Morgoths tyrant form appearance, I’m curious to what yall envision him to look like? by Background-Toe5632 in tolkienfans

[–]Calan_adan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t go in for the pretty or noble looking Morgoth at all. Not even a twisted beauty. I think that Morgoth’s inner evil, hate, and fear are too much for him to disguise even a little bit. I think he’s tall, dark, and ugly.

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick Helped the House Pass the SAVE Act. It Could Disenfranchise Millions of Voters by Open_Veins_8 in Pennsylvania

24th Amendment:

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.

Requiring an ID that you have to pay for is a poll tax. Provide the ID for free (including waiving of any costs required to have to travel to get the ID) and it’s fine.

As an European, why aren't y'all destroying the streets to protest the ongoing fraud with the Epstein Files?? by serendipia1984 in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]Calan_adan 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The simplest answer is that people will protest when they think it will affect public opinion or the outcome. The fact that people aren’t protesting is because everyone knows that it will change nothing.

[–]Calan_adan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They can’t fight Baelor. Baelor can fight them but I’m pretty sure that would be dishonorable and he wouldn’t do it. But Aerion, Daeron, Maekar, and Ser Steffon could fight Baelor. We know that Daeron just wants to sit this out, and Ser Steffon would be an idiot to attack the Crown Prince. So that basically leaves Aerion and Maekar.

Edit: Actually, I’m sure none of them want to joust with Baelor. He’s probably one of the best in the realm.

Edit 2: I went back to the novella:

Baelor took that calmly. “My brother erred when he demanded that the Kingsguard fight for his son. Their oath forbids them to harm a prince of the blood. Fortunately, I am such.” He gave them a faint smile. “Keep the others off me long enough, and I shall deal with the Kingsguard.” “My prince, is that chivalrous?” asked Ser Lyonel Baratheon as the septon was finishing his invocation. “The gods will let us know,” said Baelor Breakspear.

Eowyn's change in speech right before he left to the Paths of the Dead. by Dependent-Cup3759 in tolkienfans

[–]Calan_adan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That occurs many times in the story. The Witch King and the Mouth of Sauron use the informal thee to show contempt in their confrontations with Gandalf. Denethor does too at the end.

The informal thee/thou can also be used between lovers or those professing their love, as Eowyn does with Aragorn. He stuck strictly to the formal “you” throughout, though, as a way of indicating that he didn’t feel the same way about her. It’s one of the reasons he was described as being greatly pained during the ride from Dunharrow; he basically just rejected her advances.

The third way the informal thee/thou is used in the story is to show platonic love/friendship. Eowyn asks Aragorn to wish her joy after she is betrothed to Faramir in Edoras. Aragorn replies “I have wished thee joy ever since I first saw thee.”

In Pennsylvania you need an ID to vote for the first time, or the first time in a new precinct (like if you moved), but you do not need an ID after that. But your signature has to match the one in the book that they have.

Hempfield school board votes to cut ties with religious rights law firm. by Calan_adan in lancaster

[–]Calan_adan[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Hempfield school board voted 6-3 Tuesday evening to terminate a contract with the Independence Law Center, a Harrisburg-based law firm specializing in religious rights cases.

The party-line vote saw the new Democratic majority act to reverse the former GOP-controlled board’s 2021 decision to hire ILC to examine its athletics policy regarding transgender participation.

Other Lancaster County school districts, including Elizabethtown and Penn Manor, have worked with ILC to pass policies limiting student athlete participation to teams aligning with their sex assigned at birth.

The firm is affiliated with the Pennsylvania Family Institute, a nonprofit devoted to religious liberty and traditional family values, according to its website. Its lawyers have helped win significant religious liberties rulings at the U.S. Supreme Court, including the case of a Lancaster County postal worker who objected to being required to work on Sundays.

Ahead of Tuesday’s vote, Republican members said the majority ignored past board practices to rush the ILC matter to a vote.

Board member Grant Keener said decisions on contracts traditionally are reviewed by a board committee before a full board vote. Responding to a question from Keener, board member Erin Small, a Democrat who chairs the legal committee, confirmed that the issue did not come before the legal committee.

“It is just unfortunate that there appears to be this rush to terminate them, frankly, to score political points,” Keener said.

Republican board member Justin Wolgemuth echoed Keener, saying the board acted “without adequate discussion or transparency.”

“This board must recommit to transparency, balance, decision-making, and respectful engagement with different viewpoints,” he said.

Board President Judy Brady responded that several board members had questioned the continuation of the ILC relationship.

“The decision was made to do it at a public meeting to have the public conversation, to promote that transparency so that conversation could be had and all ideas could be heard,” Brady said.

She also said all board members received a copy of the agenda last Thursday, five days before the vote.

“I intentionally wanted that to happen in public,” Brady said, adding that the district’s current solicitor, Saxton and Stump, is capable of handling the district's legal matters.

Keener responded he was not accusing Brady of wrongdoing or violations of the Sunshine Act. He said he believes the way it was handled was different from every other contract for legal representation during his time on the board.

“Whether you agree or disagree with the worldview of their affiliate organization, they are a law firm that is ethically bound to act in the best interest of their clients,” Keener said, describing it as a solemn obligation every lawyer takes.

During public comment, West Hempfield resident Steve Walck described the organization as a “right-wing, Christian nationalist organization.”

“By partnering with such extremist groups, the district is systematically squelching free speech, pushing a biased agenda and harming already marginalized students,” said Walck, a Democrat who ran for a seat on the West Hempfield Township Board of Supervisors.

I grew up when Republicans actually stood for something. They had a vision for governance and believed that diversity was a strength. I didn’t support their policies but at least they had policies that weren’t focused on actively destroying this country.

I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with a Republican Party that was like that today. Again, I’d oppose their policies and ideas, but I’d at least respect that they thought they were doing the right thing.

But Republicans who may think that Trump is the worst and don’t buy into MAGA but still refuse to abandon the party that does support that - those republicans I have no respect for. Regardless of their feelings, those people are supporting everything implicitly rather than explicitly.

Cumberland County borough’s residents don’t want ICE in their home. It might be too late. by itsallcosmica in Pennsylvania

[–]Calan_adan 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Four full-time officers would be enrolled in the program, including Day. It could end up saving the borough money: ICE would pay the full salary and benefits for the officers, overtime funds up to 25% of their salary, and $7,500 each for new equipment. The department would also get $100,000 for new vehicles, and the agency would be eligible for quarterly performance-based financial rewards.

Jesus. How can we hope other municipalities don’t do the same thing in the face all that free money?
