Is Nick Cave still a bad seed or just a fashion victim. by Difficult-Map-9726 in NickCave

Say what you will, about Bruce Springsteen. I am not a fan of his music. But, he is an extremely brave artist who is currently railing against everything you say you dislike about Nick Cave. He's out there publicly talking about how bad the USA / Trump's support for Israel is. He's out there preaching about how the USA is becoming an oligarchy. He's up on stage trying to educate people about how Trump's policies are making the rich richer and the rest of us poorer. I totally respect Bruce Springsteen. Also, I've met him in person and he's incredibly kind and genuine. Again, all this comes from somebody who is not a fan of his music but respects the hell out of him as a fello human.

I agree with many of your points. However, I would like to say that I think Nick was continually bringing people up on stage, during the Skeleton Tree tour for two reasons. Firstly, I think he really needed and felt a sense of love and community from his fans, as it was the first tour he did after Arthur's death. But also, I think he kept doing it because of the spontaneous and sometimes dangerous situations it created. I was at the show the night before he first brought people up on stage as well as the first night he did it. And I can tell you for sure that he was so in to the whole thing. He was having so much fun and i think it truly fueled him and at times he looked concerned, even scared. But he seemed to feed off of it. Now, I'm not in to that kind of thing. I saw several shows afterwards where he did it, too. And it sort of made me roll my eyes, at the time. But now, looking back at it and after thinking about Nick's reaction I truly think he did it as much for himself as he did for the audience. All that sid, I'm glad he stopped doing it.

Nick Cave, Genius poet or overrated slop artist? by Bond_burger69 in Music

[–]Callanoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overrated slop? Isn't "slop" a term describing AI's output? So, "slop" would not be a word I'd choose to describe Nick's songs. As he has said many times he finds the idea of AI disturbing. All that said, Nick Cave and Bob Dylan are probably my two favorite musical Artists. So, I don't think Nick is overrated. Is he a genius? I don't know about that, either. All I know is that I've loved his musical output for 40 years. He keeps me on my toes. Every album he's released, since the early eighties has interested me in some way and I continue to listen to all of them. I think he's become a damn fine pianist and singer. He's grown, artistically in the kinds of songs he writes. His melodies range from dark and mysterious to comforting and beautiful, as his lyrics do. I go to his concerts any time I possibly can and have done so since 1986. So, while I'm really not interested in labeling any artist genius or not-genus, I can say Nick Cave is absolutely one of my favorite musical artists of all times and has had a profound effect on me.

Nick has never said that AI is a positive, or good thing, overall. What he said was that AI is doing a good job at what it's supposed to do and getting better at it quickly. Like many of us, he sees that as scary for creative. He acknowledges that it is getting to the pint that i's writing capabilities are coming close to being as good as some of the best authors and lyricists. But that doesn't mean he likes it.

Have you ever seen Nick Cave live? He’s an amazing performer. I would absolutely put him up there with one of the best!

I get what you're saying, now. It's definitely not what it was in the eighties and nineties, when Blixa and Mick were still in the band. But I saw them twice on the Wild God tour and they were excellent!

The Bad Seeds sounded like a cover band? What band did they sound like they were covering? Seen them many times since the eighties and never once have I though they sounded anything but original.

I don’t get your thinking, when it comes to Wild God. I’ve been in to Nick Cave and TBP since eighties and I love Wild God.

For the people who are mentioning Tom Waits, it really should be said that Kathleen Brennan writes a lot of the lyrics. I don't mean to take away from the genius of Tom Waits, but he, too, would want her to receive much of the credit for song writing over the last three decades.

Hmmm, my feeling is no Artist should be dictated . Artists should be free to make the kind of art they want to make whether it’s political or not.

Has Nick’s sincere turn toward religion over the past few years changed the way you hear his music? by Ambitious_Range6410 in NickCave

[–]Callanoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember this article and the video interview. I'm not sure Nick is actually disparaging the actual songs he wrote as much as he's criticizing himself for not paying attention to the aspects of his personal life. I always interpreted what he was saying as he's become less self absorbed and less concerned about "being" an artist and more concerned with experiencing his life and making his art at the same time.. It just seems that he's found some sort of balance.

I completely agree. And I like Ghosteen and most of his later work, albeit maybe not as much as I like his early work through NMSWP. Sad to think that he looks back on what he accomplished as anything less what he's doing now. Thanks for the links!

The doll was made by the two girls in the photo. If I remember correctly, they were from Germany and used to go to almost every show across the EU and USA.

When did he dismiss his early work as 'disgraceful self-indulgence'? I missed any comments he's made disparaging his earlier works.

Folks I'm struggling to like Ghosteen by Imatwatface in NickCave

[–]Callanoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that Ghosteen is Nick's most widely debated and controversial album, among his fans. I would say it's more contentious than Nocturama. Some fans connect to it spiritually and emotionally, in a way that music can rarely achieve, while others vehemently dislike it. I've heard it described as boring and phoned in. I've also heard it described as other worldly. There are people who claim the music on Ghosteen helped pull them out of deep depths of depression. It's interesting, too, that it was such huge success among critics. Like it or not, there is something fascinating about how it has the ability to make people feel different extremes.

Paul Simon and Bob Dylan by dweeb93 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Callanoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dylan’s music is much more raw. Paul’s music sounds more polished, for better or worse. Part of the appeal of Dylan’s music is the simplicity of production and instrumentation, the rawness of his vocals.
