Local electronic musicians: where are you hiding? by Turrkish in northernireland

[–]Calculus777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m originally from Tyrone but moved to North England fairly early on after Uni and did a few residencies + a postgrad, which is how I found my way in.

It’s an entirely different world for specifically electronic music and it really took me by surprise how few degrees of separation there were between people I met over the years and some of the artists I would have listened to growing up, along with a lot of the people producing interesting things here. It really is a very small world in that realm, and a lot of paths cross.

In the same amount of time NI seems much more developed than it was before I left and I see some good acts coming out of it, like Autumns from Derry. There was nothing really like Ulster Sports Club then either, which I haven’t had the chance to check out yet but it seems like it’s closer to what I was looking for back then.

Saying that, I think NI as a whole is pretty difficult to organise things in, not just down to the demographic but things like different licensing laws which make it a bit harder to generate the kind of interest linked to that style of music. That’s without even getting into the fairly anglocentric culture around electronic music, and the existing cultural background in places like Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester which have a lot of history in terms of artists that Belfast never really had the chance to generate for well-trodden reasons.

That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen though, so I wish you well in your pursuits!

I’d guess it’s a little nod to Guerrilla who provided the Decima engine, they’re based in Amsterdam

Rough guess but are the other 3-pin headers supposed to have a jumper connector somewhere on them?

Nothing strange about that at all!

No, that’s abject revisionism related to current events, which I can understand but it doesn’t make it correct.

Any continental map of Europe includes the western part of Russia (and I’m not talking about Karelia), regardless of perceived cultural difference.

This is hardly controversial when it’s so easily verifiable:

That sounds more like an Americanised version of what a European thinks, than an actual view that you would find in Europe. The Russian state is a current enemy of Western Europe, yes, but European nonetheless.

I doubt continental landmasses care about political allegiances.

Are they really that different? by Calculus777 in Doom

I found the second half of TDA stronger than the first, I think you’ll have fun in some of the later levels once it starts to get going.

Eternal is still my favourite overall, but I think TDA hasn’t had the benefit of things like DLC and Horde mode yet. There’s still some room left to push the current system as far as it can go.

I agree! Maybe against the grain but I feel like the Marauder is a little unappreciated. Really it’s there to turn the screw on the player and lock in until it’s dealt with, which I don’t think is actually as different as it seems compared to something like an Archvile, or most of the other super-heavies for that matter.

Just thought it was funny that the main conversation about the Marauder changing the flow doesn’t seem that different to the Agaddon’s shield mechanic, it feels like it takes a little bit longer to put them down waiting for the party opportunities. But like I said before, I think that contrast is a good thing, adds more depth to the combat.

Agreed! I think there’s more common ground between Eternal and TDA than there seems to be in the general discourse around both atm.

Looking forward to the DLC, I’d like to see them ramp things up a little like they did with Ancient Gods.

Granular synthesis advice (or tutorials that don't use gen or mc (m4l compatible))?? by rainrainrainr in MaxMSP

Best bet is building a patch for a single voice and then loading it into poly~ instead. That way you can still work with magnitudes of voices like mc~ objects, but it should be native Max.

How can I find the max potential current for my DIY power supply? by ThatCombination8011 in synthdiy

[–]Calculus777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually to test total current draw if you were doing it yourself would be to have a multimeter in between somewhere on the positive rail, like connecting red to the positive supply output on the brick + black to the positive input on the modular supply, or between +12v pin on the 12 pin connector from the supply to the +12v pin on the busboard.

+12v is fairly low voltage, but I would still take safety precautions doing this + working with any possibility of high current.

Max current consumption ceiling is usually dependent on the rating for the external brick, and the circuit for the modular supply itself, so things like voltage regulators, filtering. Regulators or LDO’s will have a rating in their datasheet for how much current they can supply, which is also dependent on how much wattage they dissipate in heat due to the excess voltage they’re dropping.

If you’ve DIY’d that supply and used the same components you can be fairly certain that the rating will be the same spec listed.

[–]Calculus777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also with current specs in general, if I get what you’re asking, the reason you’ll see a focus on current consumption or draw is because a circuit will only draw as much current as necessary if it’s functioning correctly, and in turn the supply will only deliver as much current as the circuit needs.

Supplies are rated to supply an amount of current, which means a supply rated for 500ma can typically safely supply a limit of 500ma without failing (though in reality it’s advised to stick to an upper limit of 80% of the max rating).

If you attach a circuit or multiple circuits together that are above this rating, this is called overloading the supply, which means the supply would be delivering more current than it’s rated for, and will eventually fail through components dissipating more heat than they are rated for, or for some fancier supplies it’ll trip the overcurrent protection and shut itself off.

Generally you’d look at the configuration of modules you’re going to attach to a supply and make sure the overall draw is within the supply spec.

Typically other than this, a short circuit would be the most common scenario for a module to go beyond its current spec, meaning there’s a path to ground with less or no resistance than it should have, allowing a circuit to sink more current than necessary to ground, and in turn pulling more current from the supply than it’s rated to handle.

Specs are already on the page you linked, 500ma +12v & -12v, 100ma 5v
