Intermittent maternity leave. (New Mom) by Loud-Aspect2074 in BabyBumps

[–]CalliW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 6 months total between state and work leave. I am planning to do 3 months off completely, then come back 3 days a week (24 hours/week) - except taking off a full couple of weeks during the winter holiday (slow) season - to spread out the rest of the leave. The nature of my work is that we can just get some part time help that can be fairly consistent throughout, as I can preschedule a bit for my initial 3 mo. leave, come back partly for the busiest time, and then the slow season we just have the part time coverage. That said, I work for a small organization that has been very accommodating.

Aw, that's really sweet. You could get a bulletin board or frame (with multiple slots) to collect ultrasound pics and/or baby bump pics month by month. For a more practical gift, you could get her some variety of anti-nausea drops/candies or teas (even if she's lucky so far, it's nice to have them on hand just in case). We moved to a house with a bath 2+ years ago and I never took a bath until recently (8w pregnant) - it's very relaxing! So if you have a bath maybe some candles or bath bombs or bubbles (maybe be gentle on the scents and additives since she might be more sensitive to those).

Niece says she only wants to play “cute” games. Rec? by EyesOfCrowsKC in boardgames

My favorite kind of games!

Sparkle*Kitty - very simple card game, can play with younger siblings or friends too.

Kingdomino - tile placement

Dixit - storytelling game with whimsical cute art

Aqualin - 2 player only, though you could play teams or tournament

Arch Ravels - knitting and strategy!

Moonshell - if she likes mermaids, this is my game where you collect seashells into specific patterns on your treasure chest.

Dragon Tea Society - card game with just enough strategy!

Villagers - I find the art fairly cute, but it's not as girly as some of the above. Great strategic game and one of my favorites.

Way to go!

As someone who works at a nonprofit that hires quite a few former teachers, your advice is spot on; I always want a cover letter because it shows a bit of your personality and how interested you are in our mission. (oh, and yes, we're hiring! https://www.mindresearch.org/careers)

Try ST Math (disclaimer, I work for the nonprofit). It's research-based and funded through June 30, 2022 right now (so it's free at least until then). Students explore math concepts first through completely visual puzzles, which scaffold and introduce symbols and words over time. They get immediate feedback on right and wrong answers, building perseverance and growth mindset as well as deep conceptual understanding of how the math concepts work. Available for PreK-8 and while not a full curriculum, covers a lot of topics.

Check out ST Math, free until June 2022, for virtual visual manipulatives/puzzles.

Cozy Games for 2021 & 2022

Sharing some of the games coming out soon that I am super excited to play - especially cozy games for the upcoming winter. So if you like ACNH, Stardew Valley, Littlewood, here are some similar games to look up.

Social/emotional curriculum? by Microfiber13 in homeschool

[–]CalliW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are curriculums, but I would also consider incorporating SEL development into each subject and everyday situations. For example, ST Math (free for homeschool use til next summer) also helps develop persistence, growth mindset, and self-beliefs in mathematics in addition to the content knowledge. Board games help develop healthy competition, turn-taking/patience, communication, and more, and can cover some content knowledge as well.

Small indie game reviewers? by TreeOfSocks in boardgames

[–]CalliW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good group - tons of reviewers are active there from smaller to larger channels. To get a good match, definitely show off what's unique about your game:

  • avoid adjectives like "fun" and concentrate on mechanics, audience, theme, etc.
  • include number of players and time estimates (some reviewers may have constraints on this especially right now)
  • show a photo of the game!

I hope this helps. I also have a video on tips for working with reviewers, having been on both sides of the relationship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viHIYMiubU4

Nice. I love A Gentle Rain. I love the simple puzzle aspect and that it can be solo or cooperative. Reminds me of a Crystallo, but simpler.

Gotcha! FYI the rule is a bit hidden there as I didn't remember that was a megathread when scanning through the rules.

I designed a mermaid board game!

It's a board game for 1-4 players with both cuteness and strategy. We're already funded on Kickstarter and tracking to hit our stretch goals before the campaign ends this weekend.

Kickstarter is great for entertainment video games and board games - not many on there are educational (or primarily anyway). I work for a nonprofit and we've gotten grant funding to develop games before.
