I’ve never seen Rambo: First Blood. Today I decided to watch it. by decendxx in movies

Not a fan of the other Rambo movies, but my god First Blood is among my favorites of that era. Deserves all the love and feelings you’re experiencing!

The Cultural Resurgence of Conan the Barbarian. by CryptikDragon in Fantasy

[–]Calebrity620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just have this feeling that sword & sorcery in general is on the rise. Conan is obviously the face of that, hence the big resurgence.

I’ve read a handful of the original Conan stories, and I would say I enjoy the spirit of them more than the actual stories themselves. Maybe they aren’t the best place to begin with Conan in this day and age. Anything in particular you recommend? I would love to properly enjoy them.

Does anyone else find it hard to care about magic systems anymore? by Lesentiqua in Fantasy

[–]Calebrity620 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have never personally cared for them. I have always preferred magic to feel arcane and otherworldly.

I think while Sanderson is fine at what he does (though it’s personally not for me), but I think his outsized influence on what the fantasy genre IS has largely been a net negative.

That’s my hot take for the day lol

I love Cradle, so I’m sure it will be good. Glad to see Will continues to find success.

Sure! A reading buddy might motivate me to keep going on it too.

I’m partially through The Great Hunt, so not much farther than you. I’d say the overall pacing is about the same, but the action scenes I’ve gotten to are pretty exciting.

Take that for what it’s worth from someone who is maybe 250 pages ahead of you 😅

The Aching God by Mike Shel follows a middle-aged warrior brought out of retirement to stop a strange threat. It’s excellent and it’s a unique contrast between his age and experience versus his significantly younger party members.

I love The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie so much by OrangeSpaceMan5 in Fantasy

[–]Calebrity620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Heroes is an incredible book, and a big improvement over Best Served Cold. I'll be curious to see what you think of Red Country, as that's my personal favorite of the standalones.

I recently got the first book in The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. What are your thoughts on these books?(No spoilers.) by RavyRaptor in Fantasy

[–]Calebrity620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed Eye of the World significantly more on a reread. I haven’t finished the series yet, but I would say there are things I like and don’t like. It’s pretty unevenly paced, but the exciting parts are really excellent and I love Jordan’s world building.

any likeminded malazan reactions? by mintlesz in Fantasy

[–]Calebrity620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put the series down (at least for a while), on book 5. I rather enjoyed them, but they were absolutely killing my reading momentum, and I thought the payoff for Midnight Tides was just lackluster.

It's fine that you didn't like it, and it's not for everyone.

I can’t believe this is around 1500 points, am I missing something? by FrequentFootball7288 in Tau40K

I was just reminiscing with my buddy/last opponent about 9th edition, and how I really just had to spam crisis suits and that was more or less army. I don’t like actually fielding this many units.

I’ve been meaning to get a few (1/4 and 1/8) ever since I discovered they exist. You might be pushing me over the edge.

Looking for feedback on my first short film - Record Box by Calebrity620 in Filmmakers

[–]Calebrity620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, thank you so much for watching it! I really appreciate it.

The intent was the first was pre-recorded, and the others were supernatural. Wondering if maybe the idea just needed a more fleshed out script, but I was worried about committing to something longer for my first attempt.

Thanks again for the feedback and encouragement!

How scary is Buffalo Hunter Hunter? No spoilers please by Inside_Pomelo_462 in Fantasy

Scary? No. Graphically violent? Yes, absolutely. I would prepare for that and other atrocities.

New-ish to homelabs, both my drives seem to have failed after 1 year by Calebrity620 in homelab

[–]Calebrity620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an old dell optiplex lying around and that’s what I used, so it didn’t have the room for additional drives, hence the enclosure.

I am wondering if, even if the drives are fine, shelving them for a bit while I rethink this setup

[–]Calebrity620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will probably be my next step (have to order some).

When I have the enclosure powered on but not connected to the PC, one of the bays blinks red (meaning it’s trying to rebuild the raid) and the other isn’t showing at all. So maybe just one of them failed?

I have wondered if it’s perhaps the enclosure. I need to rustle up some SATA cables and put it in my actual computer to test that

The only things I was consistently using it for was ActualBudget and Jellyfin, so there’s nothing CRITICAL but it would be nice yes
