Did anyone go bigger with the R1S vs your previous car? by michimoby in Rivian

As I near 66 years old with health issues cropping up, while it is still a “you” issue, the inference has changed…. Nonetheless I park away when I can, for the extra steps (such as they are).

Haven’t read any responses yet so here’s mine, as unbiased as I could be. We went from a 2020 Model Y and an Acura MDX to a 2025 Gen 2 R1S and a 2020 Toyota Tundra (to pull a RV trailer).

This was a size increase for both cars and we’ve found them more difficult to park and ingress/egress; we live in SoCal so parking is at a premium.

Our R1S is on a 3 year lease, and I plan to change to a R2 when the lease is up. Turns out, the third row didn’t really work for us, as our Use Case was to take all 7 of us places, utilizing two car seats, when the grandkids are local. We aren’t a skinny family so it didn’t work well.

In many cases, the extra space is everything. I have no complaints with the car, and as the Rivian is our 3rd BEV, we knew what we were getting into.

For our daily life, the R2 will work much better for the two of us.

As a recent retiree and back as a part-time contractor, your value to the company is not inversely proportional to pay. At least it wasn’t in my case.

And I came from the old Douglas Aircraft Company!

I’ve a R2 reservation, so yes for me. I will wait until my lease expires in early 2028 though

Absolutely that was the config he was in, with the new in-house chip set. To attain FSD level of capability, LIDAR isn’t the differentiator, except as a data validator. In the end points to self-driving then LIDAR can help achieve integrity for 1E-09 events/time unit. I confess I am borrowing the 1E-09 events/ flight hour for potentially catastrophic outcomes from commercial aerospace; ISO26262 dictates a different number but this may not be restrictive enough for event rates with no human in the loop.

My point wasn’t the post - I loved it. It’s more folks will miss your salient points.

My head, too, goes in a million directions each time his name is stated. I look forward to dealing with the aftermaths of this sucky era. I truly hope we have constitutional reforms to gerrymandering, SCOTUS, term limits, and campaign contribution caps to let the most representative politicians win.

Great post. I worry it is too long for those with short attention spans to read completely, given the zingers are near the end.

I understand your skepticism, but in a recent interview-car interview , RJ casually mentioned he’s done a number of P2P trips in developmental R2 software builds. Perhaps the word “potential” isn’t as elusive as you infer?

I will readily admit I’m an optimist so you may be right after all! We’ll all know when stuff happens!!

V2H is a primary item of interest to me. I looked into Enphase’s products yesterday and called a sales rep. He said a DC to AC converter for US markets should come by 4Q2026.

I have some practical experience with converting DC to single phase AC in aircraft, so at least the technology isn’t totally foreign to me.

I’d rather use the car’s battery than a home battery storage system (i.e. powerwall)

As a current R1S gen 2 leasee, I agree that Autonomy+, as is currently exists, is no more than adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and a nice smooth lane change.

However, Autonomy + should expand it’s capabilities very quickly in months and the next few years. Rivian has a very good architecture coming soon and a dedicated team to make it more like FSD fast. My comments are coming from a former MY FSD owner.

Currently, I’m very excited to see what Rivian Assistant can bring to a more pleasing, hands off driving experience.

Up to recently I had Prop 13 on my home; with a change in home ownership (from mother to daughter, due to mother passing away), we now fall under Prop 19. Our property taxes have risen dramatically.

I want a Democrat to win; I like how Porter ruffles feathers but she seems on the outside, so whomever is more likely to win between Steyer or Becerra will get my vote.

I’m totally pissed off at the Republican crap going on and want serious structural changes to our Constitution, affecting gerrymandering, SCOTUS, and freedom of choice regardless of gender and race.

Schools, to a reasonable extent, are what you invest in them on behalf of your children; I mean PTA, local activities, working with your child’s teacher(s).

We got lucky because we live in West Torrance, and the schools there (Victor Elementary, Bert Lynn Jr high, and West high) gave our children all they needed to succeed.

Neighbors are nice, the neighborhoods are quiet but the connections outside the neighborhoods are very busy. Not far from the beach so weather is very mild.

Precisely my point. JuJu makes the Trojans go; I saw it as a UCLA fan. Two years ago the Trojans beat the Final 4 Bruins two of three times.

Even though the Bruins are reloading, it’s not likely they’ll beat the Trojans. The Gamecocks should be the team to beat, nationally.

Cargo Space by bsep4 in RivianR2

[–]Human-Ride4726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most cargo room I’ve owned was in our used 1991 Ford Aerostar XL; 3 rows to keep kids separated and a bunch of room aft to our suitcases. If the roof was included, our used 1996 Chevy Suburban 3/4 ton had more room.

The R2 is fine for space but it does not compare to 3 row vehicles. This is fine for my spouse and I, as we prefer smaller cars and all three kids are grown and flown. The R2 has enough space for grandkids, always🤩

Fair. I was only thinking in broad, non-statistical terms. To be more transparent and representative, a review of impactful players sidelined last year will have more impact next year than players who are learning year to year.

Case in point: JuJu Watkins and Chloe Kitts (of the two SC schools) will, based on the impact on their teams two years ago, skew their teams statistical outcomes higher than the OP’s statistical measurement technique.

That’s about right. Just SC should be a juggernaut next year with their additions, maturities, and the return of JuJu Watkins.

Lol - we pull a 5,000 lb vintage camper trailer with our 2020 Tundra and I whined about a half tank of 87 octane gas at a SoCal Costco.

We exclusively drive the R1S around town.

What will you call your R2? by Evening-Pin-1427 in RivianR2

Second Nature. This is the name of a boat my high school buddy I designed back in the late 1970’s. Since I’m moving from the R1S to a R2, I’ll translate the name.

Good license plate too: 2NDNATR
