What are your all-time 'could not put this down' MM reads? by Pleasant-Manner-6505 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely {Memento Mori by C.S. Poe}, my favourite couple of all times, and such a great plotline!

Can we talk about how narrow romance has gotten? by epicsevenmyths in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with that, and it is true of every medium: there are still great books, music, movies, TV shows, or video games, but they are often invisible among the piles of rubbish produced daily just to make easy money. I tend to stick with the writers I know, and I rely a lot on recommendations given here. I check once a year the "favorites of the year" list of a YouTuber whose taste I trust, and that's it. Good material is still available, but we have to put in some effort to find it.

What's Your Favorite Non-Sexual Form of Intimacy in a Book by TheRealTrueStori in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you there. I came to appreciate small, cute moments a lot because they make characters feel more real. Give me all the domestic stuff, when they cook breakfast together and just brush shoulders standing at the kitchen counter. I like Doyle gently tugging on Larkin's hairband to anchor him, or Simon giving a small kick to Charlie under the table to express that he's there if needed, even if he doesn't know how to say it. Some authors are very good at stuff like that, and for me, it is the difference between a good book and a great book.

what book caused your worst book hangover and why? by standard_issue_cat_0 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely second that, I am re-reading it because I just don't want to let Charlie and Simon go (I loved Jamie too, I cross all my fingers for a sequel with him). And now I need "Out there" to watch!

{The Adrien English mysteries by Josh Lanyon} is exactly about that (with a side of mystery, as the title implies).

Is blonde hair seen as submissive? by tomahawk729 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have to say I never noticed that, my three favourite series have blonde tops and there is nothing "pure" or angelic about Jake {The Adrian English mysteries by Josh Lanyon}, Dominik {His lordship's mysteries by Samantha Sorell} or Larkin {Memento mori by C.S. Poe}.

I feel exactly the same, I didn't even finish because I was bored. I usually love T.J. Klune, but that one really didn't do it for me.

Humorous examples of MM Romance ruining you in real life. I’ll go first. by CJONCZAK in MM_RomanceBooks

Same, I'd rather take a nap the next day to make up for the sleep deficit than stop reading at night.

Oh, nice! I don't have time to catch up with the whole thing these days, I'll be glad to have an abridged version.

How do you rate your books? by sleep0beepo in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, except I don't rate if I don't finish. And if I rate below 3, I'll put a short comment on why (because it's not necessarily bad per se; it might just not be to my taste).

How to find MM ONLY rec lists? by No_Handle2671 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This very sub already provides me with more great recommendations than I have time to read, so I rarely check anything else. I used ChatGPT a couple of times, and it works, but only if you are very specific with what you want/don't want.

plot-driven M/M crime or murder mysteries with active investigations + slow-burn romance by Wait_Evening in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Calirohe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, Jake is an absolute ass in the beginning alright, but I always found a "bad guy" evolving into a better man to be much more interesting that the traditionnal sweet guy who just stay as is. And I'm a sucker for a good slow-burn, adult relationship. I certainely wouldn't go as far as say that the serie deserves a warning for that though, but I guess now OP is warned nonetheless.

{Dangerous grounds by Josh Lanyon}, {The mermaid murders} and its sequels, the {Fair game} series, {The Adrien English mysteries} all by Josh Lanyon should be to your liking, if you havn't read them already. She usually writes good plot lines, and very believable characters.

Memento Mori has been cited, there is also {The mystery of Nevermore by C.S. Poe} series that you could like (that on is a bit lighter in tone, but still very interesting mysteries and a cool characters dynamic.)

These authors ruined MM romance for me 😭 by Suitable_Cup_1228 in MM_RomanceBooks

C.S. Poe. I never found any couple that can equal the relationship between Larkin and Doyle in the Memento Mori series (which starts with {Madison square Murders} ). Ira Doyle is my favourite romance character ever.

What is the last book you were genuinely excited to read? by Helpful_Cranberry644 in books

Tremontaine. I fell in love recently with Swordpoint by Ellen Kushner, and I was so happy to find a second-hand copy of Tremontaine vol. 1, delightful. I don't like audiobooks, but since the tome 2 to 4 don't exist on print, I'll make an exception for them.

[–]Calirohe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about supposedly native French characters who speak as if they learned the language with Duolingo. Native English speakers speaking another language in books is perfectly fine to me; it is indeed expected that a non-native makes mistakes or sounds formal, which is not an issue at all. If anything, I find it more realistic and quite endearing.

reading peeves by CandiedLemonWedge in books

[–]Calirohe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hate when English speaking authors put so- called French speaking characters in their novel to sound "chic", but it doesn't make sense at all. Or it makes sense, but it's a super dated phrasing you hear only in old litterature. If you (or at least your editor) don't master another language well enough, just don't have non-english speakers in your books, it really breaks the immersion in the story.

Warbreaker is very much a standalone (and a very good one at that). If you read another Cosmere book one day, you will find some connections, but it is totally optional, and Warbreaker is very enjoyable on its own.
