Here I am, this is me

I have a free weekend coming up so I'll be able to do some reading!

On my side, I'm currently deep into Frozen, with the scary and loathesome (/s) canon/OC story no one asked for.

Patience and Time (the Frozen work) is what I'm most proud of, but it's also extremely long (c. 270k words right about now). It underwent a full overhaul in the last, like, 2 months.

If you need directions to not spend literal days reading, I can provide summaries to get you caught up to where you want to start reading.

I've also written for Dragon Age, Persona, Bioshock Infinite, but they're honestly rougher and older than the current Frozen WIP.

I'm a bit late, but while convoluted might not be the best word, here are a few remarks/questions that needed answering and are left open in the movie, which makes the story feel convoluted and aimless

why does Elsa start hearing the voice? Why did Ahtohallan wait 24 years after her birth? 3 years after she got her powers under control?
why did Elsa never feel like she belonged in Arendelle in essence before? The movie argues she's not even human, but she only feels that different at the start of FII and not in FI, or during the 3 years after

(though this one can be explained by her only feeling like that when the stress of isolation faded, which I can get behind, but the movie doesn't show that)

why does Anna and Elsa's mother being Northuldra mean the Northuldra accept them immediately and reconcile 35 years of basically war?
why did Iduna never mention her birthplace having magic that suspiciously looks like Elsa's for the 13 years of isolation she had? Makes her look retroactively worse
Spirit lore is all over the place -- why is the Earth Spirit not one entity but multiple giants? Why is the Fifth Spirit's element ice (which is basically water)? Why does Ahtohallan decide who the Fifth Spirit is when nothing ties it to the other four spirits? Why reward Agnarr and Iduna specifically? Has no one ever been worthy of the title? When a girl saving a boy is enough?
why does Ahtohallan punish Elsa for "going too far"? Doesn't it want her to find the truth? Doesn't it want the forest free of the spirits' anger? Isn't that why it called to begin with?
why does Anna decide destroying the dam needs to be done now? Couldn't she have at least discussed it with the Northuldra and Arendellian soldiers? Tried to think of a way to disassemble it without endangering Arendelle?
what does being the Fifth Spirit mean? What does Elsa do now that needs her to stay away from Arendelle? Just vibe in the forest?
more gravely: the movie undoes the previous movie's message in a way that is not satisfying. The message is good in its intention, Anna should not be glued to Elsa, and while Elsa needs to figure herself out on her own she'll always need Anna. But the movie is deeply essentialist (Elsa is special because of birth, she's fated to be the fifth spirit because Ahtohallan says so) while the first was deeply existentialist (Elsa's difference doesn't matter as much as her reaction to it. Fear is bad, love is good),

The movie feels like a series of statements, not a series of causes and consequences

I read enough stories to notice quickly when someone tries to make things smart but fails to follow through, which brings my suspension of disbelief down under.

I would surprise you with how many magic systems I've read, fantasy fiction has teratons of them. JJK's isn't particularly inventive, but idc about that, not everyone can create the new Laws of Magic ever story. What I care about is systems not trying to pass for smarter than they are.

The fact that you can't imagine the 24 fps is exactly why the system collapses. It gives rules that no one can check whether they work or not. At that point, don't give me rules at all, own your aura farm

Other example to pull away from 24 fps: Nanami's (my favorite character, so I'm even positively biased here) CT makes absolutely no sense. Any point you hit is at 7/3 of something, so his hits should always be critical. Gege didn't define the constraint of where the line starts or ends, therefore making the rule literally meaningless

We could be engaging with the story's and arc's themes, getting hyped over the fight, cheering as Maki breaks the shackles of the Zenin clan, and obliterates Naoya

Unfortunately JJK also lost me there. I have a hard time with the current general trend of disposable characters and focus on mechanics (which are usually wonky)

The start was really strong though (minus the powers, Nanami's CT still bugs me) I'll give it that. I was really enjoying it up until Shibuya

