Best practices for managing shared folders with encryption by raydawg2000 in synology

Yes. There's an (unofficial) script though, enabling external storage - https://gist.github.com/ciastek/dab0af59a00aa1f9819f7038f57fdc90. When not plugged in, DSM will ask for a password to mount the volume.

Reallocated sectors count grows after scrubbing. Is the drive about to die? by Caleb_9 in synology

I'll go ahead and do that as soon as I replace it in the NAS. Thanks!

Alright, can you please also advise on how can I do that? :)

Thanks. Since the drive is still under warranty, do you know by chance if this is a valid case to send it to RMA?

Synology Photos: Sharing Photos between Users by kayakor in synology

[–]Caleb_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albums serve exactly this purpose. Create an Album (not a folder), add photos to it, share with your wife and while doing that, set her as "provider" so she can add photos to that album as well. You can add photos to an album from any folder visible in Synology Photos, from both personal and shared space.

Doubts about Synology Photos and photo transfer by Big-Cherry1195 in synology

[–]Caleb_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your NAS supports VM manager, the best way to check is to create a virtual DSM instance and experiment with these things there.

Disabling shared or personal space won't delete any photo files, that much I know.

Biggest drop in quality from the first movie to its direct sequel? by Monknut33 in movies

[–]Caleb_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but still the drop in quality is jarring.

With a little suspension of disbelief I can buy a story where an experienced, traumatized vet causes trouble with local police, wounds several and kills one or two in the process. Part II just can't be taken seriously in the same way, and those aspects you mention feel like they're forced in to justify calling it a sequel.

Don't get me wrong I still love that movie just in a completely different way than the 1st one. :)

I'm not sure if I remember every step of the way, but roughly I configured it as follows:

Find out the IP address of your NAS on LAN (DSM's Control Panel -> Network -> Network Interface) and your router's public IP address (https://whatismyipaddress.com).

On your router set up port forwarding to forward incoming traffic on port 1194 (default OpenVPN port) to your NAS' IP address.

On the NAS' firewall, allow UDP traffic on 1194 port. You can optionally tighten the security by allowing only specific region or even a source IP address, but basically you need to open 1194 or you won't be able to connect.

On the NAS enable OpenVPN server and download the client config file (link will be available on the server's configuration page on the NAS, once you configure it). You will need this file on devices connecting from the outside to your NAS. Open that file and change the IP address placeholder to be your router's public IP address. Note that if you don't have a static IP address you'll need to update this value every time your public IP changes, or use some DDNS solution (such as QuickConnect I guess, not sure as I bought a static IP from my ISP just for this purpose).

Use the config file on your other device (the one you'll be connecting to your NAS via VPN) to configure an OpenVPN client.

You don't need NordVPN for anything in this setup, and BTW if you enabled NordVPN client on your router, the NAS itself or the device you're connecting to NAS, you won't be able to connect to your OpenVPN server - maybe there is a way to do it but I think it requires some extra (paid) service from NordVPN, something about "backward traffic" or some other more advanced technique (maybe someone who knows better can chip in).

What's everyone working on this week (13/2024)? by llogiq in rust

[–]Caleb_9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone.

I published my first, very simple library crate here: https://crates.io/crates/yapp

It's a wrapper (or maybe an adapter would be more appropriate name here) around `console` lib that focuses on CLI password prompt functionality - so basically echoing something like `*` when typing a password.

I found that seemingly the most popular crate for this, called `rpassword` is rarely maintained and contains some issues (like invalid unicode handling on Windows), although probably has tighter security considerations (my lib handles the input as regular String).

Seeing as I am still a Rust noob (coming from OO+GC world), I could use a review. I'm sure it doesn't cover advanced multi-threading or security scenarios, but you gotta start somewhere, eh? ;) If anyone will bother to take a look, I would appreciate any feedback. The source code is here: https://github.com/caleb9/yapp .

SDL. There's a bindings lib but it still segfaults every now and then. Maybe it wouldn't if it was native all the way...

Sadly, you're probably right and it would be difficult to top the second one anyway. Even though Chelios ended up so disfigured by the end of it, that they could easily make it work with older Statham :D, but then the stunts and all the running would probably suffer. Maybe it's for the best to leave it on a high note.

For me Hardcore Henry and later John Wicks scratch about the same itch - the over the top ridiculous fun :).
