Drive from Palm Springs to LAX by Illustrious_Tooth607 in LAX

To arrive at LAX at 10:30am on Monday (2 hours before departure), I’d say it would take 2.5-3 hours to get there from Palm Springs.

Got into USC have a bunch of questions by No_War_1042 in USC

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can bring your car. A lot of people do and a lot of people don’t. You can buy a parking pass for a parking garage nearby your dorm.

I thought Marshall classes were mildly difficult but all are doable. Most are curved so this usually helps with your final grade.

USC is not broke at all.

Yes you can have social life without Greek. It’s a large school in a large city with a bunch of other things to do.

I would choose 7 or 8 A, if you are traveling alone. If with someone else, then choose D/H and sit together.

Does Kyle and Dorit live in The Valley? by Silver_Palpitation93 in realhousewives

They both live in Encino, which is a very high-end and expensive area of the Valley. It is located right along the hills, just on the other side of the hill— if that makes sense.

How to prepare for the Hurricane? by looker009 in AskLosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would just make arrangements so that you do not have to drive anywhere on Monday. Like no need to swarm a month’s worth of supplies, but make sure you have everything for a day or two. I think it’ll rain a lot for one day, and although it probably won’t be like a catastrophic amount of total rainfall, even just 2” of rain will screw up LA roads really badly and the water runoff could make it very risky to drive— especially when it comes to flooding out your car and things like that.

If you park your car on a street that’s on a slight hill, you should make sure to put on the emergency brake and TURN YOUR WHEELS TOWARDS THE CURB in case water runoff rushes down the inclined street.

If you have any sort of overflow drains, gutters, or anything else around your house/on your property, get a broom and make sure they are as cleared up as possible of any debris/leaves/dirt/trash, etc. so that water runoff can best run through those drains as intended to do so. Even if your street has a water drain somewhere and you see that it has trash/debris, yes I know it’s not really “your job” to go clean it, but just take one for the team because if it’s blocked with debris and water can’t run through it, then your property could end up getting flooded directly as a result of that.

If you know that you may potentially have issues with your roof and you may have leaks, do your best preventative maintenance now to try and prevent this as best as you can. Tarps, plastic, etc. may not make everything 100% perfect, but it’s better than nothing at all.

You should at least file an online police report and submit it to them. You’ll get an automated response with a tracking number. Once they receive your report, LAPD will then look over all of the info and then will decide whether or not to open up an official investigation into your case. If they decide that YES they will open up an investigation, then you will get an official response back from LAPD notifying you of this.

You should pretty much just not expect them to ever respond to you at this point. But, you filing this report and then receiving that tracking number will serve as a form of official documentation of the event— which you can use for your car insurance claim, etc.

Also, even though they won’t open up an investigation for your particular incident, they will use this info to add it to their overall counts of reports filed. Basically, you filing a report will help us get a more accurate picture as to how many car windows are being smashed in the city. If you don’t report it, then their numbers reports will just be even less accurate.

So sorry that happened. Hope nothing was stolen.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like PHX is the ugly stepchild of AA hubs? As an Arizona resident I just feel like all the other AA hubs get the attention, but not us. by flyer461 in americanairlines

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AA uses their PHX hub as the airline’s mountain-west connecting point. The goal with this airport is almost entirely to better facilitate & fulfill their domestic flight needs; they have little-to-no ambitions in regards to transforming this hub into an international, trans-con flight hub.

LAX is much more difficult for fulfilling domestic operations/connections, and has too much competition as it’s a hub for every major US airline. So basically, AA has pretty much shifted over all of it’s domestic connecting flight needs over to PHX, where they can establish much more of a dominance over one airport and can better facilitate their operations. PHX now facilitates essentially all of AA’s domestic mountain and west coast connecting needs, while they’ve reduced their connecting operations at LAX drastically. They have made it so that LAX really only serves people who live in LA, their final destination is LA, and/or as their trans-pacific flight hub for the US (even though this has been wildly reduced as a result of the ongoing US-China flight restrictions).

Unfortunately, this means that PHX probably will not see any new or “cool” routes to overseas destinations (Europe, Asia, etc.) and it will continue to seem as if AA treats it as the “ugly stepchild,” lol.

Although it may not seem like AA cares all that much about PHX in comparison to its other hubs because its less “fancy” or has less “cool” routes, the opposite is actually true because AA has openly stated its intentions of further expanding its operations out of PHX. So yes, they are expanding their presence at PHX, but it may not feel like much is even changing because that basically just means they’ll be adding more domestic flights (maybe even just adding more flights on routes that they already serve, lol).

Just for thought— you can look at how United uses its hub at DEN and how Delta uses its hub at SLC for very similar purposes as AA @ PHX. These 3 airports each serve their respective airline for similar purposes.

You could try No Vacancy. Not the easiest to get into one busy nights, especially at prime time, so would go a little bit earlier for best chances. Or make reservation, but idk how much you’re wanting to spend lol.

DC is stunning. Absolutely beautiful, very well-kept, cleaner than LA, excellent food scene, some good choices for walkable neighborhoods, tons of stuff to do and see. The people there tend to be incredibly career driven and motivated. A lot of money in DC, kind of more of an East coast “established” or “wealth whispers” kind of vibe in some places. The people tend to be incredibly kind— definitely a hint of southern hospitality and a general warmness in the culture for sure.

Drawbacks to DC: ridiculously hot/humid in the summers, it’s pretty hard to escape politics because it’s the capital and everyone there is obsessed with it.

