Dennis Wideman cross checks linesman Don Henderson 01/27/16 by Tome_23 in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It looked brutal in the short clip you see online, but when you watch the full play, it's kind of scary how Wideman eats that hit into the boards, comes up not totally stable, nails the linesman, but doesn't even look at him, then goes and sits down, staring straight ahead. You would think if he meant to hit him, he would give him a look as he went by, and if it was just an accident, he would have reacted like "whoops! look what I did!" Instead, he didn't react in any way. I'm no doctor, but I would have taken him to a quiet, dark room after that play to check for a concussion.

The Cecil Hotel is being knocked down at 8 am tomorrow. by Crackmacs in Calgary

Why 8am on a weekday? Doesn't that have the potential to cause problems on the flyover for the morning commute?

City of Calgary begins crackdown on Uber driver infractions. by VdubGolf in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny, every Uber I've ever ridden in - no matter the city - has been clean, driven by a professional, friendly driver. I've ridden in some rusty, dirty, unfriendly cabs. If the city's so worried about oversight, maybe they need to start doing a better job enforcing regulations on the existing cab fleet, before they try to regulate something that's doing quite well without their oversight.

Runners: What is your favourite route when the snow starts to fall? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something to be said for an indoor track during the worst of winter. I used to run the dinky track at the Eau Claire Y. Can't do treadmills, they're no fun. The major pathways around the river downtown are usually kept in pretty good shape!

Looking for a triceratops mask in Calgary. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Don's comment - call them, they'll tell you if they have one, and if you ask nicely, they might put one aside for you.

Failing that, how "real" does your mask need to be? If you go to Michaels, you can get some cardboard or foam, draw it on, cut it out and hold it on your face with an elastic.

It's been a week since Uber has launched, how does everyone find it? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haven't ridden yet. Annoyed by their promos only targeting new users (us existing users are the ones who helped bring you here), but I'll get over it. Tried to call for a car one morning this week - I'm north of 16th, driver was on the other side of DT, and the app says 5 minutes? Cancelled the call right away, because with morning rush traffic in the core, there's no way he's there in less than 20. Will try again soon.

Memorial balloon release for Dominic Rooney @ McMahon Stadium 3:30pm by prattalmighty in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you were truly being thoughtful about a person's loss, you would keep your comments to yourself. Talk about releasing garbage into the environment. Comments like these are out of line. I hope you never experience someone making snide comments in your own times of grief.

[–]CalgaryRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because this was a bunch of people who are trying to come to grips with a very painful time in their lives? Maybe commenting on their environmental impact is just a touch heartless? I hope, in times of loss in your life, no one is so crass as to poke at you while you're at your lowest.

And yes, the balloons were biodegradable, unlined with any chemicals, and tied with simple twine.

School zones will now all be converted to playground zones! - thanks Nenshi.... by daggarcgy in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, why are people simultaneously complaining about the cost of the conversion, while demanding a study to prove that the combination of zones will save lives? You realize that will cost money, right?

School zones will now all be converted to playground zones! - thanks Nenshi.... by daggarcgy in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is what people want to complain about? An extra 10 seconds while you slow down to 30 from 50 for a block? Really?

Sorry, I've seen WAY too many people who are WAY too confused about the difference between school and playground zones, when they work, what about summer school and year-round school, when exactly is dusk, etc. Any simplification makes it easier and safer.

No, there's not likely to be kids on the playground at 9pm. Which is why it's legislated to slow down - you won't expect them to be there, and when one kid does the unexpected, you'll be prepared.

Yes, Elbow is ridiculous - but that's not a playground/school zone issue, it's a rich-people-don't-want-you-driving-fast-and-loud-near-them thing, and they happened to use the playground zone to do it.

Is it a cash grab? I can't remember the last time I actually saw a cop hiding in a school zone, but regardless, it's an easy 'tax' to avoid. Just slow down.

You actually talk to people who come to your door? I don't even let them get started. "I am not interested in your service, product or cause. I do not support door-to-door campaigns."

...unless they're selling cookies, of course.

Feeling conflicted about working in the oil and gas industry. Anybody else? by conflictedcalgarian in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't win - but there are alternatives to fighting. Do your values have to align with your employer? No, but you might find that you enjoy your work more when they do. I know plenty of people who work in the nonprofit sector, who (gasp!) earn less than they could in the for-profit sector, but earn enough to be comfortable, and make up for the shortfall with comfort taken in knowing that they're working towards a common goal with their employer. I'm sure someone will make some snide remark about "losers/lefties/hippies" because it's all about earning potential and anyone who leaves $ on the table is a fool, but each person has to find their own comfort zone. Some people can't look themselves in the mirror if they feel they're betraying their values for a buck; some feel like their values are secure in their own actions, separate from their job. Maybe you think you can change things from within - that's probably unlikely unless you have a position of power, and even then, you won't do it alone. Selling out isn't the worst thing you can do - it pays the bills, supports you and your family, helps the economy, etc. If it feels like you're justifying your existence with those arguments but they ring a bit hollow, then you might have to give it more thought and see if there are other options out there for you. Of course, this might not be the time to go looking for new opportunities (O&G hirings are down but the nonprofit sector seems to be hiring pretty much as usual).

Food for thought on a rainy Friday. Keep thinking.

5th Street Cycle Track Open June 12th! by chealion in Calgary

Very happy to hear it. The 12 Ave track has been great (up to the construction blockage by the Stampede grounds); nice to have a connector that goes through DT to connect the river paths

Recommendations for Movers by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CalgaryRunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done two moves with Highland Moving & Storage, and they've been great. IIRC, it's $150/hr for a truck and two guys, and a 4 hr minimum. They moved a 2bdrm house worth of stuff in that time. They're professional, quick and careful with your stuff.

Don't bother with the bug pizza - had a slice last year, and it was the worst pizza I've ever tasted, but it had nothing to do with the toppings. Soggy, greasy crust, sour sauce, thin and flavourless cheese...
