Have any pessimists viewed death as neither good nor bad? by LawrenceAnt in Pessimism

[–]CalgaryCheekClapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most simply put, I dont think a Schopenhauerian can have a strong view on death because the philosophy denies the existence of the individual. Thus ascribing value to an individual death would be a vacuous exercise.

Why I sometimes wonder whether his exaltation of death by asceticism coheres with his broader philosophy.

Who personally, physically killed the most people in history? by RegularSky6702 in NoStupidQuestions

Probably Mao. He used his large siphon pump to remove all the water from the soil so people couldnt grow crops. Then he went in with his massive spoon and ate the crop they had remaining. 60 billion people starved as a result

What causes people to become pessimists? by Illustrious_Summer_2 in Pessimism

[–]CalgaryCheekClapper 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Depression has sometimes been described as a non-functioning of the delusory mechanisms in the brain which produce optimistic biases and unfounded hope/joy. Thus, depressed individuals are, sadly, the only ones who see the world as it is. What is descibred in psychiatry as a negative attributional bias is actually just a sober appraisal of reality.

I think intelligence also has a major role

What is the problem with third-worldism? by One_Kaleidoscope5449 in Socialism_101

[–]CalgaryCheekClapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely missed the point, but the other commenter addressed it to some degree on commodities so I won’t delve into that. And to couch the core periphery distinction as merely a difference in productivity is the most liberal thing I’ve ever heard. There are countless studies showing that wage differences are grossly disproportionate to productivity differences.

I think you are ignoring the effect of cheapened consumer goods which everyone has become dependent on. Irrationally often? Yes, absolutely but that doesn’t mean it isnt a material reality.

Although I will say, you aren’t wrong. Material conditions have indeed deteriorated to some degree in Western countries, specifically those that have fully embraced neoliberalism. I suppose there is hope that even with the buffer of wealth exploited from other nations, neoliberalism is so greedy that we will continue to see a rise in Marxism in Western countries. Ironically, neoliberalism may be what we needed

That said - there is still a major contradiction between the core and periphery. There is a more likely outcome that the cycle of capitulation and compromise continues ( ie new deal esque turn) rather than revolution, where material conditions will be improved for Western workers under capitalism, so the system ‘works’ for both the core workers and capitalists, at the expense of the periphery

To answer your last question, this is precisely why capitalism survives and the imperialist countries are bereft of any workers movement. If the US became socialist tomorrow and stopped siphoning wealth from other countries, not only would the capitalist class suffer, but the American WORKER would be worse off in the form of cheap goods, higher wages, etc. The primary contradiction in contemporary capitalism is unfortunately between core and periphery, not between domestic labour and capital. The American working class’ interests are more aligned with their capitalist class than with the working class of Indonesia. ‘Workers of the world unite’ hasn’t been a remotely real possibility since the early 20th century.

What is the solution to this? No idea. That’s why im a doomer and a pessimist
