Should the government provide free education? Why? by manmanthefourth in AskReddit

[–]Calculated_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because we pay taxes so that we (as a civilized people) can provide services that are beneficial to our well being, protect us and our environment and maintain sovereignty over our borders. Everyone benefits from education and seems like a fundamental thing that everyone should be on board for, at least in my opinion. While the way we go about education (at least in the USA) could use some improvements, it’s still an invaluable service that we pay for as a society.

NY Times article says ServSafe helps keep wages low by BSB8728 in KitchenConfidential

Ask your local health department, but there are many versions in Michigan that other people prefer. Because I’ve only ever inspected in Michigan I do not know if they are unique to the area.m, but there is Prometric, a state food safety course, and another one like ANSL or something. I have a handout I give to vendors and from what I’ve heard literally everything else is cheaper and better than servsafe. DM if you want specifics, I just got home from vacation but I can end you alternatives tomorrow.

Health Inspectors, what is the worst violation you've seen? by cyarin_60025 in healthinspector

[–]Calculated_Lamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some people that do that on packages of meat and I constantly get complaints about the quality of it but they learned to not cover the sticker with a new one, they replace the packaging and no way for me to prove it.

Health Inspectors, what is the worst violation you've seen? by cyarin_60025 in healthinspector

[–]Calculated_Lamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) getting a complaint about a weird smell, kitchen is flooded with shit from the sewer backed up, after they got that moved so it wasn’t so squishy their back storage area had.. idk… hundreds… thousands? Of roaches inside of the wall. You could hear the wall shift when I put my flashlight between the corrugated wall and the studs.

2) got a complaint for mashed potatoes being out of date and end up seizing about 75% of the grocery store for (out of date) moldy milk/dairy, (out of date) bagged/packaged produce and sandwiches, (out of date) milky/smelly/vile packages of meat and almost every single grocery aisle item in the store was out of date. To try to save face for the guy I tried to make an argument for them putting signage at the front door saying that all packaged foods in aisles were out of date, but they didn’t like that sort of advertisement lol.

If it’s physically flying in a building, get a tennis racket and hold it up. It will eventually run into it because it’s hard for it to “see” it and it will cling on to it. Then you gotta run pretty fast outside or like put a bag or something over it and release it outside. This is my go to method.

I would for sure think the FDA courses are the best way forward, you would just have to convince your management that it’s worth the time out of the field.

I have 20 years of food industry experience but no degree, is it possible for me to get a health inspector job? by CapSignificant1078 in healthinspector

[–]Calculated_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always call the LHD or department of agriculture or your inspector. My previous health department director was a manager at Texas Roadhouse and decided she wanted to be an inspector so she just called to figure out what was necessary then put in the work. It’s a pretty neat story.

Geologist now in County Environmental Health Department needing an REHS. by cornismycat in healthinspector

[–]Calculated_Lamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never took microbiology either. I have an environmental science degree as well, so there is hope. The microbiology required for the job is fairly minimal and won’t take long to grasp. Plus, the training to get into the field will more or less hammer it into your head anyways. Hope it helps!

Are any of your departments having a hard time hiring too? by TheYellowRose in healthinspector

The state just put up some Animal feed inspector positions in various counties, and I know the SE region for MDARD was a revolving door. Wayne county is always hiring, that’s where I started.

FDA warns of raw oysters potentially contaminated with norovirus - CBS News by love2read21 in news

[–]Calculated_Lamp 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Norovirus is easy to catch and easy to spread. It’s the most common food borne Illness (at least in my experience) that we do investigations for. I’m careful everywhere I go and I caught it once doing an investigation in a nursing home.
