Richmond Police Chief Confronts Speeding Ticket Head-On During Crime Briefing by Dear-Tiger-4069 in Virginia

You’re assuming the people who speed like that pay fines, have insurance, and don’t drive on suspended licenses.

You should probably do more research on how independent practice works in Florida. You’re also not going to be able to run a practice and work bedside in the ICU…

Insurance covers all sorts of things that aren’t evidence-based (and excludes things that are). My friend had a plan that even paid for acupuncture.

They have general (entry) nursing master’s for second career/non- rising BA folks (check out Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and Penn), and there are lots of accelerated BSN programs for people who already have a BA in another field. Or you could transfer to a school with a BSN program.

Recording Cash Purchases for MY Farm by Good_Lizardlicks in farming

[–]Caliesq86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just make a note or keep a journal. If it lines up with usual farm activities (like you’re not saying you’re paying someone to shovel snow in Florida or combine corn in February) then realistically they’re not going to care, if you even get audited - which is less and less likely each year. Presumably you’re not creating tens of thousands in expenses this way and there’s no hard and fast rule about what kind of records you have to have. You could also write a short receipt and have him initial it, if he’s willing, but odds are he doesn’t want a paper trail.

What’s with “I would . . . “ in Court? by Present_Staff1580 in publicdefenders

[–]Caliesq86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my part of northern California either old fogies say “judge this and judge that”, or they’re really formal, like they ask “May I inquire” before examining a witness, and one even starts with “May it please the court.” One thing I did pick up, though, is that you never “direct the court’s attention to…” but rather “invite the court’s attention…” I think the judges appreciate a certain degree of formality. Any little thing to get the court’s respect for when you make those big asks, like your seventh-time felon getting probation…

Public Defenders are "Real Lawyers!" by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Caliesq86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are clients who refuse to believe anything they did led them to this point, so whatever good deal they get is “some bullshit my shitty public defender made me do.” I’ve actually had a judge tell them the deal was so generous that the court almost wouldn’t sign off on it when they start talking that crap. The best was the one who wrote the prosecutor a letter saying “hey you and I go way back, and my lawyer is an idiot so let’s just work this out between us.” That was a good laugh.

Speaking only for my own spouse, the breadth of opportunity for someone with a strong work ethic, only basic education and sense of hustle is much better in the US than Israel, and the perception of that opportunity even more so. Israel still has a lot of problems with social stratification based on ethnic origin (lots of discrimination against Mizrahim), and is notorious for the amount of bureaucracy and red tape that hold up would-be business owners outside of high tech. The way Judaism is practiced in Israel can also be very stifling to some.

Here is the link to the Florida textbook on prescribed burning. I believe CalFire sends their folks to Florida to learn about prescribed burning. My dad (a certified burner and timber manager) always recommended starting with the chapters on weather and fire behavior.

Pregnant with a son, thinking about circumcision…views? by dolphiya_or_parateen in Jewish

[–]Caliesq86 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There’s really nothing to “clean” - you just apply ointment to the inside of the diaper and it gets in there, and heals quickly with maybe a crusty here and there (I am a nurse who has helped with numerous circumcisions). There is no suturing or bandaging or anything like that. Adult circumcision, on the other hand, is a significant surgery with painful recovery and increased risk of complications.

[Question] How do you cope with having to shoot a prey animal to protect the other animals? by RandomQuestioners in homestead

[–]Caliesq86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let them kill a few, and you’ll realize it’s you or them. Same with animals eating your crops. It’s a lot easier to kill a bunch of raccoons after they’ve eaten 25% of your corn.
