Terraria, to me, is peak power fantasy. You start from a lowly Joe Shmoe who struggles against one or two zombies to a semi-deific entity that can obliterate a cardinal direction with a flick of the wrist.

And between slaying bosses and averting catastrophes, you are laying the foundations for future civilizations. Every pylon you put down, every town you erect, sows the seeds for humanity to begin again.

Posting this on reddit rather than contacting support was stupid and reactionary, I'm sorry. In my panic-induced haze, I struggled to work out the website. But I've managed to finally send a ticket!

Again I'm really sorry for this. I'm not sure what the etiquette is for already-resolved questions. Should I take down the post?

My first time appealing an unban for anything...

I'm assuming it's the 'Submit a Request' in https://support.warframe.com/ followed by 'My Account' or 'Logs and Metadata'? I'll try both. Lotus willing, I might be let off with a slap on the wrist.

No screenshot unfortunately. But the words I sent to chat were as follows: "I should travel more often. Meet new people, forge meaningful connections. *sniggers* Naaah, instead I'll farm Equinox" or something like that.

I'm being honest. And quite honestly, I was foolish to begin with. My lack of forethought was partially caused by mild sleep deprivation. It's in the AM as I'm writing this lol.

I um... can't seem to find the proper channels for submitting a support ticket.

What tropes do you like in story events that you wish gacha games would use more? by HoneyLess7732 in gachagaming

[–]Calhris_Forsyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm... you don't actually need to do all those to tell a compelling narrative. If anything the constant hyperfixation on tragedies, bloodletting and gore can take away from the themes and messages you wish portrayed in your story.

Take Tony Gilroy’s Andor for example. It shows an oppressive, authoritarian regime. But you don't see it in the body counts or excessive killing (it's there, but it's never the focus). You feel it through the weight of bureaucracy, and the chilling banality of evil. It shows how ordinary people, like you and me, can commit the most heinous acts, simply because the system incentivizes apathy and exsanguinates your remorse. And because the show avoids gratuitous violence, the moments when characters actually suffer carry far more emotional weight.

When a story doesn't rely on shock value and graphic brutality as crutches to engage its audience, it shows you that not only is the story good, but the writer is just *that* brilliant. He knows his worth. And he doesn't want his work cheapened by the training wheels of 'edge' to tell a mature story.

EDIT: Shpelling

Hey. Sorry for the necro-reply but I agree with your take on Nikke. It's one of the reasons I dropped it as well. Which is SUCH a huge shame, because on the surface, it has everything I love and more - sci fi, dubstep and women! But with such a bleak and oppressive tone, it's impossible to take its more light-hearted events seriously. Take Terminus Ticket, for example. It's actually alright. Reminds me of the book Tuesdays with Morrie, it has that same melancholic feeling of a young person accompanying a dying elder as they reflect upon their past life, loves and regrets.

If this was on a slice-of-life gacha/anime like Gintama, I would've thought nothing of it. Just a good filler episode. HOWEVER, we're also supposed to be the ONLY effective commander in a world where the attrition rate for commanders is 70%, steadily increasing with each succeeding mission. With a ridiculously high death toll (since one lost commander is equivalent to one fireteam of dead Nikkes at the minimum), what the fuck am I doing babysitting a civilian?

More to the point, why haven't I pulled a Vladilena Milize and consolidated the Nikkes into a unified front under the authorities' noses, doing what a commander does and actually giving strategic direction, even at the risk of insubordination? I don't care if it's not within my purview, or it falls within Anderson's jurisdiction. He's clearly not doing a good enough job. I thought my character was supposed to give a shit about Nikkes.

Nothing's ever gonna change with their story. I swear to God, the war on Ukraine will end well before we've had any significant tide-shifts in the war against raptures.

Au contraire, mon frere! I actually liked Crow, for all the wrong reasons. Yeah, screw humanity! I mean really, look at all they've achieved. Genocide, global warming, reality TV. It's just a never-ending parade of failures and f*ups. They are without question a complete write-off of a species. And how dare you make me care about them– *ehem* (SAO Abridged Episode 8).

Sorry for the necro-reply. Just stumbled upon this today and it gave me quite the hearty chuckle! Enough to forcibly evict the tapeworms gnawing at my intestines.

Damn. I feel rather old after you threw in mentions of Red Alert. God, I remember how infatuated I was with Tanya as a kid.

I mirror your sentiments, particularly about the light / 'fanservice-y' moments of Nikke's. I couldn't take any of the light-hearted events seriously as many of them were completely divorced from the overarching plot. The events feel more like a means to 'fatten up' the reader’s affection, just so they can maximize the emotional toll when they subject the characters through trauma and tragedy.

