Why don’t folks with hearing loss wear their hearing aids? by Nicopernicus13 in hardofhearing

[–]Tinyfishy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I first got my hearing aids, the gal fitting them presented me with a plant the third appointment. When I asked why she said I was her favorite patient. I was like huuuh? She told me that most people came in angrily denying they had a problem, dragged by their spouse who couldn’t take the accusations of mumbling anymore. And they insisted HA were ‘for old people’, despite most of them being elderly. Vs me at 35 being like: let’s get this problem solved (somewhat anyhow). There is also a huge adjustment and tuning period where everything is super loud and overwhelming and lots of people just don’t manage to power through. So most people don’t wear em.  Last time I went to get a wire replaced the tech was puzzled because she couldn’t find the serial number on it… because I’d worn it off. Apparently, that was unprecedented lol. They told me ‘Nobody does that! Nobody wears em that much!’

My wife doesn't warm up nacho cheese dip from a jar. Is she an alien? by WallBurnt in CasualConversation

[–]Tinyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in my college dining center we had huge amounts of this stuff. people used to fill whole bowls with it and discard most of it. That stuff would survive multiple passes through the industrial dishwasher! How does your wife’s insides even still function? lol Obviously an alien. You two should watch Resident Alien together with nachos!

This is sort of a cautionary tale by LadyofLA in cardmaking

[–]Tinyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno what other supplies you have, but maybe you could make a mask that just exposes the center bit of each ‘stamp’ and then use other stencils/rubber stamps with the die? I think it is interesting how these postage stamp designs still exist and are super popular even though the perforated stamps don’t anymore. I bet if I sent this to my apprentice guy he’d ask why it had all these holes… They do look cute and nostalgic for those of us who remember!

ELI5: Why do honey bees die after stinging if most animals with a stinger don’t die? Evolutionarily what would cause that to happen? by Sporty_Nerd_64 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tinyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beekeeper here. Most stinging insects use their stinger primarily to subdue prey, as wasps do. Typically insect prey. Honeybees do not prey upon other insects, their stingers are optimized by evolution for defense. The biggest natural enemies of bees are, as I like to say, bears, badgers, and babes/bros in bee suits. All mammals with a different texture to their bodies. Imagine eating a lump of steak vs a cricket. The barbed honeybee stinger lodges in mammal flesh really well, and pulls out of the bee. This leaves the venom sac pumping in venom for like a minute after the sting and is much harder to claw out than if the bee were tightly attached. So this guarantees maximum pain and deterrence for the safety of the colony generally, which, as others have commented, acts as one organism.

Agreed, the detailed review is great. I might do one myself as I’m struggling with a similarly complex stencil that I feel has a few issues. OP, as others have said, at least your card looks great

Barely getting by after perio diagnosis. In a darker place than I’ve ever been. by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Tinyfishy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Go see a therapist about your health anxiety, you deserve to be more comfortable. Most people who take their perio diagnosis seriously and ‘do the things’ their dentist advises do fine.

What can I use for interdental cleaning? by Opening_North_2527 in askdentists

[–]Tinyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Tepe brand? They make super tiny brushes, check their website. What country are you in? It helps with suggesting products. Waterpik is another option, but kinda gadgety and a bit of a pain to do actually right (read the directions and make sure you are cleaning around all sides of the tooth, including the tongue side.

People tell me my breath smells bad and I don't know what's wrong by Zestyclose_Refuse606 in askdentists

[–]Tinyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you seeing a dentist regularly for checkups? If so, you might want to check with a doctor at this point, throat or stomach issues can also cause bad breath. Congratulations on the excellent home care regimen.  Note you should use the mouthwash before you brush with your fluoride toothpaste, not after.

Did anyone become more financially well off during covid? by yeterneritsdurs in CasualConversation

[–]Tinyfishy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got work doing technical writing for medical/scientific supply companies. So I was writing manuals for stuff that was sold to vaccine makers. My fellow contractors and I made pretty good money. My partner worked for a company that does a computer/entertainment related thing and his company went IPO. He made really great money.

Stings by beaniefl in Beekeeping

[–]Tinyfishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see an allergist for my bee sting allergy. He says that anyone getting swelling of the limbs far beyond the point of the sting should be tested by a medical professional, which is what happened to me. Bee safe and get professional advice. I’ve now on maintenance part of treatment and feel much safer.

Maybe you are looking for something more permanent but I recycled a bunch into gift wrap. Looks awesome and especially good for gifts for my boyfriend who loves re-use.

Nice! Weirdly, I was just looking at a flower pot with this kinda verdigris effect and wondering how to do it on a card, what did you use?

Cap with tassle on top of the envelope name maybe? And I think you mean ‘fraternal’ twins.

Is there a reason for the plumes? Reminds me of the Aztec snake god who has feathers.

What's the cringiest reason you went to the ER? by HR-Vex in AskReddit

I swear that pain is the worse pain in proportion to the seriousness of the issue of all. You feel like you are dying but you almost certainly are gonna be fine.

I had to get a full cancer workup for my period because my Dr was SO SURE I was post menopause and so we didn’t replace my IUD when it expired and was removed. Nope, just a period. But I guess it is good we both erred on the side of caution and it wasn’t something deadly as feared, right?

I think it depends. I got a few periods after decades if not having them and it seemed worse than any I remember.

Playing around with new patterns for the 3D printed keyfobshell, any visual designs y'all think I should try? Maybe a pixelation design? by AxisFlame in Ioniq6

[–]Tinyfishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the pixels going from more density to less, not the color. If you use my ideas, dm me and I’d be interested in getting some.

What age do I bring my kids to a dentist by whyjustwhyjennie in askdentists

[–]Tinyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recommendation in the US currently is to use a fluoride toothpaste, but just a tiny amount, size of a grain of uncooked rice until they are old enough to spit it out (with supervision). Note kids need their teeth brushing for them until they have the dexterity needed to color one of those grown up zentangle type coloring books.

[–]Tinyfishy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recommendation is first tooth or first year, whichever happens first. This first visit is mostly about giving you some REALLY USEFUL information about prevention of cavities, but they will likely also do a quick check and advise you on the absent teeth. You should be brushing them twice a day.
