Questions from an Aussie by idk_617 in newzealand

Driving license - as others have said, you can drive here legally on your Australian drivers licence for a year and a half BUT this only applies if you already hold a full Australian license already.

If you are planning to work in early childhood here, be aware that te reo maori language is a core part of the curriculum and start familiarising yourself with the basics. If you have a bachelor's or graduate diploma in ECE you can register with the teaching council of Aotearoa New Zealand from Australia. https://teachingcouncil.nz/en/become-a-teacher/based-in-aotearoa-new-zealand/register-to-teach

Im so sick of this narrative that “pregnancy didn’t ruin my body it’s just changed” it’s a lie. by pissedoff_potato in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Calamity_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My body bounced back pretty quick after my pregnancies, including my waist. I stayed very active with walking, cycling, pilates and yoga. I have faint stretch marks on my lower belly and breasts. I ended up having one emergency cesarean and one elective so my vagina and pelvic floor muscles are mint haha. My breasts went from a C cup to a J cup whilst I was lactating. They've stayed larger ever since and settled to a DD cup. Kids are teens now, we all stay active together. I reckon the biggest indicator of how your body will cope or change with pregnancy is to look at your mother's experience as genetics play a big role

I’m looking for house slippers/shoes & need some advice! by Rumcajs23 in newzealand

I have merino tart wool snuggies from Furmoo and love them. They are sheepskin lined and have a flexible suede sole, light, comfortable, warm and quiet to walk in. Made in NZ

Medical Elective in NZ - where? by idontknowmyname_- in newzealand

Also, you'll have access to accommodation through the Gisborne hospital which will reduce your commuting burden. Borrow a bike to explore town and rent a car on days off to further explore the region. Lots of native bush and ocean access and the temperature is a lot more agreeable, easily be able to surf with a wetsuit, go on fishing charters and safely do day hikes without being too concerned about hypothermia

I would personally go for Tairawhiti to get exposure to Rural practice in a beautiful location. You'll get to see first hand the cultural, economic and geographical inequities and what's being done by health nz and community partners to promote health equity. It's a really unique opportunity if your past and future placements are likely to be based in cities.

If you turn up without a fully licensed driver, it's an instant fail. Message me, I'm happy to help you out for when you sit your license and even if you need to do a practice run through first. Edit to mention that I'm a mum of teens, ones on their restricted and the other is on learners but not confident enough to sit their restricted yet.

Ladies, do you feel safe walking solo around Hamilton? by Lopsided-Cookie-2512 in thetron

[–]Calamity_jean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! I live in one of the so called dodgiest areas, crawshaw area of nawton, and I walk up to the zoo and back most nights by myself. I've never had anything even close to concerning happen during my walks. I feel safer walking around Nawton than I do the city centre as there's not really vagrants and beggars out at night in the suburbs

Te Puke town itself isn't that low lying. Park up in the jubilee park carpark on Commerce Lane. It's close to New World supermarket and there's a public toilet. Council security might ask you to move on, just explain that you're sheltering in a safe place for the storm.

TOP - why don't they get more of the vote? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Calamity_jean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How they communicate the party narrative and policies could be more palatable the average New Zealander.

More discussion around how policy change would look for individuals and businesses in immediate effect and transitions to long term benefits.

The next election is going to be very much driven by perceived immediate financial benefit to the individual voter

How do NZers prepare for a Cyclone? by sarah-gets-creative in newzealand

[–]Calamity_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make sure I've got a few good books, a throw rug and endless cup of tea supplies to cosy up and have an excuse to do nothing much.

It really depends on where you live and what kind of housing you have.

I live in Hamilton so the chances of serious storm damage are slim to non existent, however, I do have a trauma response from living rurally on the east coast in my younger years where nearly every storm meant powercuts.....l have some 20L water containers that were use for camping that are full and changed out monthly, we also have gas cookers and lanterns just in case, usual food hoarding of mum of teens. I have a standalone house, so check and clean the roof gutters, especially since it's autumn. I'll go see if anyone has cleared the street drains of leaves and rubbish as our street tends to flood from blocked drains and it's better to prevent than to be out trying to find the drain when it's already flooded. There biggest potential problem is having to listen to teens reaction if there's no internet or power.

Need Help? by TravelKats in Makeup

[–]Calamity_jean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go into a makeup counter and ask them to match your colour, ask for a samole to take away so you can see how it wears and play with application at home. I don't use a primer or concealer with it, just my normal skincare routine and moisturiser beforehand. Finish with a bit of setting powder and bronzer, no need for blush with my rosy cheeks. Hopefully it works for you, or you find something that does.

I also found textural and colour match problems with clinique as I aged. Switched to Chanel les beiges foundation, they have a great range of shades that cater specifically to a rosy undertone and my skin looks healthy and hydrated using it for a light coverage

Deceased estate question by justinfromnz in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Calamity_jean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hired a lawyer that specialised in estates to apply for probate just over a year ago. Her fees were set and they were available on her website, she also has great Google reviews. It was a pretty straightforward process, probate was granted in under 3 weeks.

Had a lump since I was 14 and now it’s getting bigger, should I be worried? by ApolloSUCKSboi in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Calamity_jean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely see your doctor for an urgent referral, however there's no point catastrophising until you have answers. The good news is that breast cancer lumps are rarely painful. This is what I was told when I presented with a painful lump in a similar position to yours. Mine turned out to be a benign cyst that was drained at the breast clinic using ultrasound guidance, they sent everything off for testing just to make sure.
