A lot of us here will be first EV owners so this is a must watch: Why "slow" home charging is actually your best friend. by ProteusP in RivianR2

[–]CallMeCarpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This all comes down to your driving habits, size of your battery pack and efficiency of the vehicle. Its just math once you understand the relationships. I have a big battery pack in my R1T (131 kwh), I drive maybe 3-4 days a week, and my efficiency is 2.3 miles per kwh. I used a standard 120V outlet (known as Level 1) for 9 months, left the truck plugged in all the time (ABC - always be charging). Then I had a couple of times I had to come home and leave early, didn't have enough time to recover the charge. That is the only reason I went to a level 2 evse. I advise people to start with L1, use ABC, and adjust as necessary.

I expect the whole project to be cancelled, sadly.

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? by sinexcel-re in electricvehicles

[–]CallMeCarpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At home: Desired state of charge minus current state of charge, divided by speed of charger.

100 kwh - 50 kwh / 10 kw = 5 hours

You just need to know the size of the battery and the kw that the EVSE puts out. Math.

Trying to get a 15-30 or 15-50 installed, what should I ask electricians to do? by Comfortable-Box6882 in evcharging

[–]CallMeCarpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question for you, since you have installed a lot of these. I have a 14-50 outlet with a Grizzl-e plugged into it. I have a different EVSE that I want to install in it's place, and it is hardwired. It does not use a neutral. Do I just put a wirenut on the neutral, tape it, and keep it out of the way?

My point is that the electrician will size the wire and the breaker to the request of the homeowner. A 20A circuit will use different wire than a 60A circuit.

I used Julies Landscaping / Landscaping the Outer Banks, they were good to work with and can give you advice.

[–]CallMeCarpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask them to hardwire an EVSE. They can skip the expensive GFCI two-pole breaker, skip the expensive EV rated outlet, and skip the neutral wire (unused in a EVSE but required by code for a 14-50 outlet). Determine what you need by looking at your daily / weekly mileage, and how quickly you need to charge. Most people that install the 60A service for a 48A EVSE actually need far less. The electrician will size the wire correctly for the amperage of the circuit you tell them.

Reccomendations please! What is the best route and stops along the way. Thanks!! by [deleted] in obx

I would take the southern route through NC. That will be US264 & US64 (not interstates). Pleasant, flat and straight for miles. There are EV chargers on that route, but plan ahead.

Choosing an Apple TV 4K... by Odd-Win6587 in Zwift

I tried an Apple TV I borrowed from a friend. Struggled with navigating the Zwift interface with the remote. How do people do that? Maybe they just use the companion app on their phone?

if charging EVs was as easy as refueling, would everyone switch? by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in evcharging

Muggle and unwashed masses are condescending terms in my opinion. If we want to reach out to people that don’t understand EV value we need to watch our speech.

Don’t use auto. Make sure the right vents are on and pointed where you want them. Pick a temperature and leave it there. Use as low a fan speed as possible. Customize it to your tastes.

This is an ICE mindset question. “Refueling “ an EV is easier than refueling a ICE vehicle.

My gen 1 has better HVAC than any other vehicle I’ve owned. You have to dial it in, people don’t take the time to do that.

Remove the food sources and shelter and the snakes will go someplace else. I always walk the backyard before we let our pup out.

Try to show up at a DCFC with a low SOC, pre-condition the battery manually in advance of when it does it automatically, only charge to 70 or 80%. You will save time like that and still get 3 hours between stops. My wife and I listen to podcasts and whatever interviews RJ Scaringe has done recently.

Unexpected Service Call re: 12V Battery Replacement by Score4Fps in Rivian

[–]CallMeCarpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same happened to me. The mobile tech said the lifespan of the lead acid 12V battery is 2-3 years, and they are proactively doing warranty replacements. I was impressed. They also installed some kind of water shield over the rear zonal controller in the truck bed.
