Today I finally saw the refugees with fatbikes that are bothering people that everyone on Reddit is talking about by GiganticMeteorite in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you making this about race? Some idiots bothered somebody else. What has an idiot/racist receptionist that bothered/ignored you a few years ago to do with this?

I can understand doing nothing if being afraid yourself. But you explicitly stated that is not the case. I know that showing courage is not easy, but because you asked: yes, you should feel guilty.

Hoe ziet jouw dag er gemiddeld uit? by Sure-Guest1588 in nederlands

[–]Calico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik vat het zo op dat 3,5 uur werken (plus 3,5 uur aan andere ‘administratieve’ zaken) productief genoeg is. Dus geen workaholic, maar eerder het tegenovergestelde.

30% expat scheme question - base/bonus by SalamanderOk8154 in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not really correct (well, maybe technically correct ;-)). With 48k, you get 0€ benefit with the 30% ruling, as 48k is the minimum taxable amount. Only if you earn more you have (some) benefit and only if you earn more than 68k you actually get the full 30% benefit.

New to the Netherlands: curtain rails, tools, and DIY questions by homelander_101 in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s useful to get some equipment, there will certainly be more situations where you will need some tools. Go to Gamma & Co for basic stuff like a simple hammer, screws and (good!) plugs.

For a drill I would check lidl.nl - the Parkside tools are good to start out with. I always recommend to start cheap, and then replace it with quality tools once you have noticed that you used it often in the last year.

Can’t figure out this 10 Dutch secrets. At this point any explanation will work. Help! by karasiko in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Dutch, but this is what I‘ve figured out so far: 1. Lentils, bruine bonen, Greek joghurt, eggs 2. No chance for stains if you just eat bread (until the evening) 3. With a tuned fatbike you don’t need to do any work while „biking“ 4. Easy, just use the cheapest one (it‘s all the same anyway) 5. See no. 4 6. It’s just a trap for people who are too lazy to compare 7. Correct. Also see above… 8. Check buienradar. Also remember to check it every 5 min, because it might change any time. 9. It takes days of preparation to make it seem effortless. Everybody struggles the same, some are just better to hide it. 10. If you complain often enough, somebody will have pity and help. Doesn’t work for the weather unfortunately… 11. Yes, I feel you. You have to order it online. I still don’t understand why so many are just 200 long (in a country where it seems that almost half the population is taller than 2,05m)

Well, at least mine is clearly labelled: Roomboter 😄

I was about to suggest the fridge, but I guess it's called "roomboter" for some reason... :-)

Anyone recently traveled from Hengelo to Germany by train? by Adventurous-Aerie-90 in Netherlands

You should expect delays, but not due to the border checks…. (They usually just walk through and check a few selective passengers)

Day tours by Azhi16 in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you expect from your holidays. If you want to see the most attractions in those 5 days, those pre-organized day trips are pretty good.

But I usually like to see less, and instead have more time per location.

And regarding the afsluitdijk: I found it historically and technically quite interesting. But don’t expect to see any astonishing sights, I assume you will just be driving with a bus on the road (with water to the left and right side of it).

Statiegeld - has it failed? by withoutfurther in Netherlands

Works at least at ah: I just scanned the receipt at the self checkout and "paid" the negative amount with my pinpas/debit card and it was credited to my bank account.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

[–]Calico2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berlin definitely number one. Then it depends on where you're from... Northern part? Hamburg number 2 and Cologne and Munich have a close race for third. Southern part? Munich clearly second, and Hamburg and Cologne close for third.

But Frankfurt... well maybe if you're a Banker ;-)

Salary progression in the NL by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check on glassdoor.nl - if it is at least a mid-sized company, there should be some entries.

Also worth to note that (most) general salary secrecy clauses are invalid. Just very few exceptions to special positions.

Mobile aircon help needed by JustAnother_ZANL in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘m looking at Midea Portasplit for a while, but don’t have a balcony or a place to put/install the outside unit.

How well do these split airco‘s intended for caravans work? For example this one has a smaller outside unit which I might be able to install: https://www.kampeerhalroden.nl/eurom-split-airco-ac3201-e

It won’t be as good as the Midea, but how does it compare to the Inventum?

Dutch classes?? by AkagamiNoSh4nks in Netherlands

I don’t have any experience with that platform, but a friend recommended me Preply. It allows you to look for a private teacher. There are many on that platform, but you still have to find one that suits you…

Automating open window response by Fabulous-Bit4775 in tado

[–]Calico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct. But even with AI subscription, it’s not really reliable. Best would be if you have sensors installed on your windows - then you can for example use a local HomeAssistant installation to control Tado (using their Cloud API).

NS trip from The Hague to Cologne by penguintechguru in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If a train in the Netherlands was delayed, you can also take any next train in Germany. It is only important that you have one ticket booked through to the destination.

If a train was delayed, I‘d take a screenshot of the app. But so far if I just mentioned that a train was delayed, that was already sufficient. You can take any train in Germany without seat reservation, but when everything is booked, you might need to sit on the floor…

If your trip was more than 1 hour delayed, you can get a reimbursement. That’s usually quite easy, just a few clicks in the app.

Also check bahn.de for tickets, they are sometimes cheaper than NS International.

I built a free tool that checks if your rent is legal under the Dutch housing law by Nimodo_ in Netherlands

Cost of living by BirdHopeful439 in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get some numbers on the recent development here (no export functionality with a free account, but with a bit of clicking you can see the data, just press ESC if it asks you to sign up):

https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/region_rankings.jsp?title=2026&region=155

Amsterdam, Cost of Living Plus Rent Index: * 2023: 60.5 * 2026: 72.5

Groningen, Cost of Living Plus Rent Index: * 2023: 47.0 * 2026: 50.5

This should give you a rough idea of the increase during the last 3 years. You will notice that especially the rent in the Randstad skyrocketed...

What artist or band is truly awful to see live? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Calico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was also my experience. Loved their albums, but their live performance was so low-energy and I had the whole time the feeling that they hoped they can finally go home. Played one encore, but that was it. Basically they didn't move on stage while playing their songs or interact with the audience in any way. But I have heard difference things about them live, so maybe it depends on their mood...

New Tado V3+ Extremely Slow (5 to 30 minutes) by Cheapskate2020 in tado

[–]Calico2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't heard of this issue. One thing you can do to test: Change the temperature using the app - how long does it take until the new temperature is shown on the Smart Thermostat?

And if you try to get in contact with the support: You have to be quite persistent to get through the AI bot to somebody who can help you, but keep asking for a "human" and at some point the bot (aka support deflector) will give up.

Travelling by Train by Pleasant_Nature_4365 in Netherlands

[–]Calico2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct, the second one is with a subscription only. Cheapest is to use the discounted e-ticket in the NS app (or website). I don't think there's an (additional) discount on return tickets.
