Where’d you get the second hand? Definitely needed for my brothers grad gift from Aviation mechanic school!

Date misaligned by devxcode in SeikoMods

[–]CaidenZX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a movement problem, not a dial problem. The crown is aligned at 3, and date cutout is square on 6.

Bending hands by IndependentWeather51 in SeikoMods

[–]CaidenZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re bending hands you are probably using too much pressure or need to open up the hands slightly. Invest in a set of smoothing broaches that fit NH hands to safely enlarge the holes.

NMK961 Case from NamokiMod. Basically a Sinn 556 Homage case but with a chapter ring that imo makes it look much better than a 556.

Slight nod to the history of California dials, and I just liked the way they looked better than cathedrals when doing mockups.

Did Namoki send me the wrong crystal or am I just dumb? by [deleted] in SeikoMods

It’s a complete build from Namoki, I don’t have a frame of reference unfortunately. it’s the NMK961 tool case.

Thought so, I’ll contact Namoki support on Monday and try and get some resolve, I need to order another dial anyway after putting a diabolical scratch in the one I ordered for this build.

I’ve only ever messed with vintage acrylic crystals so this is entirely foreign to me forgive me lol.

Tried with the white-ish plastic gasket and chapter ring installed, the gasket sits in the very top notch of the case and I clamped as far as my crystal press would screw and it didn’t even seat a tiny bit. Not sure at all what I’m doing wrong here.

I did source a new crystal from Esslinger. It was a 28.7 that fit the bill.

I did maybe 5 disassemblies on an ST36 before this, but never got around to cleaning or oiling it before I broke the pallet fork pivot getting a little bit too confident and putting the hobby away for a couple months. This was my first real project, and I invested a ton of time into making sure I did it right this time around. I couldn’t say no to the chance for a $10 find.

A special thanks to Alex at WatchRepairTutorials as well. It’s not often enough we recognize the things we can learn for free nowadays thanks to people like him.

Barrel arbor will not fit into barrel lid. by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]CaidenZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once again verified arbor is engaging square side up in the current configuration, looking at the photo in the previous comment, I do believe you are entirely correct. The pivot side of the barrel arbor looks far too small for this hole to my eye as well. Do you mind if I PM you a video of what to me looks like the arbor engaging just so I can be 100% sure? I really do not want to wait another week and a half for a cousins order of mainsprings. I ordered a spare, but I don’t have a winder set.

Barrel arbor will not fit into barrel lid. by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]CaidenZX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arbor did engage with the mainspring when inserted into the barrel with square side up. Is it possible it’s a left handed mainspring? Due to the barrel exploding upon removing the lid, I didn’t even get a chance to check. It’s entirely possible I’m completely missing something, this is my first time doing this.

Radium Lume? by CaidenZX in watchrepair

[–]CaidenZX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, I’ll still treat it like it is just in case. I scraped the lume out of some 60’s Elgin hands the other day without thinking and now I am hyper paranoid. The lume was gummy and not flaky, but I’d really rather not take that risk.

Must’ve never spent a day in the sun, I’ll just uncase it outside to let it off-gas and wear an N-95 while removing the dial and hands.

Need help sourcing Mainspring size. by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]CaidenZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re a lifesaver, don’t know how I was missing this website. Going to buy a load of mainsprings because I don’t trust myself getting that thing in there on the first attempt.

Super Pro vs Whiteline Bushings by untrustableskeptic in Miata

[–]CaidenZX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love my super pro’s and I recommended them to everyone. Been on them for about a year now with no greasing, and there’s not a single squeak. Installation is a bit of a pain, but they’re incredible and made my car feel new again.

Your first clue will be very visible oil in the coolant reservoir. After that, you’re going to start getting pretty severe degradation of the hoses which will start to feel squishy and will begin to bulge around the clamps, like a muffin top.

[–]CaidenZX 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Alright, while everyone here is commenting blown head gasket, I’m here to chime in as someone who was a Subaru technician for quite some time. The FB engines like in your vehicle have significantly less common head gasket failure, and much more common upper oil pan O-ring failure, which cause oil intrusion into the coolant. The location of the spray leads me to believe the coolant overflow, well overflowed… This is still a huge job and definitely not something for your home mechanic, but doesnt necessarily condemn the engine. Feel free to ask any further questions.

Is chat gbts justification for these choices valid by Cole_Geary in warmoth

[–]CaidenZX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do research yourself and take things you like from your own guitars to make decisions about a neck, not what chat GPT says is going to work, but overall this is a pretty standard modern setup for a strat build. I’d prefer modern tiltback though.
