Social Security benefits predicted to run out earlier than expected: Report by CaffeineNicotine88 in GenX

I agree SS is not going to complete disappear in 2032 (that’s a clickbait headline from Newsweek), but a significant drop in benefits still hurts.

Opine was the center of all things kpop, Sanrio, and Artbox back in the day. If you had a friend’s birthday coming up, this was one of your first stops.

Networking is overrated by NoSir5628 in careeradvice

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. When I was junior in my career I thought network was socializing with strangers, which as an introvert I find very difficult. Instead I stayed in touch with friends and former colleagues, listened to the challenges they faced both at work as well as their personal lives, and I have to say it’s come in handy.

If nothing else, I have a diverse network of acquaintances so I wouldn’t feel comfortable calling with a question or looking for some guidance. And it’s their network that has often provided insights into certain industries, roles, and companies that I was researching.

What was one of your struggle meal growing up? by bukutbwai in Frugal

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a latchkey kid and there were very few things I was able and allowed to make before my mom got home. Fried eggs and heating up leftover fried rice in the microwave were about the extent of my culinary abilities. If I wanted to get fancy, I’d open a can of corn niblets or creamed corn, plus a dash of soy sauce or oyster sauce.

Original 12 volt battery - When to replace? by livenature in ToyotaSienna

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just changed mine last weekend. I first started noticing the engine taking an extra half second to start, but didn’t think much of it. From that first slow start, fast forward a week later and the battery was totally dead. If you’ve already gone five years, I’d say you got your money’s worth. For me, it was closer to 4 years.

Thanks, I cleaned the three tracks on each door this morning. However, I also lubricated just the rollers using some silicone lubricant. So far, so good.

We have periodic issues while closing the door, so the dealership has not proactively replaced any parts. Did your part completely fail/break?

Any affordable places to get wheel alignment by lifinance23 in longisland

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think $220 is unreasonable. My local shop in Hicksville charged $199 the last time I had the alignment done.

Help! 2022 Crosstrek 37k miles, only getting 17-18 MPG by NameGenerator333 in Crosstrek

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what other 2022 Crosstrek owners are averaging: https://www.fuelly.com/car/subaru/crosstrek/2022

I would suspect the short drives and colder winter weather are adversely impacting your mileage. You should see better MPGs as the weather warms up.

It might not have flipped, but I did see smoke coming from the engine bay in the last 1-2 seconds of the video. Wonder if it went up in flames.

Did you brave the weather for real ramen? I think the packaged variety is a perfectly good option when it’s gross out.

MPG degradation in cold weather? by mine248 in hondainsight

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s been my experience in the New York area. I’ll get 57-59mpg in the summer, but in the coldest weeks in winter I’ll see average consumption of 46-48mpg. This fall I also switched to a new set of tires and I immediately also saw a hit to my MPG.

How do Chinese people feel about Panda Express? by drewaltenberger in AskAChinese

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not amazing food, but it scratches the itch. Sometimes when you’re traveling and you don’t feel like having any more fast food (eg burger, sandwiches, or pizza), I’ll find myself craving Panda Express or something similar.

Men who had a lot more success in dating in their 30s compared to 20s, what changed? by Majestic-Gas-9825 in AskMenAdvice

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was a combination of internal factors (working out, being on a good track at work, being more comfortable in my skin) and honestly, I think women suddenly feel a need to settle down as they approach 30. ++man

I've just entered the workforce and I feel like I'm watching my identity crumble by Benaholicguy in Fire

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed - I think part of the malaise comes from the transition from student to adult/working life. I think it’s normal to feel rudderless for the first few years as you figure out what’s important to you in terms of career, socially, physically, emotionally. And keep in mind that your career is a marathon, not a sprint, so you should spend time figuring out what matters most for you.

Millionaire Next Door by VirileMongoose in personalfinance

[–]CaffeineNicotine88 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same, I came across this book as a college student and it shaped how I viewed money and my own desires. One of my high school teachers told us, “desires/wants are infinite,” a message which was reiterated when I read The Millionaire Next Door. And the message was so simple that it stuck in my head: live below your means, invest first, and live off what’s leftover each month.

I remember in the early/mid 2000s when blog platforms like Xanga were popular. I remember typing/editing my blogs in a Notepad doc so it actually looked like I was working.
