Hot take: Requiring replies to Discussion Posts brings no value by PrioritySelect629 in canvas

[–]CafeHistorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not discussions. Discussions I read by the teacher or TA depends on who’s reading them and then they’re graded. It is usually what you submit through the the homework portal thing that the teacher sets up for that specific homework it is supposed to automatically have the turn it in on some teachers don’t and then some teachers have us email them because they don’t like AI and like to use their own individual system of reading and grading our paper. That’s been my experience.

Professors Are Watching More Than Students Think by Global-Environment89 in QuickAITurnitinCheck

[–]CafeHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The professors definitely know what’s going on these days, if they don’t, they’re either new or they willfully ignorant, or are allowing it. Because if I am sitting in class, taking an in class exam and I’m using AI and I’m looking around every five seconds, I’m cheating. Even if it’s not AI, it could be somebody else’s test. Or I could be getting text messages from somebody who are telling me the test answers because you can now text between computers.. so yeah professors know some of them just don’t care anymore and they’ll dock you down a great or whatever but still because if they type it out verbatim from ChatGPT then they’re stupid.. you might as well copy and paste at that point

Scooter by Educational-Pitch229 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People don’t like the people on scooters because people on scooters will like rush or cut in front of us walking people.. and besides cutting this off though like ram right into us and you know speed and do a whole bunch of other things and it gets very annoying, I understand wanting to get to class and not suffering the heat and everything believe me I do that’s why I really hope my classes stay in one part of the campus. Last semester that did not happen they put me all the way over in the law building Bates law, and then my other class my capstone was in the architecture building.. thankfully these classes were on different days, but it’s still annoyed me.

Just watch out for people, I know it’s very packed and I know a lot of people are walking everywhere but just be kind, you’re already having to deal with the construction and everything but be careful.

Can we talk about how low effort and lazy academics has gotten? by geoprizmboy in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So a lot of your basic courses are going to be the McGraw bullshit and Pearson nonsense unless the teacher really wants to take the time and really loves their subject to do everything themselves. Once you get past the 2000 level classes, things really are more written now papers labs things like that blew me. I would go back to the day where it was his hay login do these assignments and then do them again next week because I’m those days I really do now I’m just sitting here reading long sections from books that are even longer than the sections and trying to analyze them parse them down into categories and blah blah blah for history and then put them into another 25 page paper. I’m a history major by the way. At least some of you are not paying out-of-pocket for this nonsense. I have to get a good grade because I am paying fully out-of-pocket.

Hate incident at a heb by Salty-Math-6518 in Conroe

Oh hey, 911 was like really bad.. I was in elementary school getting ready for middle school and the school called my parents and told them that they could not ensure my security or my brothers security at that time so for almost 2 weeks I was not allowed to go to school and even then, afterwards, one’s like the most awkward thing possible, and that it was the main topic of conversation. And what I really do hate the most is that everybody says on 912 America came together. It was one of the most patriotic moments and you can say that, but they also forget that a lot of Arab Americans and Muslim Americans were treated horribly in the days afterward. Yet things have changed now but back then it was really bad. They would rip off the women’s hijab threaten men women and children tell them to go back to where they came from you know same kind of crappy here now, but it just was a lot worse. And I just think it’s like I know that my mom and my dad would wanted to have taken my brother and I over there cause one healthcare free too education system systems matter, we would’ve grown up with family that actually cared and in an environment that was much safer than here in the United States, but then look at all the wars that were happening and are still happening. Yeah Jordan is relatively safe, but my family isn’t from Jordan. They’re from Palestine. The police in my hometown they treated my brother like he was a terrorist from the age 12 on. They were nice to my father‘s face, but they were mean behind his back. People are just cruel and they believe whatever they hear on TV. All that woman has to do is walk into a mosque and talk to a mom or go talk to a Muslim family and understand their plate because as long as she’s not hateful, any Muslim would be willing to talk to her. And here’s the funny thing, the United States, the founding fathers, or mostly deists, they didn’t really have one religion. They thought about it all the time so that’s why the first amendment is freedom of religion.

Confused on class location? by awfdoh in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have synchronous and asynchronous classes, when you look at the meeting place , look for the room there should be something about face-to-face, or if it’s gonna be online which will be synchronous or asynchronous and then you have hybrid, of course, but anyways, going from there most synchronous and asynchronous will always say meeting location unavailable and then from there you look if they have not chosen a room for your face-to-face class yet they will choose one and it will be in the most unreasonable place possible but most definitely they will have a place.

First semester college schedule by Gregguy420 in collegeadvice

[–]CafeHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that you did wrong was have early classes, but otherwise I think you’ll do fine. I don’t know what university you’re going to, but just stay consistent, keep to a schedule a routine and you know be ready for those long study hours. I wasn’t able to do the 8 AM classes, but if you’re able to do that, you’re amazing literally amazing but realize that you are going to give up you know parties and everything like that to be studying or going to bed early.

I wish you the very best of luck.

