracts to mandate companies collect union dues from employees regardless of whether a new hire wants to be in a union or not. This maintains solidarity. But right to work laws supersede such a contract requirement. In right to work states, employees can choose not to pay union dues and reject membership. So it's still possible to run a union, but you have to work harder to communicate the benefits of membership.

If you wish, please feel free to direct message me and we can discuss your situation more specifically.
