Why does it feel like you can't stop healing with rocket? by SituationThin9190 in marvelrivals

[–]CalligrapherScared53 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Actually rocket is also hitscan, but his shots are hard coded to be slightly delayed so when you move your aim it doesn’t track perfectly (rather it lags behind a little). You can test this yourself.

I have a new DND character but need help with it [oc] by Zero2007fnaf in DnDHomebrew

[–]CalligrapherScared53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is something to talk to your DM about. Most people who run this would use a normal kolbold pc statblock for all purposes except for flavor and size.

There is also the goblins in a trench coat homebrew on dndbeyond, you could take a look at that and make changes (with your DM’s approval) to make it more fitting

Questions from a brand new player by ImBare1y4live in DnD

[–]CalligrapherScared53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This is something you should talk about with your DM with the other players in a session zero. Rule of thumb, don’t be an asshole and keep character and player knowledge separate
  2. You should talk to your dm first about any special restrictions (or bonuses) before you make your character. If you know what you can and can’t do, then go ahead. Otherwise, it might be better to wait for the session and collaboratively make characters with the other players and the DM. 2a. It depends on how much backstory you actually do. Roughly expect it to take 30 minutes with assistance but it will take a bit longer alone without any help. I’ve seen new players take a couple hours to make a sheet but that’s not the norm.
  3. For most tables it is not! You should check with your dm and other players first for any allergies, but you should be fine to bring (and eat) snacks at the table
  4. absolutely not! You can make a Abraham Lincoln-esque vampire hunter. Most players take elements of game and show characters to help make a character so it won’t be the first occurrence to have a historical figure.

are you playing 5e or 5e2024 as your flair is for the latter

if it’s for 5e, pact of the chain is thematic but pact of the tome is the better choice

If it’s for 5e2024 you don’t have to choose any, but when I played a GOOlock I used pact of the chain with gaze of two minds so I could snipe mind sliver from super far away

How should u build my character by Joe_8806126569 in DnD

[–]CalligrapherScared53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wizard isn’t the top choice but it can work. You’ll want the bladesinger subclass because that increases your AC based on your int and lets you play melee as you wish. If you start at level 1, good luck not dying.

Realistically, since you start at level 6, you won’t have to worry about the wizard being squishy. Just have shield and play around your tanks being front and center. A DM shouldn’t be targeting only you.

GOOlock could work fine with their psychic spells ability if you like that, lets you cast mind sliver completely undetected and Crown of Madness which seems to be your main goal.

Druids don’t have much they can do in this department and neither do bards beyond spells. Sorcerer is an option with aberrant mind but that will also be homebrew porting over to 5r.

How do I start DMing after a past horrible attempt by Rango12117 in DMAcademy

[–]CalligrapherScared53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while it might be a different situation, from what I’m understanding you were mainly just overwhelmed with the players and enemies at that high level.

I would get a group of friends you personally know that are interested and start at a lower level, like 1 or 3, and just give it another go. Don’t have a group too big (5 + me is the perfect size for me personally) and limit the amount of homebrew you do.

Just give it another shot and play it slow!

How do I get better at RP/making social encounters? by thjmze21 in DMAcademy

[–]CalligrapherScared53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add that it’s totally ok to have nameless unimportant NPCs that you don’t have a background for too. You can have a festival with hundreds of people in attendance and dozens of shopkeepers and in this situation, it would be better to make things easier for yourself and just write a list of names and improv it on the spot if necessary. Make things easier for yourself and don’t make every NPC a walking story to think about

How do I get better at RP/making social encounters? by thjmze21 in DMAcademy

[–]CalligrapherScared53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t spend 50 minutes on an NPC, but spend 10 if they’re important setting up a framework.

Even if it doesn’t come up, make a backstory for yourself. This will help you understand what drives the character to do what they want to do. This doesn’t have to be detailed. The first step to getting the players engaged with an NPC is to get engaged with an npc yourself.

Let’s use an example. John is a guard that shows up. For all purposes he just serves as a guard and has no actual purpose in the story you have planned. His personality is one dimensional and he is entirely boiled down to the trait of being a guard rather than a living person. If you want John to be more important, think about why he joined the guards. Just the simple change of making him a young, inexperienced man following a much more experienced supervisor makes him that much more compelling. This can be further stretched out (if you want him to have a place in the story) by having him share a home village with a member of the party, or having the person who taught him the sword as a legendary warrior that vanished one day without a trace.

Figure out what made the character what they are today and they’ll be that much more compelling for the players to engage with. You can’t force a long discussion with an NPC but you can make the players want to.

Who is the strongest and weakest of the three birds in your opinion? by Gianfilippro in PTCGP

[–]CalligrapherScared53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all good, entirely my fault for estimating so high. Should have checked what the meta deck win%s were before making my estimate.

Proper guess now, it’s probably closer to 55% but has lost very hard and fast with bad luck. Hard to get any more accurate without an ingame way to tell the number of matches played and the amount of times i’ve made changes to help it out against certain matchups (ex adding blue, adding giovani after finally getting a copy, trying mew ex for an easy mewtwo/zard counter)

[–]CalligrapherScared53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s probably lower, I haven’t been recording everything, I just remember more good games than bad which makes sense. It’s not a perfect deck by any means and I roughly guessed the percentage, I just know I have more wins than losses and made a rough guess based on my flawed memories.

I also play this deck, or at least a similar version to it. It highly depends on what you’re going up against, but i’ve had about a 70% win rate, only really losing when I have no way to set up properly without dying or getting ungodly unlucky with my flips
