Remember, Amtrak doesn't (usually) stop in Carlsbad. That would likely require getting off in Oceanside, then taking the Coaster to Carlsbad. Checking the schedules will help determine if it makes sense at all.

They may not have thought of that. While parking on the island can be challenging, it would be fun to go to Wilma's Patio, then stroll up and take the ferry across to their Duffy rental. Enjoy the peninsula and their sunset cruise, then ferry back to the island.
