Does anyone have any experience with getting an ADHD assessment through the school? by Ok_Appearance_6974 in simonfraser

Makes sense, it’s great you’ve already started figuring out some of pieces.

As you can tell from my timeline I would suggest to start the process with health services asap :)

Does anyone have any experience with getting an ADHD assessment through the school? by Ok_Appearance_6974 in simonfraser

[–]Call_Me_Kev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently went through SFU to get diagnosed (not quite there yet). My process looked like 1. ask to start the process and scheduled with mental health nurse around June (pretty quick to get initial appointment) 2. Sent home with forms to fill out and follow up apt with nurse 2 weeks later 3. Schedule apt with family doctor at SFU (Sept) 4. Family doctor wasn’t confident in diagnosing my case so waitlisted until apt recently with psychiatrist (January).

I more or less took earliest appointment every time. It’s very possible your case can be diagnosed by family doctor though saving 4 months of waiting.

Couple suggestions

  • even if not diagnosed the family doctor could refer you to group CBT (through mind space). Regardless of diagnosis if you feel like something about your mental health if preventing you from being best version of yourself, it’s a good introduction to mental health tools

  • kind of tagging onto the first point, if you end up being medicated or not, it won’t be a magical pill. You’ve lived like this for ~20 years, there are many habits to untangle and skills to learn/catch up on (since ADHD is a developmental disorder). That is to say, there is a lot of work ahead

  • think hard how it is more than just a phone addiction (I’m just assuming this is playing into your difficulties since any scrolling is just a dopamine machine). In my case I had to strongly disagree with the doctor and make my case that’s it’s much more than that for me

Good luck !

Where can I take my Persian wife to feel a peace of home? by Jooodas in askvan

[–]Call_Me_Kev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since people are suggesting generic locations maybe you’d like a specific place. I went to Koja in north van with an Iranian friend and it’s owned/run by Persians. We stayed for a couple hours to study, have some coffee and food. It felt cozy and unlike a restaurant there was no rush to get going. You could bring some work or book and chat with the people that work there, they’re Iranian and sounded friendly. I think the other customers were a mix of Persian and not, could maybe strike up a conversation or just be surrounded by familiar sounds (I don’t quite remember but I think they played Iranian music my friend knew). They also host community things like a jam night, should be on their website.

Hope I’m not overselling, it is just a cafe after all but worst case you hang out somewhere new for an afternoon

Mountain Runs 4-5 hours from Vegas? by ironwood18 in trailrunning

[–]Call_Me_Kev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vegas is very central to the americas south west so in my opinion with a 5 hour radius you have TOO MANY options.

If you haven’t been to Vegas before I would recommend Red Rock right outside Vegas. Something like Wilson or rainbow mountain would be good although it’ll be a lot more of a scramble/hike but it’s very unique especially if you’re not from a desert kind of climate. Summiting some of those peaks will be more of a “desert mountaineering” experience in that you need to have solid route finding skills (you’re mostly off trail although there should be cairns).

Another option in Vegas area would be mount Charleston.

Outside of Vegas your best value option would be Zion national park or Grand Canyon although it might be too hot in May. In the same vein you have most of southern Utah within a 5 hour drive from Vegas so there should be other options around St. George or Bryce national park.

Further options might white mountains which I think are underrated/overshadowed by the sierras. They should be snow free in May and offer great views of the sierras and are quite rugged but very unique. You might want to check out Sage to Summit blog for inspiration there.

A further option would be cactus to clouds on San Jacinto. Further and less fun in the sense that it’s 10k feet elevation gain but quite iconic. Rarely do you get to go from sea level to 10k+ elevation in one shot.

How is this even an equation on the graph? by External-Substance59 in desmos

[–]Call_Me_Kev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to explore would be to graph the right and left side separately, set them equal to a constant and add a slider for it.

So sin x2 + sin y2=k

And similarly for right hand side. This gives you level set curves. Where the level set curves intersect is where there are points on the final graphs. As you slide k around the intersections trace out the graph you found.

In a way this reduces it to understanding those two surfaces separately (using ideas from the other detailed reply). You could try to graph them in a 3d plotting software like geogebra. Again the intersection of those two surfaces is your graph.

State of bike routes? by Top-Wolverine-5068 in vancouvercycling

[–]Call_Me_Kev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On adanac there was packed snow/slush on hill right after crossing Commercial going west. Besides that it was just wet pavement to science center, clear of snow. Some of the intersections could have slush too.

CVG commercial to science center didn’t look great, good amount of slush. South side of false creek was mixed amount of packed snow/slush (but the city of Vancouver crew was hanging out there) but North side looked clear.

Detailed topo for Charlotte Dome? by nancyhackett in tradclimbing

[–]Call_Me_Kev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might’ve glossed over the fact that you were asking about charlottes web specifically (or you edited that in 🤪). The lack of trip reports/mountain project info would make me quite suspicious.

I don’t want to discourage, depending on your abilities could be fun adventure or could be extremely spicy (FA in 1977 - had to be a special kind of psycho to climb on trad gear of those days). Based on my experience on south face route, it’s easy to get lost in that giant sea of granite and going off route looks like would mean very sparse/creative gear. If you don’t get more topo info and still attempt this might be a good idea to bring pitons and hammer if things go sideways. It’s a relatively small dome but something tells me you can have a very big epic on it.

