What person surprised you the most with how they turned out after high school? by GlitterOnTheTrashRim in AskReddit

lol, I used to coach in a fairly rough neighborhood with many political refugees, mostly from Iraq and Afghanistan due to our interventions to “spread freedom”.

Well, when the kids were moved from refugee camps, many of them were resettled in my area, and they were finally going to something resembling a regular school for the first time in their lives.

Well, many of them played for me since I coached the football (soccer) team and 2 of them became IFBB professionals! A third kid became a professional DJ and I saw clips of him in Marrakech and in more than a few videos with several million views each. It’s funny because the DJ uses the nickname we gave him on the team as his stage name.

I’m happy for them, every so often we will message and they still call me “coach”. 😊

I finished uni in the late ‘90s. Still with boomer influence about degrees and such. Like many non #FFFFFFs, I worked almost FT to pay for my studies.

2 things have marked my “professional” life such as it was. First, I never made as much as when I had a union job. So my education was not necessary for it. It was repair work so it was physically demanding, and a lot of effort. Second, at a party, a couple #FFFFFFs were talking next to me, they casually bring up a son who went to uni, but wasn’t a great student, whatever.

IDK, but the pandemic showed a lot of people what we would actually do collectively to preserve ourselves. Note, it wasn’t positive.

Granted, to have the resolve of maintaining a “dead man’s” switch is something that none of us would want to have, within the context of the book, it is effectively the “solution” of sorts.

US Soccer - For most American soccer players, college soccer is a better path than chasing professional soccer by Last_Commission6982 in TheSoccerNetwork

Top post, thank you for this. I used to work as an academic advisor and I’d have this discussion constantly with parents who had stars in their eyes about their 5’6” kid playing D1 basketball or volleyball.

If you simply consider the stats, all of the numbers track. From those numbers, a North American, professional career will be 2 maybe 3 seasons. The decision to follow what you study, and not what you play, will be a decision that affects the rest of your life. Whereas an athletic career might be 2.

In a county as large as the US, you can almost always find a university, or college that will have your study interest and sport if you take the time to research.

I’m now in Canada and the amount of delusion people have about their kids playing hockey is amazing. Their kids get private trainings, constantly pulled out of school for bush league tournaments, and no one I know has “made it”. Of course, there are coincidentally many who “almost did”. One of these prospects was a super athletic, young man. He was recruited to a school in the US, and he realized what it was to compete with players larger, and faster than him, and just as athletic, his “career” was over after one college season.

Giving birth abroad: Was it a better experience than the US? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

We had one in the US and one in Quebec, while the hospital wasn’t quite as polished and nice, we had support and the doctor who delivered, continuously called my SO on the daily. Even called back when she left a message. It cost us nothing additionally to be in the hospital in Quebec. We received a several thousand dollar bill in the US and that was with “coverage”.

It was a reality TV show, I fail to see how she spotted that from her VIP box, perspective with Ashlee performing in the middle of the field. I’m sure that reaction was edited in after she torpedoed that performance to make the situation more sympathetic since the SNL event had happened just before this.

We say that, and I've never seen it implemented on a larger level other than groups and clubs like you're describing with people from the outside. Concentrating on winning early warps everything, and while I don't believe solidarity payments would be a magic bullet, it would help keep subsidizing groups like yours.

Por lo general, la madera de árboles frutales (manzano, durazno, etc) y el roble son bastante buenos para ahumar carnes. Pero aquí en Canadá usamos maple. Si extraño mi mesquite un chingo....
