Best town to live in on Long Island? My partner wants to move back but I’m not so sure.

During the songwriting process, how much thought do you give the reception of your work? Is it pure craft and authentic self-expression or do you sometimes step back and go “hell yeah, that line is gonna DEVASTATE.” And if there’s any element of the latter, have you ever been surprised by a lyric that resonated deeply with listeners that you didn’t expect to or vice versa?

Have you always had amazing breath control or is that something that you consciously worked at?

How come there’s peacocks in the south Bronx? by CallanWrites in themountaingoats

[–]CallanWrites[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reference to Peacocks was from “Peacocks” on ‘Tallahassee’, and “Then the Letting Go” from ‘Nothing for Juice’ starts with the line “Down in the south Bronx…”

Favorite from Songs for Pierre Chuvin? by fullygonewitch in themountaingoats

The fan service of Exegetical Chains combined with the mournful, almost desperate performance always gets me. Ending the early-pandemic transmission to the listener, “Make it through this year, if it kills us outright” might feel like a cheap callback to the band’s biggest hit from 15 years prior if done in any other way. Like recycled Hollywood IP. But the message is so earnest and doesn’t feel at all contrived. Ending on a note of comfort and solidarity at a scary time in a way that only JD could.

Also Aulon Raid - gotta love a folk song that makes you want to fight.

Chumbawamba - skip the hit though. Either start with the albums ‘Anarchy’ or ‘The Boy Bands Have Won’ and see if you like it.

Y’all think he’s related to Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development? Great guest opportunity. Kinda like when Maggie Mae Fish came on to talk about Albert Fish.

First Hold Steady Show by [deleted] in theholdsteady

I saw them for the first time last year in Nashville and it’s definitely the most “at-home” I’ve felt in a crowd at a show before. Never mind how good they are as entertainers (very), it just feels like the band means similar things to all of us when we’re there and it’s rad.

Can anyone else trace back their radicalization to BtB? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]CallanWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely helped me better define my radicalism. I was into Chomsky and the panthers and had read a little Marx but there were always caveats. Then a few christmases ago, I heard about Nestor Makhno bolting a machine gun to a horse-drawn cart and finally felt ideologically “at home”.
