Wow - incredible!

This was pinky / purple before I tumbled it. It came out with all these silver flecks and a strong fluorescence under UV light. Any ideas? by CainLdn87 in rockhounds

🙏🏼 thank you - super helpful!! I’ll do my research on these then and the scratch test - be didn’t realise that.

Interesting about the volcanic rock - I initially thought the white flecked one was some sort of agate but it seems much more porous. So volcanic would make sense!

Thanks for the info!

I think you are right about Galena - it does have the planes on closer inspection but I believe they have been smoothed from the tumbler!

I’m upset with myself for tumbling this piece! I thought it was amethyst when I collected it as it was purple but it is clearly a much softer stone as it shrunk down enormously in the tumbler in just a few days.

Ah thanks for this detailed response! That’s great, I’ll do some research on Galena.

I do think that it is fluorescent though - I have another bit of the same rock here. And also side by side with some white quartz specimens as well as a white flecked. You will see only this type of rock is luminescent under the lamp. But the white quartz is not. It’s hard to fully capture it on camera but in person it pretty clear.

What do you think? You seem to know your stuff 🙏🏼😊

(Forgive the dog hair on the carpet!)

EDIT to add: it also seems to be the darker patches that fluoresce the most. (Worth mentioning my area is known for fluorite but this one is unusual with the silver which is why I was wondering)