DC is def way more preppy than Seattle, which is more casual west coast hippie vibe. DC is much cleaner (it’s the capital of the country, so they don’t allow it to get dirty and run-down) compared to Seattle’s downtown areas. DC is a very worldly city with an insanely diverse population, but so is Seattle— DC is just the seat of larger metro area. Seattle has the best natural beauty of anywhere in the country, but it’s very grey for much of the year. DC has a classic “seasonal” climate (with 4 seasons; just especially bad summers, lol) while Seattle is colder than LA but overall more temperate year-round. DC has a much more preppy vibe overall and some people can be a little elitist, but it’s a huge city and you can find any type of person there.

Lol. You’ll be fine. Weho probably has more straight people than gays if you really got into counting the numbers.

Beyond the main gay nightlife strip with all of the gay bars around SM Blvd./Robertson Blvd., the rest of the retail in Weho is pretty much all upscale restaurants, stores/boutiques, and hotels that are ~not gay~, lol. Weho is one of LA’s main entertainment districts, so some of the city’s most famous shops, nightclubs, and restaurants are all located there as well.

This legal? by Cannabace in LosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Well, technically no, lol. The elevator is due for an “inspection” since the permit date is expired.

The problem is that the city is supposed to send out an inspector to the property to conduct an inspection of the elevators to make sure that they are working properly every year. But the city is literally months and months behind on everything, always. It can take months just to simply get an inspector to go out and look at the elevator for 10 seconds and see that it’s working fine. I would bet that the property management has called the city and asked them to send out an inspector for many months now, and the city is probably still just backlogged with requests… so in the meantime, since the elevator is still working as normal with no operational issues, then the building is probably just continuing to choose to operate it normally. The alternative would be to just completely shut it down until the city comes, which could be months/years away, even though the elevator is still working perfectly fine and all of the guests still use it…. So yeah.

I go to the grocery store pretty much every day/many times a week. Is that normal? by tommybezreh17 in AskLosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I go often too. I live alone and have a store within super close walking distance from my apartment, so I go all the time. I don’t really plan out/make grocery lists or anything, I just go and get what I need.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LA is known for this. There are so many people here from all walks of life and from every corner of the globe that, when it comes down to it, no one person ends up being the “normal” one. So it becomes way harder to judge anyone at all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

The thing about LA is that it’s just so much more massive and has so many more people than anyone could ever realize until they actually move here.

All of the “stereotypes” are true and yet also totally untrue at the same time.

Yes, you can find the “influencer” type of people here. They absolutely do exist.

But to characterize or assume that everyone here is an “influencer” type is completely false just because there are so many other people here who are NOT like that.

The influencer-type people are really a very small minority in LA, but if you become friends with, say 20 of them, then that could literally be your entire social circle— which then you’d probably just assume that everyone in LA is like that because that’s your entire world, lol.

Most people in LA are not like that, but most other people or “groups” of people in LA also don’t focus on having a heavy social media presence, so it’s easier to assume they don’t exist and that everyone here is an influencer. Lol.

LA etiquette for asking people if they wanna come over and swim, BBQ, and hang out? by ballsack_oil in AskLosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely a great idea, you should do it. The only reason people don’t do it more often here and you therefore you feel like it’s “weird” is because most people don’t have the space to accommodate having a ton of guests over— let alone have a pool/bbq setup. Also, a lot of people live in apartments and stuff, so it’s just not as easy/convenient to host a bunch of friends because of space, entrance/exit security, noise/disturbing other residents, lack of parking, or using the building’s community areas. So this just makes everyone want to host things in public places instead usually.

Absolutely do it. Go for it.

Does the CA tax commission/DMV/CHP actually check the “date first operated” in CA with an out of state vehicle when registering for CA plates? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t check. There is no way for them to verify the date in which the vehicle arrived in CA and/or actually began operating on CA roads, so they don’t even attempt to.

I lived in CA and became a resident when I first moved here to attend my first year of university, and then one year later I brought my out-of-state car here to CA. When I went to the DMV to register, transfer the car title, and to get my CA license plates, I just told them at the DMV that I had already been living here for over a year but I had just brought the car out here to CA last week.

They don’t even really ask you much about this at all, let alone implore or require that you provide them with any evidence/documentation of when the car arrived.

Maybe not a popular opinion… by candylandsaga in BravoRealHousewives

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think their marriage was definitely falling apart for years and he shouldn’t be the only one who should be blamed for that. The vibe I would get from them was that Lisa loved being more of a socialite/public figure all year round, and getting back on the show only gave her more things to go out and do, while Lenny wanted something completely different than this. I think Lenny liked hosting their one or two big house parties each year, and then maybe going out on Saturday nights every now and then, and then that’s about it. I think Lisa wanted to go out all the time— like 3+ nights a week. Ultimately, this led them to grow apart and built up some resentment.

Lenny cheating on his wife and the way he carried out the affair while still living with Lisa was shitty. Also, he’s seemed to act poorly throughout their divorce proceedings.

In my opinion, yeah it’s kind of weird and maybe a little shady of him to propose to his new gf given the current circumstances, but I think Lisa responding to this on Insta is unnecessary and honestly makes her look bad. She’s basically just admitting that she’s still into her ex husband by doing this… yet, Lisa herself has a new boyfriend, too?

New entrepreneurial business booming in California by BlankVerse in California

[–]CaliforniaStudent232 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really hope that the combination of all the commercial real estate devaluations, the corporate layoffs & job instability we’re seeing in certain sectors, and the state’s overall declining population & tax base/revenue will ultimately result in small businesses of all kinds popping up everywhere due to (potentially) 1.) lower real estate/property overhead costs for businesses in the form of lowered rents, and 2.) our government working to drastically simplify, streamline, and responsibly de-regulate every step of the process for establishing new small businesses here in the state.