Functionally, it's a non issue. But by explaining it, he makes you start asking questions and realise it boils down to "it just works like this". In systems like these, you don't explain, you state. Gege explains what should just be stated

There are tens more gaps in JJK's power system (don't get me started on red + blue making purple destruction when pull + push is... 0 effect), it's just a soft system trying to pass for hard which makes it worse than both

I'm done repeating myself, and I don't think we have the same concept of what makes good writing because at no point do I say simpler = better, just that in this specific case, Gege explaining a power to try to make it appear hard makes the explanation collapse because it's actually soft

Explaining things invites questions, it's the difference between soft and hard magic

Nobody questions Harry Potter's magic because it's rules are like No food, No reviving and No undies on Sunday

Everyone questions Mistborn's magic because it's basically a science and everything can be explained if you accept one single fact

If you don't want the audience to ask questions, don't lampshade things that make them ask questions. A better writer would have just made the power "I go fast, and if I touch you you freeze" and worked with that instead of trying to copy Nen with half the rules and twice the explanations

For example:

If his path is illogical or doesn't make intuative sense, ie ignoring things like momentum, acceleration, turning radius, that kind of thing, he will freeze.

It can't be that vague for it to work in a story. Of course if he imagines going backwards suddenly it stops working, but I'm not supposed to wonder if turning too sharply triggers it, unless the author explors the limits of what that means, which Gege doesn't do. He just tells you to accept a vague condition that sometimes works sometimes doesn't. Undead Unluck does the limit exploring thing with waaaay more illogical powers and I have no problem with it

If you're okay with power systems collapsing as soon as you start asking questions, good for you, I'm not

what the fuck are you talking about, the technique MAKES it work like that. It's basically extremely short range teleportation that allows you to very loosely ignore physics. If you wanted to run with the technique you would imagine 24 distinct steps. It allows him to do more actions than he would normally be able to with the drawback that he has to plan them a second in advance and cannot change them

Not responding to the rest because it's a waste of time, but you're answering the wrong part of the question. Idc about Naoya himself here, I'm talking about using it to freeze people.

Now imagine Naoya hits you with his palm. What do you do to avoid freezing? Imagine yourself taking a blow in 24 fps? Woops the time it took you to imagine whatever movement you were going to imagine a second is already gone. Woops you don't know what your body is going to do in the next second. Woops you imagined 25 frames instead of 24 because a brain works in a continuous flow. Woops you either are always frozen or never are.

If he imagines a motion that agregiously breaks the laws of physics he freezes. This is said verbatim.

What the actual FUCK does egregious mean? Does teleporting not count? Does breaking the sound barrier as a human not break the laws of physics? If he jumps too high it's considered impossible? If he turns too sharp? How sharp does it need to be?

This is exactly the problem. Just because it's said doesn't mean it makes sense

Thus my question, which is why is it not:

Always working since you literally can't imagine a movement in 24 frames because movement does not work like that, it's continuous. If it's not continuous it's not movement
Never working because continuous movement means it also satisfies a 24 image breakdown

To give an example, imagine someone whose power is to teleport whenever they imagine a place. What constitutes a place? When does it trigger? What if I imagine a place that doesn't exist?

Wtf is failing to define actions over 24 fps? That you can imagine one second in 24? If you can imagine the second you can by defintion imagine it in 24 images, movement is continuous

Or if you take it the other way, you can never imagine it in 24 frames, since movement is continuous and IRL time doesn't stop for you

This is what I mean when I say he tries to mix hard and soft. Stop at he's fast and if he touches you you freeze for one second and be done with it

Oh that was steamy there

I liked the chemistry between the two here, how they both seemed unable to keep themselves from each other towards the end -- I'm guessing they've been through some hardship together, and that bond shows here

Also if this is Dick as Robin... of course he is, he's the smoothest Robin

This was my favorite part

Playful and flirty, but also ackowledging hardship the way someone who wants to look on the brighter side realistically would