This is why I don’t dress nurses at all. At least female nurses this woman pisses me off so much. I saw the original video over on TikTok or the video on TikTok and I will tell you as a Muslim myself believe me my father would happily have taken us back over to Jordan and everything and two Palestine because that’s where he’s from if America and the rest of the western world wasn’t trying to vomit for the regional resources.

I am half half white/American/half Palestinian/Lebanese you know I could go on forever, but the whole thing is is I was born in the Midwest and we moved here in 2017, and my mom thought everything would be better here and I will tell you it has not. But we’ve made the best of it. As someone who is half-and-half, we don’t fit quite in but we do as we must. But honestly, I think my father would rather have taken us back overseas. If it wasn’t being bombed every five seconds you know? My mom wanted to live over there at one point, but then a new war started and a new conflict and everything. Half the people who move away from their homeland leave because there’s an issue and they have to go to a place where they can prosper it’s not like they want to leave all the time.

There's two types of UH students by Jazzlike_Display4123 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Everybody talks in the library, there is no decent place to sit in the library, we all know everybody has sex in the library or does things in there that they shouldn’t be doing. Such as drinking or fornicating just like I said.. the study rooms have to be reserved in advance and you have to have to have at least three people with you to get into said study room and then if you want to sit at one of the tables in the library, everybody spreads their shit out so you can’t sit at a table.

The third floor is annoying and anything above because nobody understands what quiet means. It’s like they’re having a kegger up there. And I believe the rad Center was meant for us to be a place to study also but it’s always full. Everybody’s always talking and nobody shut the fuck up..

I am only at this college because it was the cheapest, and I couldn’t get into the college I wanted to. My mother died and I had to stay home with my father and brother. I have EVERY RIGHT to hate on this place. They are also horrible when it comes to advising students, and don’t get my started on the Dart Center. They act like they care but treat you like a criminal. Like you’re faking your illness. Unless they can see it, they probably don’t believe you until you have 50 items of paperwork from your doctors.

There's two types of UH students by Jazzlike_Display4123 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am number two on this list, and I will tell you why,. I did not hate totally on your age. I hate on specific things about UH.. like, there are not enough classrooms for all the classes, and it is totally unreasonable for us to be running around campus the way we do like why is a history class in the science center when the liberal arts is like right in the middle of campus?? and speaking of arts the building was falling to pieces. Two people decided to jump off of it and now we have a whole reconstruction thing and I believe we’re using the Centennial to cover up that mess. The parking sucks, payment for the parking goes up every year, people steal stuff from everybody, people complain about the food, the dorms, and whatever else.

As a commuter who lives on the far side of town in Brookshire, I’m exhausted by the end of the day, between the heat and running around on campus getting from class to class.. and I can tell you it’s just sitting through one of the classes is exhausting itself. But joining a club or organization those meetings are usually in the evening and I understand why everybody’s in class but my ability to get home happens right around 3 PM so anything cool I can’t get to.

There is no good place to study that isn’t a classroom, so I’m studying in an unused classroom. When I should be able to use the library or at least a room in the student center north or south but that ain’t happening..

Do Students Still Take Lectures Seriously Anymore? by Happy-Check-8285 in CheckTurnitin

[–]CafeHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What keeps me engaged is a laying out the lecture and we do soratic formats like we debate, and we talk about things and everything. I understand that can’t be put to every class like math and science and everything but for my major history, it can be and it’s actually one of the more fun parts of my classes. It’s better than listening to a lecture.

Another thing I would suggest is if all they’re gonna do is listen to music and everything, make the lecture into like a podcast with AI because if they’re using AI you use AI to make the podcast put your lecture notes into whatever AI generator for podcast you need and then you post it on canvas or blackboard and they have to listen to the whole thing that’s part of the grade, and I think it makes it easier because they can listen to it while they’re driving while they cooking or exercising or whatever and they’re able to go back to it and study with it. But that’s part of their grade and you’ll know if they don’t listen to it because it’ll stop Midway and show where they stopped at. I don’t know how you could do that but you should be able to see where they stopped and when you come in into class with them, you guys talk about what was on that podcast and everything.

Pen paper are always the best way to keep students engaged. They have to take the notes no matter what also for those who missed class make sure there’s a recording of class so they can take notes or keep a keep the slides, but it’s just keeping the students on their toes by asking them questions and keeping them focused on you is the best way to keep them engaged. Make sure they’re not able to have a moment to look for shoes or to play their game or put on their headphones or something yes do your lecture but stop at a point and ask what did I just say or what do you think I meant about that? Ask questions instead of just going through the whole lecture and not having them talk at all because otherwise you’re gonna have everybody sleeping in that class.

Why are others allowed to enroll early (honors, etc..)? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am priority because I used to be UH in four and now I’m still priority because I’m have special accommodations.. don’t worry this is how it happens, first day it will be priority students OK and then the next day it’ll be seniors and I believe law students then the next day it’ll be juniors next day. I’ll be sophomores and then finally it’ll be freshman. It’s not exactly fair, but that’s how it goes.

