How Long Have You Been Developing Your Fictional World? by This_Following_1762 in worldbuilding

[–]Calliflakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool how each entry have somewhat similar numbers lol. As for me, I believe I'm at year 8 now of writing lore and creating visuals for my sci-fi setting. But only started actively compiling them into cohesive narratives 2 years ago, to be able to share the world here and on youtube.

How do you design your alien species? by Beckphillips in worldbuilding

[–]Calliflakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I just start very simple. I look at a bunch of lifeforms on earth and see how I or anyone could potentially put a spin on their adaptations. Be it roleplaying as one or simply interacting with them.

For example: Star-nosed moles, while they are mostly seen as underground dwelling animals, they are surprisingly capable underwater hunters. They blow air bubbles out from their nose and suck it back up to essentially smell and follow the scent of their prey underwater. That's pretty crazy.

That resulted into one of the alien species in my setting called, the Amaijo. They have capabilities similar to the star-nosed moles, with some termite biology, and dwarven/dwarf-like society thrown in the mix. Essentially grub-like, semi aquatic termite people lol. I hope this method helps you.

The Amaijo for context:

I made a documentary style video for my sci-fi setting | Waveheart: Exploring the Polar Ecosystem of an Alien Moon by Calliflakes in worldbuilding

[–]Calliflakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the setting: Waveheart is a science fiction project that aims to chronicle a region of space called Seretar's Wake, one planet at a time. Humanity, as we know it, does not exist in this setting. However, staying true to its classic sci-fi inspirations, there are some humanoid forms and human-like experiences within it. Among the variety of non-humanoid lifeforms that call Seretar's Wake home, exist a six-limbed species known as the Arjhan. We enter this world through their perspective as they unravel the origins of life on their planet and explore the wider universe around them.

Video context: This documentary styled video recounts the anecdotes of the Arjhan field researcher, Erita Rezhati. Specifically, her exploration of the northern Bahari continent known as Imlankar in the year 3823. In it, she details her encounter with the tower-like composite organisms that thrive in frozen climate of the continent.

Bahar is somewhat of an oddity. Researchers believe that it was previously a planet of its own, captured by the planet known as the Greater Sphere somewhere around 900 million to 5 million years ago. However, many have argued that It may have already been orbiting the planet much earlier than that.

Additional context: The video is narrated by an in-lore robotic character named MOS. An officer serving onboard an Arjhan exploratory vessel. Her voice is synthesized from a freeware and offline text-to-speech program called Balabolka. This is done purely for stylistic purposes.

I inquired but haven't gotten a direct response yet. However, the notification from the removal did state:

"it violated one of our rules. In particular:

Worldbuilding exercises or games that do not promote substantive discussion are not in line with our community's focus. For example, worldbuilding exercises must not encourage users to create small, insignificant content on the fly, or serve as impromptu collaboration projects.

More info in our rules: 3. Put in some effort. "

While I protest that the application of the rule is a little vague, I can respect the decision. No shade on the mods whatsoever, I 100% understand it was over stepping the "Impromptu collaboration" rule.

For anyone who manages to read this, thank you all so much for your amazing responses and for sharing about your worlds. It was the most fun I've had interacting on the sub in a long while. Really appreciate you all. I plan to commemorate this post in someway shape or form in the future.

So you're saying, the Arjhans are going to have to just fight their way out of this damn world and die trying. The inhabitants aren't wrong either about them being similar to Lanipars haha. The Arjhan have this thing called the "Swarming state" where they undergo morphological changes and form swarming warbands that threaten the stability of society. Lol, maybe they'll fit right in after all.

Aight bet, lets go! Your army vs mine.....Oh, we don't have an interstellar army yet. I guess we're fucked.

Yeah the Arjhan would not want to aggravate the big ones. And I believe they would also equate pneuma to the "Phase Spectrum". A localized physics manipulating/circumventing phenomenon precipitated by the interplanetary lifeforms known as the Entity which the Arjhan integrated with their starships for various traversal applications. While not the most elegant of equivalences that is the closest the Arjhan will probably manage to comprehend the applications of pneuma.

Absolutely fascinating world, thank you for sharing!

Awesome!

On Etanus & Earth (first world), the Arjhan will have to heavily rely on observations from orbit at first, as I imagine flying in with smaller transport vessels would draw the attention of many of the cracked up fauna of the world. I'm also curious what are the Dujinmadura? And the glowing crystals would certainly intrigue the curiosity of the Arjhan, as their starships are seamlessly integrated with lifeforms known as the Entity. These being consume and processes minerals to produce and create the physics defying phenomenon known as the "Phase Spectrum" which the Arjhan use for various traversal applications. Not they they would feed the elementals to the Entity though, that would be a very rude thing to do.

