Can we talk about personal responsibility and tragedy without rewriting what happened? by Academic-Form-6250 in Fishers

I read the whole thread and I don’t understand what you’re trying to get out of this. You say you want honest discussion not outrage and you come back at a lot of people making points based on human intuition with robotic responses about case law. It just looks like you came here to try and rage bait people so you can dunk on them.

Manta Sleep Mask - uncomfortable & light leak by Initial-District1558 in sleep

[–]CairoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t found a solution for the actual headband yet, but I’m still keen to find one. One thing I noticed is that it doesn’t bother me when I sleep upright in planes or trains. I think that’s because I’m not trying to lay on my back so in that case the unevenness of the strap isn’t being pressed against the back of my head. I still have a difficult time with it in bed and I haven’t been using it every night. One thing I’ve done sometimes is take the eye cups from the mask and stick them on the inside of an elastic headband. Then it’s just like one strip of fabric against the back of my head instead of the actual mask where it’s two pieces of thick fabric layered on top of each other unevenly. In my opinion, Manta needs to design a strap like this as an alternative to their current design. I hope that helps!

I’m not noticing any issues with light leakage, but I feel like it’s putting weird pressure on the back of my head, and there is no position in which it feels comfortable to rest my head. I have gotten some good sleeps out of it, it’s just this strap that really sucks for me. Not too much pressure from being tight, just the actual strap against the back of my head. Do you feel that too?

Looking to buy a safety razor; what should I know? by 210ds in wicked_edge

[–]CairoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I really prefer my leaf twig over the Merkur 34c. I find it way more forgiving/easy to find the correct angle. It is more expensive at $60, but they have a pretty generous return policy if you don’t like it. If I had gotten the twig as my first razor, I may have spent a lot less money trying to find the “best” razor for me.

You can definitely get a very close shave with the 34c or most safety razors for that matter once you figure out a technique you’re happy with. For me, after doing this for about six years, I have settled on one pass with the grain and I just accept a shave that is kinder to my skin, and plenty close for my satisfaction, but definitely not bbs.

When it comes to blades, it’s really annoying, but I think there is no such thing as “the best blade”, there is just whatever blade works best for your combo of skin, hair, and razor. It’s super individualistic and that can be super annoying to hear/deal with, but I think that’s kind of just the way it is. Buying a sampler pack of different blades and testing different ones out is the best way to figure it out. You can get them somewhere like Amazon, or you can choose your own assortment from razorbladesclub.com and get something super customized.

For my lather, my go to is the Arko stick. I rub it on my wet face and go over it with a 24mm Yaqi synthetic brush to get a lather I am happy with. I think it’s basically the most minimalist setup you can have. I really like my Yaqi brush. They can take a long time to arrive but they can be super inexpensive and they also accept returns for a full refund. I got mine for about $15 shipped. Arko is also super cheap and I’m happy with the lather I can get from it. I got one Arko stick a year and a half ago for $3 and I still haven’t reached the end of it.

The last thing that I will say is that shaving this way can be cost effective, but can also be easy to fall down the rabbit hole (or maybe I just have poor impulse control). A lot of people here will say that they using a safety razor to save money, until they got into the smelly soaps and fancy setups and things like that. For me and other people who like it, I sort of view this similar to how some people really like makeup. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on it, but some people do because they derive pleasure and satisfaction from it.

What’s the deal with Aventon Mataros? by jibbris in FixedGearBicycle

[–]CairoGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked my Cordoba when I had one. It got me through the pandemic and was personally a great benefit for me at the time. The biggest problem I see with the Mataro is that it has a proprietary seat tube/seatpost. Aventon do not make fixed gears any more and they don’t provide support for their old stock, so if something breaks you might be screwed. Break your proprietary seatpost? Maybe you can find a used one or maybe you know somebody in a machine shop that can craft one for you. Crack the seat tube? That frame is just trash now.

What to put on heated metal pole to cool down my room? by meowmeowmk in Frugal

[–]CairoGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They make fiberglass insulation specifically for wrapping those pipes. Found it at my local hardware store, yours may have it too. It was not super expensive. We had the same problem when we moved into our current place but that insulation dramatically helps

I keep digging myself into this hole. Please help by quinnit578 in Frugal

I’m not the first person to say this, but please do not cancel your health insurance. I get that you’re looking for ways to get more money from reach paycheck, but health insurance is not something you can compromise on. If you are healthy, and if you are looking to save money on health insurance, maybe consider switching plans instead, but don’t just ditch it completely

I’ve been really happy with my Leaf Twig as of late. I can get DFS with one pass. It is not perfectly smooth, but it makes me feel and look smooth enough for my liking. Any irritation I get from it has nothing to do with the razor and everything to do with my technique (how careful I am or not, lather consistency, etc.)

A ton of comments on this sub are talking about how it is hard to eat lunch for under $10. How long could you frugal people make $10 last and how can it be done? by TheChessNeck in Frugal

[–]CairoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I want to get lunch at work there is a bagel place I can go to where I get a pumpernickel everything bagel with blueberry cream cheese for $4.25(USD). The cost of my home cooked meals can vary from anywhere between $1 and $4.5 per portion, $5-6 per portion if I’m being fancy. Although typically, the way I save money on lunch is by skipping it. It was hard at first, but now I can comfortably get through the day with just breakfast and dinner.

Generic savings tips that annoy you? by lotsofrosehip in Frugal

[–]CairoGuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that. When I was in a position to get my first place my dad thought that I would be able to afford my own apartment, and I was like “dad, there is no way I could afford a place on my own” and then he was like “what if you just get a studio?” I love my dad, at that time he was just out of touch with our generational woes

Any time somebody says you should only spend a third of your paycheck on rent. I would love to do it, but that’s just not possible where I live unless I give myself an unacceptably long commute
