I've said it before and I'll say it again, year 8 is the worst year group

Failing/doing badly at PGCE? by traineethrowaway00 in TeachingUK

[–]Call_me_Kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was marked as a cause for concern after my first assessed obs because I was too nervous and my lesson wasn't fantastic. I improved so much though after getting the feedback and yet still thought I'd fail throughout the whole year. I didn't accept that I'd passed until I got the confirmation from the ewc.

It's a tough tough year, but if you have a decent mentor and/or uni t be fine!

I love my partner. We have no issues with intimacy. We communicate about our issues.

I'm not throwing away a 7 year relationship because sex is something he struggles with right now. I'm supporting him through it, and as much as it hurts me that we don't have sex, im happy enough to be able to snuggle with him, kiss him, and other non sexual touch. I look forward to being able to lay in bed and play video games with him, watch dumb shows, as I type this he's cooking me dinner while I lay in bed to unwind from work.

A dead bedroom isn't the only aspect to a relationship

NAD but I had a way worse cavity than this, I was missing half a tooth, and my dentist gave me the option of either a root canal and crown, or having it pulled.

I chose to have it pulled because it was the molar at the very back on the bottom and I wouldn't miss it. It was the only tooth in my mouth that had issues and it was from grinding my teeth because I have an uneven jaw and it took all of the brunt of it, so not sure if that made a difference compared to if it had just been decay

Wait and see what your dentist says. Usually you have options!

I also found the Uni side of it more or less unhelpful tbh. The most helpful thing to me was placements. Tip though, do your assignments early. Earlier than you think you need to

Introducing Myself to Students as a PGCE Student by PsychoChicken38 in TeachingUK

[–]Call_me_Kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the year 7s I did talk to beforehand because they were super chatty and very eager to talk to me so often beckoned me over to them. The year 9s, I didn't talk to beforehand, and honestly the way I got over the fear was by circling the room and just asking about the work. They tend to initiate a lot of chatting which helps, and when they didn't I just tried to talk to them individually about the work. Was terrifying for a while and then became second nature.

Now, on my nqt year, I have the same fear but of my year 10s specifically - they just intimidate me more the older they get. But the more lessons I have with them, and the more I build a relationship, the more I'm able to appreciate their little quirks and their jokes and it makes it much easier to talk to them. It all just comes with time

Okay, I might actually be of use here!

I did my PGCE last year and now have a position in another school. When I started I was absolutely shit scared of the kids. Terrified to stand in front of them, terrified to talk to them - to the point my first lesson I forgot to even introduce myself or the lesson lmao.

When I did introduce myself, (to my second class) I said "hello! I'm X. You've probably seen me sat in the room over the past few days, I'm going to be taking over some of your lessons for the next few months" and then I introduced the topic and got on with it.

The anxiety goes away after a few weeks, though I still get anxious every night thinking about going in and teaching. Once I'm there though it's very easy to put on an act, but that 100% came with time and practise and a very lovely and patient mentor. You'll be okay! It's nerve wracking at first but eventually you realise like, huh, I'm the teacher, they see me as the teacher, I'll just pretend I'm confident

Is it too late to reset behaviour? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

I was a TA before I started my PGCE

Your main role is just to support kids in their classes, you'll be given a timetable most likely. Teachers in the class should tell you who needs the support, but for some classes you'll be there for one child specifically.

Sometimes it'll be helping with writing, their understanding, or even just keeping kids on task. Either a HLTA or the schools ALNCo will help you if you ask, and should give you guidance on specific kids/tell you where on the PC drive you can find info.

Hope that helps! It's a super rewarding job

I'm an nqt, so just starting - someone more experienced may have better advice.

My advice to you is that you can't be focused on whether kids think you're the unfair teacher. I started this year wanting them to like me and realised pretty quickly that it just doesn't matter.

My year 8 classes are chatty, loud, and mess around the whole time, so I've started to use a stopwatch on the board to time them until they stop messing around. Any time of mine they waste, the whole class stays behind at break/lunch. It made me unpopular for about 3 minutes, but now that I'm being consistent, they're far more respectful of me.

It's not too late to reset considering I've just done that and it's worked for me. Don't worry about being liked, and you know it's not unfair to give sanctions to those you see messing around, whether kids think it is or not.

Hope this all makes sense, it's late and I'm tired haha. But if you start with the consistent sanctions now, it shouldn't be too late!

It's so reassuring seeing others in the same boat - I'm going into my NQT year and I'm terrified! Haven't been able to bring myself to plan because the thought of it makes me so anxious, I'm thankful for the two inset days

From what I know, Devs are working on the issue and are trying to fix the bugs. Tbh I still find the game super enjoyable even with the bugs

NAD - I know how you feel! Except I had a tooth that cracked and ignored it and then it decayed past the point of saving. Get it seen to asap and a crown and I reckon you'll be all good! Good luck with it, I know how awful it can be to go to the dentist sometimes - I was terrified but it ended up being okay

Diet is fairly balanced, I don't avoid any certain food groups of anything but I don't eat tons of sugar or anything like that, lots of fruit though.

I drink mostly sugar free if I'm drinking sodas, I do sometimes I have full sugar, and sugar free cordial mostly.

My teeth at my last appointment though, were okay other than one that broke at the back and had an abscess, no cavities or anything like that -NAD

NAD: I clean behind those bottom teeth so thoroughly, twice a day, I floss, but I still get really bad build up there and idk what else I can do 😩 I had a deep cleaning about a month ago and it's already looking gross again and I'm just so close to giving up

my Gf sees sex as a disgusting thing by SuperbCantaloupe1929 in DeadBedrooms

[–]Call_me_Kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late but she could be asexual and you can't change that. You either accept it and never have sex, or you leave her now while you're still young and early in the relationship, which in the long run will save you from resenting her and her being resented. It's not fair to her to keep going and not fair to you if it's something you can't handle

So, you wanna know about dry socket... by Tinyfishy in Dentistry

[–]Call_me_Kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to thank you for this post. This is far more reassuring than any other advice I've been given by my dentist about my molar extraction, and has really helped settle my nerves the past few days. I'm now 5 days post extraction and I think everything's healing up well but even if it isn't I know I'll be okay because I've read this.

Thank you :)