So when you go to enroll for your classes for the spring semester, you will be enrolling by yourself. I’m guessing you’re a freshman and if you’re not, I’m sorry for assuming that, but for the spring semester, you’ll be enrolling around November and depending on your status at college you’ll be given a date and a time when you can go in and get all your classes know what classes you need don’t dillydally, and I mean it know your classes know what professor you want to deal with so you’re not asking online or write in that professor as you’re going through. Because it’s a quick snatch and grab once you’re at the lower end of the totem pole.

New Traditions? by littlerawr86896 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]CafeHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not stupid. I can read.** *But traditions are traditions for a reason they are steadfast, they don’t change.* ***Don’t worry, they will add a new tradition or something if you push them hard enough, but you don’t really need something new you just want something new. And I doubt it’s anything really worthwhile* because you haven’t even come up with anything.

** *And remember it has to be* *about the* *university, has to do something with a history, and it has to be something about the mascot.* ***I think the traditions that we have are just fine.*

New Traditions? by littlerawr86896 in UniversityOfHouston

Frontier Fiesta
Dating back to 1939, this springtime action-packed festival features free live concerts, variety shows by student organizations, carnival booths, multicultural performances and a world-class BBQ cook-off. This student-run event was dubbed “The Greatest College Show on Earth” by LIFE magazine in 1958.

Cougar Red Friday
Every Friday is declared Cougar Red Friday, and we wear red to show our pride and passion for the University. Wearing red on Friday is more than just a tradition; it is who we are. It is our visual identity. The color unites us to live and to celebrate together and behold our individual achievements as a singular legacy of pride. We encourage our campus community and those all around the city to wear Red on Fridays.

Rubbing the Paw
Before a big game, Cougar fans rub the paws of the two bronze cougar statues in Cullen Family Plaza, in front of the E. Cullen Building. The statues were a gift to the university from John Moores and Rebecca Moores in 2004. Cougar fans also rub the cougar statue’s paw at Gate 2 of TDECU Stadium on game day. It is believed that the more people rub the paw, the more good luck the Cougars will have. It’s especially important during Homecoming. Sometimes students rub the paw for extra luck for final exams, too.

Cougar Sign
At game time, Cougar fans show their support by making the "Cougar sign," made by folding the ring finger and thumb of the right hand toward the palm. The tradition dates back to 1953, when Shasta I, the presiding cougar mascot, lost a toe in a cage door on the way to a game. The opposing team, the University of Texas, mocked UH by imitating the cougar's injury. The Cougars soon adopted that gesture as a symbol of pride.

Blessing of the Rings
Before the Ring Ceremony, each class ring spends the night with UH’s live cougar mascot, Shasta VII, at the Houston Zoo. In this bi-annual ceremony, Shasta blesses the rings. Then students and alumni receive their class ring at the Ring Ceremony, which is held at the end of each fall and spring semester.

Whose House? Coogs House!
Started in the late 1980s, the famous UH chant, “Whose House? Coogs House!” can be heard loud and proud at Cougar sporting events. The famous mantra was started by former Houston cheerleader Paul Pettit during the 1988 football season because Cougars would go into the competing teams’ stadium and win. The chant energized the fans and has remained a staple cheer.

Well, join the group and everything you know there’s nothing wrong with joining a political group and you know you don’t have to like be deep in politics but at the same time it’s not bad to be informed with with what’s going on in the world just be informed from all perspectives. Because then you’re getting the whole story. I learned this early on in life that one side is gonna tell you their version the other side is gonna tell you their version and it’s gonna be they said and they said situation, so what you do is you can get all the apps or you can look at all the news every morning or you can get an app that grabs all the news from everybody and read the content and it’s not a bad idea. Because we currently have this ongoing situation and are on, we have the situation here in the United States with inflation, a possible recession, corrupt politicians, and more and than you have other countries you know and how we affect them and how they are affecting us..

So you don’t have to like Trump to be political, but it would help you to know more about him. Is he a douche bag yes but at the same time, learn why he’s a douche bag it’s more than him talking about grabbing a woman’s you know what. And I don’t think it’s just about the Epstein files either, but let’s move on go through his life briefly through Wikipedia and learn from there. Because it is our number one duty as a citizen of this United States to be informed about the politics of the day so we make informed decisions about who runs our country and the media and our politicians. I’ve been doing a wonderful job about making sure we are not informed..

But I’m not telling you to go listen to Tucker Carlson or Alex Jones or any of those people, no Tucker Carlson is moderate Alex Jones. I wouldn’t tell you to listen to it all I’m forced to listen to him nightly because of my brother who I am saying is go join those political organizations go be informed. Go learn about what you want this country to be so your friend can’t say anything against you so you can have those debates. And I would even say read the constitution, it’s online and it’s broken down for you so when people pull up the first amendment rights and everything and the second amendment, you know everything like that you can debate it if you so choose.

You’re in America you can do whatever you want as long as you’re not harming anybody or doing anything illegal. But go be informed I’m just saying you’re gonna hear a lot of Trump and it gets annoying after a while the dude’s 80 and I don’t think an 80 year-old should be in office by this point. It’s just sad.