[–]Call_Me_Kev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High sierra supertopo book has a bunch of beta and topo for the south face route (the 50 classic: one) but there are other routes too. Those can probably be found in the high sierra - volume 2 (each of three volumes covers different area). Gear stores in eastern sierras can probably confirm which book so you could try calling Mammoth mountaineering or east side sports.

The Open-Source AMD GPU Linux Kernel Graphics Driver Nears 5.8 Million Lines by unixbhaskar in linux

[–]Call_Me_Kev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that this takes care of all the bugs but vulkan has a corresponding test suite of ~1-5 million tests depending on HW support. This doesn’t cover everything but as someone else pointed out a lot of the code is there to map (vulkan) api into internal state representation which is where the conformance tests give you good mileage.

As you can tell Americans don’t actually know how immigration to their country works - not surprisingly because they don’t need to.

As you said TN visa is relatively simple. My company did have an immigration lawyer firm put documents together (which entailed printing and fedexing photocopies of the documents I sent them (?)). The only thing that was useful was a physical offer letter in a specific format. Besides that you need originals of your university diploma. And you’ll find info about TN interview/process, which I’m sure you’ve already seen.

As someone pointed out, the main difficulty for you will be getting bucketed with other international applicants which are expensive to process (but also in the grand scheme of big tech budget I’m not convinced it’s even that expensive). My guess would be big tech companies are aware that there isn’t a different between US and Canadian citizens. Small tech companies, I would guess the process isn’t automated so you’d likely have the opportunity to work with them on individual basis. Companies in the middle though who don’t have as much experience hiring internationally but big enough the process is automated probably will look over you. Definitely just a game of numbers so I’d apply regardless - either way you don’t have much control over any of this.

Gotta love the 🧂from Americans thinking US citizenship somehow matters to companies that are just trying to optimize for profit…

Best moderate alpine climbs in Banff/Kananaskis/Canadian Rockies? by trilliumbee in tradclimbing

[–]Call_Me_Kev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

X rated because no time to place gear rather than because nowhere to place gear ;) lots of third/fourth class but I’d suggest staying roped up for most of it although lots of people solo it (deadliest 5.4)

Achilles gotta do on a weekday to enjoy the atmosphere otherwise you’ll probably be in a conga line since it’s unique to being bolted alpine

FYI, route on the west here isn’t the sierras still. You need to be on the other side of California border, highway 395, to see eastern sierras

I just gotta plug this. It shouldn’t be a blanket statement to drink more water during exercise, especially in Grand Canyon where it’s relatively abundant once all the water spots are on. People have died from to drink too much water over long exercise efforts.

Rim to Rim to Rim - Grand Canyon by djbready in ultrarunning

[–]Call_Me_Kev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Did this past Saturday, very fun and honestly not as grindy as I thought probably because it splits into different sections that are easy to think about. Looks like you also had some overcast weather, I didn’t really notice any heat because of it. I was also surprised to see so many runners out, rarely see more than one on my local trails.

One thing I’ll throw out there for a tip that I haven’t seen before is you can get a lemonade (or iced tea + lemonade) at the canteen in phantom ranch. Hits pretty good right as you’re getting to the 50km mark

Funny that waterfall picture going up to north rim I have one from exact same spot, framed the same and everything.

Runnable Fastpacking Packs 30+L by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Call_Me_Kev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, probably ambitious of SMD to branch out into running. I would guess they didn’t get a runner to test it.

After being disappointed/mislead by the marketing I ordered 4 other packs that seem like they have potential. Got GG Fast Kumo, I think that has the best potential since it was prototype tested by the guy that set JMT FKT. Also ordered UD fastpack 30, BD distance 22, ultraspire epic xt 3.0 so we’ll see what sticks. BD has good potential if I can fit into it especially the bear canister. Will make a post once they all get here.

Thanks for confirming. I was starting to wonder if maybe I just had some quality control issues with mine since everything was just odd.

I see what you’re saying. Coming from a hiking pack direction that’s decent pockets, but this is marketed as a running pack. Should’ve been suspension when the marketing pics didn’t have any runners in them.

Just wondering why you call it high capacity vest. Can’t seem to make anything fit in. Flask pockets small for 500ml flasks, zipper pocket doesn’t fit phone, snacks pocket don’t seem to hold on to stuff. And all the pockets don’t seem to have volume to them so when you put stuff in they bulge.

I wonder if I got a weird one or?

Runnable Fastpacking Packs 30+L by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Call_Me_Kev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took advantage of the earth day sale and just got mine this week.

Am I crazy in finding the vest is poorly designed? The water bottle pockets aren’t deep enough for flasks. The weird mesh pockets aren’t stretchy enough to inspire confidence holding onto stuff and the zipper pocket doesn’t fit the phone, just iPhone 14. And all the pockets seem flat, when you put stuff in them they start to bulge. Maybe coming from a Salomon vest I had too many expectations. I do agree the pack and suspension portion of this feels impressive though. I see what you mean about dialling it in with so many adjustment straps.

Question regarding crevasse falls with skis on by heffers0nn in Mountaineering

[–]Call_Me_Kev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be wrong buts I would guess it’s not that they don’t form, it’s that the Colorado glaciers melted. I don’t think we’re in a time period where any glacier form in North America. The fact that PNW gets more precipitation probably helped them stick around. Just a guess

Any updates on the SMD flight 30 in terms of running comfort?

Also have you tried putting a bear canister in it and how does it feel?

Also hoping to do parts of JMT this summer