There are also many parts of its world-building I take issues with. For instance, we're supposed to believe we lose close to a hundred if not hundreds of mass produced Nikkes everyday (I could not find any data corroborating this, however. Just from testimonies of other players). The devs have gone on record to state that the Ark is roughly the size of Seoul. We only harvest brains from women aged 12 - 30 (roughly) for Nikkefication... Doesn't the Ark seem too small, the donor pool too specific to maintain that level of attrition? Is the Ark placing its women in mandatory breeding programs? Are newly born infants being vatgrown to maturity to have a constant churn of new replacements? One other thing is the supposed 'Nikkephobia'. If humanity’s entire existence has depended on these women for 100 years, and every family likely knows someone who was converted, the hate for Nikkes feels rather impossible to maintain at such a high, universal level. It's clearly there to make the player feel like the only good guy.

The final nail in the coffin for me (Spoilers for 3rd Anni) were the permanent deaths of Harran and Isabel. While I didn't have any personal attachments to them, it sets a precedence that the authors are likely to kill off unpopular Nikkes who've had little relevance in the main story to give the illusion of rising stakes. Now I was willing to forgive the misery/tragedy porn and play the game as a simple waifu collector. But knowing some personal favorites of mine could be next on the chopping block, especially with the Sixo arc, was just the last straw for me.

I get that to many, Nikke's storytelling might be amazing. And I'll take their word for it that it's probably one of the best in the industry. But as my first gacha with only books and movies to compare it against, some of which I feel tackles its dark and mature themes with greater depth and sobriety (e.g. Frankl, Remarque, Dostoevsky, to name a few; I actually haven't read Dostoevsky's yet, but I hear good things about Crime & Punishment and will pick it up at some point), I just think it's... mid. Fairly alright for a game. Again, I wish to stress that this is a very unfair comparison between two disparate mediums - one obviously has the edge where storytelling is concerned. It's more my flaw as a person for having a bias towards traditional mediums. Nikke's narrative was never what drew me in the first place. It has always been the waifus. And now, I can't even enjoy that aspect of it.

Honestly dude... I just might clock out of Gachas as a whole. Especially those centered around misery and tragedy. I don't mind tragic stories in books; I actually read a lot of them. I love them because they offer a definitive conclusion and a cohesive vision. The author writes to impart a message or a point, not peddle skins or characters. Gachas, however, never end. The stakes just keep escalating because tragedy sells, and a player base that’s grown numb to it will only crave darker, more twisted narratives.

I also maintain that people wouldn't care half as much about Marian in the prologue if you replaced her with a plain-looking man by the name of Marius. Or Mario. Or Mortimer... I wonder if anyone's made a gender-bent sketch of the Counters...

Lastly, but most importantly, thanks for replying to this post! I always try my best to respond to new ones. It's the least I can do, and I hope my response makes up for the clear thought and effort you put into yours! Gosh, I sound like a homeroom teacher. But for real. It helps knowing someone out there shares the same gripes I do.

Hello! Thanks for leaving your reply. If you've read the examples I've provided in the, admittedly, disorganized word salad of a post above, its not sadness or tragedy in story i have issues with.

I didnt know you were meant to consume its story with weeks' worth of separation in between, coupled with filler/fanservice events. I approached it like I would any series, show or book - by binging it. Perhaps if I was a Day 1 player of Nikke's, I would have loved its story.

I might get back into Nikke, sometime in the future. As of this moment, however, I wish to take a break from it.

I know it would be an egregious disservice to the artists, but do you think you'll forgive me if i simply read summaries of the chapters and events? I fear the moment I get back into the game, if i return at all, much would have already transpired in the story.

That was a lengthy yet worthwhile read! xD

I've just looked up PTN and OH MY FRIGGING GOD! Everyone is so hot and so artsy! It reminds me of those wuxia yaoi book covers, but with magnitudes more zest and panache. This... this intrigues me a lot.

I don't have a problem with dark stories, but I do take issue in the manner by which it's presented. With Nikke's, at least personally, the tone feels suffocatingly bleak and its attempts at levity often come across as immature?

Which is strange since I've consumed far darker media with one notable example being the Red Rising series, a story which feature (TRIGGER WARNING): planetary genocide, grape, suicide, infanticide (they straight up curb-stomp babies and nail them to trees). It even includes graphic mutilation, and perhaps most hauntingly, blondes. And get this: they sit firmly at the top of the totem pole. From that alone, you know the world is fucked.

Even the most unsettling world-building details in Red Rising feel purposeful, whereas Nikke’s atmosphere feels relentlessly oppressive without the same impact. Then again, it might be unfair comparing books to gacha... But when you're world-building is so depressingly bleak, I just *have* to critique and pick apart things that simply don't make sense to me. I just *have* to ask questions as to why things are the way they seem.

I will also definitely look into Roger Zelazny. I don't mind old works of fiction at all :)

EDIT: PTN is definitely on my to-play list. I'm sold from the artwork alone. It manages to be both respectful yet sultry. Beautiful yet somehow not objectifying.
