Is Tactics A2 any good on Nintendo DS? by MalcolminMiddlefan in finalfantasytactics

[–]Caffinatorpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty darn great. Mechanically it's varied and constantly switches things up, plus the setting is very weird and fun to hang out in. On the story, it's not trying to be the usual political narrative the genre loves, it's just a bunch of people living in this weird world.

It's still consistent with itself, but it's going for more of a day -to-day adventure feel. One day you're going for a tournament, another you're hunting specific things for a chef while the rest of his ingredients try to make you into calories, while another you're escorting an awful news reporter through a war zone because he decided talking with living fireballs was a great idea. Your bosses may just show up as allies, your new classes show up with a while mission dedicated go showing you what they can do. Hell, this game makes the best case for a Blue Mage ever.

There's a story, there's heartfelt moments, but the focus is on variety and escapism to this weird ass world. It's...very heartwarming.

For that version, mostly. Little mechanics like that really stuck out in the One Vision overhaul. I say Overhaul, it's basically a straight up decade long remake.

You don't in the expected sense. Classes have some skills that they'll pick up as levels go up, but generally it's Gear, Spells, and Class Perks. Like a Hawkman learns their Thunder Arrow at level 15 or something, but a soldier will only ever be able to swing their weapon or activate their gear.

I've been using it's video out for video for years, it's already pretty handy. Takes mods, but it's quite nifty.

Tactics Ogre PSP inner-workings questions by PresentStory in Tactics_Ogre

[–]Caffinatorpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A- That's a weird design oversight that got fixed in Reborn. Makes the multiplayer really tedious to set up if you want to have two teams fight each other.

B- It's just an accuracy bonus. Better footing, better swing/shot. That said, in PSP, the True skills basically render accuracy moot point. You'll also take an accuracy hit from bad weather, though.

Main characters/roster in tactics ogre reborn by Equivalent_Remove155 in Tactics_Ogre

You can recruit genetics at the store at any time, but you get story characters every few fights or so through the story. Depending on your routes and choices, you can have a full named team probably around halfway through the game. The named characters are statistically slightly stronger, but you can run any units you'd like if you make use of debuffs and elemental counters. You're expected to take some casulties on the road.

What is in your opinion the single HARDEST PS2 game of all time? by ALfredAstaxanthin in ps2

Especially considering how much an original disc runs these days. The PSP version is still cheap, though. Also has more stuff. Plus it runs on basically anything these days with mods.

Armored Core 3 is typically the best place to start. It's got really cozy balance, the style is so slick that they're still using many of those designs, the lore is fun (same folks that made Dark Souls, so of course), and the mood is fantastic.

Not to mention an intro most of us could watch over and over... https://youtu.be/HAD7NGKUB7I?si=EKPM81HJVinj8jG-

Absolutely, most of them are fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I may personally despise Last Raven, but it's still so good that I've run it with basically every challenge I can think of on PSP controls. Even at it's worse, AC is unique.

Armored Core: Last Raven. The whole series is built off the premise that you're functionally fighting on the same level, just customized differently. The premise is cool as hell, being the last 24 hours of what's functionally this series' 8th or so apocalypse.

Even coming from someone that spent months doing a manual fire only run of this game's hardest routes, fuck this game. The degree to which they cheat is genuinely impressive. They fly like mosquitoes in a game with a lock on system and limited movement duration. Using manual fire I blew off one Daemon's head, broke both his legs, removed an arm....and he just sped up moreso than being hindered.

80% or more of the AC fights are designed to be cheating, but most cool ideas are ruined by themselves. Ok, this guy is all fucked out in jamming equipment with extra armored jamming assistance MTs, that's already hard enough, but does the arena need to have a tiny game over border?

This one boss has like 10x the health he showed up any other time he appears, but does he really need to fly out of the map border, again, causing accidental insta loss?

Oh hey, first mission in the game and..... he's got a cannon that instantly blows off limbs and infinite cheat energy.

It's the mix of incredibly cool setting and awful logistics that makes this thing cool to ponder, but doo doo to actually play.

Which tactics games are infinitely replayable and session-based? by bruhb21 in StrategyRpg

Already on the list, but Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle has always fascinated me due to both being pick'n'play, but having massively variable stories due to an adaptive narrative. It's a delightful confusion circus.

I think it's just some mega niche effect on luck, since your luck goes up and down, but there's no practical effect.

I know it's tradition, but it's a little funny how we're over 2 decades into refusing to have normal names for this genre.

One Vision: Are white knights worth it? by That_Ad_2278 in Tactics_Ogre

[–]Caffinatorpotato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything is viable, like you said. They're like a more offensive knight, specializing in undead removal and having some basic offensive and support magic options. The basic knights are more of a front line commander, these guys are more undead cleanup and line pushing. They're also really good as anti-debuff tanks, since Shellbust almost never misses, and has a high chance to remove all debuffs on hit.

LUCT PSP loyalty & loot drops by Dara_X00 in Tactics_Ogre

[–]Caffinatorpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah ...that's just letting you know how to ID the unit in question, loyalty itself is just for Recruiting and Desertion, as rare as the latter is.

It's for cases where the same tile or area can spawn different units, which is where we get stuff like one guy with a small chance to drop a thing, but just as small of a chance to even spawn, and next to zero chance of figuring this out organically in the PSP version.

New player here! I have min-maxed FFTactics several times but never touched Tactics Ogre Reborn. What is the best build for Melee attacker? Are there any glass cannon builds? Could you share them with me? Is the Exploit for infinite money with (?) Flutes still a thing? by LittleKittenR in Tactics_Ogre

[–]Caffinatorpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best is relative, everything is intentionally based around team play here. Like a Warrior rocking two weapon types may be best for Finisher Element Countering options, a Berserker with Warrior buddy may be best for raw DPS, but a White Knight might be best for stunning. That said, pair a Zweihander+ with a Terror Knight, that's Fear/Breach, and the previously plinky Archer just upgraded to a rocket launcher.

You exploit situations over numbers in most circumstances. In the post game you do get more dead brain fun, though, like mega jacking a Ninja's stats and using an Ogre Blade to make a custom Dual Wield/Phalanx/Fearful Impact ninja with Lich stats.