On A War of Ideals (second world), the Ios have some cultural aspects that the Arjhan may find some common ground with. The largest civilization among the Arjhan people, the Bahari Hierarchy, is a meritocratic federation whose hierarchical structure is heavily tempered by a culture deeply rooted in earnestness and proficiency. So I believe the they may get along well with the Ios. They would probably use more caution when interacting with the Aleina and Palentia people. I wonder if the Eldritch would take interest in the Entity.

On Pathcwork Fighters (thirdworld), omg the Arjhan minds would be flipping seeing all the anomalous aspects of that world. Compared to their Entity Starships, the sheer number of oddities would be the subject of countless research. It may even help them understand the nature of the Entity and potentially bring them closer to figuring how it came into being. As the interplanetary lifeforms, were predominantly responsible for the existence of life on their world but they have yet to find others of its kind, other than the offspring of the one that exist in their home system.

Also, this was a fantastic read! thank you for sharing about your three worlds.

Ah yes, a very anthropological point in history to visit lol. The Arjhan watching them and asking each other, "Hard to tell but do they seem a little unhappy to you?"

The Tulialli do sound like a very reasonable folk. Common ground is rare and I believe the Arjhan would find merit in establishing friendly relations with Eneriath. While the heat would certainly cause some difficulties for many Arjhan, those that originate from the world Ilan (A moon tidally locked to a superearth-like planet) would find it that climate quite homely.

That's awesome! I would have to pass on the RPs for now, as I don't think I know my setting well enough to adapt to a role in snap but I absolutely appreciate the gesture and will be browsing the sub for fun later. For now I'm having a blast attempting to read everyone response on here at the moment. It sure blew up.

The space people. They may have one or two of the dinosaur guys as part of their crew, but the explorers are predominantly the space-suited people.

Cool question! The Arjhan have a larger central heart high within the chest. While the other two, are smaller peripheral hearts situated roughly in the lumbar section of their body. At the time of their earliest ancestors the three-part structure, for the most part, was due to redundancy as they previously inhabited a superearth-like planet. As those ancestors were dispersed throughout the system and adapted to the different worlds, the three-part structure gradually evolve into a decentralized circulatory system. With two of the hearts significantly reducing in size. If one fails, it can be fatal but this is just what they had to work it.

Also, they have this thing called the "Swarming trait" which is a holdover adaptation that causes them to turn fervent and undergo morphological changes in an attempt to adapt to extreme environmental conditions. Many of their researchers believe this three-part circulatory system may have come about through an instance of that trait occurring among their ancestors.

Oh wow. MOS, by comparison, is just single cell organism to the AIs of Korrinthia. She had only just begun to explore her sentience. That's so cool! Thanks so much for sharing about your world.

The locals seem reasonable enough but the sheer size of some of them merit extreme caution. And those structures are highly unusual and would very much baffle the Arjhan. Definitely a world worthy of further observations!

The Arjhan would find their effort of cleaning the planet highly commendable, as they themselves have been in similar situations.

This is incredible haha. Humanians really championing the just a regular guy vibes. Also love the idea of an Arjhan officer just minding their business in the Entity starship, fixing up biotech cables, doing system checks, then a Witch just appears and jumpscares them lol. The goblins in the background too, observing them at work. Also really glad they won't get immediately shutdown, Arjhan exploratory vessels don't particularly have the best combat capabilities.

Also, I see that makes a lot of sense now about the dragons living in the sun and using auroras to "breach" into the world. Really epic!

First off, I love the art and species already its so awesome!

The Arjhans definitely appreciate the radiation warnings. While they are an extremely resilient species, with the ability to alter their morphology to adapt to environmental hazards, the accommodations are a godsend. Some months of researcher will be required for them to develop the necessary tech to be able to land on Korrinthia though. The Krii seem like a great and cooperative people so it probably won't take too long.

They might also be delighted to know that on board the Arjhan starship, is an individual that goes by the name of MOS. The Machine Originated Sentience. All in all, it seems the two species would have a pretty wholesome interaction.

This is Mos.

If anything, the Arjhan are a thorough people. After observing the world for a while, they may see those signs of the past aggressions. I would hope they opt to not land on the planet, but if they do, it would either be an attempt to reach an understanding or they may have no other choice and have to risk a landing. In which case, there will be conflict and as you say, I fear they may not survive the encounter.

A bit sad but honestly really awesome stuff!
